He brushed his lips across hers and bit down slightly on her bottom lip. Just enough to graze the plump flesh and to reward him with a few drops of her sweet blood. Evie moaned into his mouth and tried to pull his head down more, to prolong the contact, but he was in charge now. That small taste had been enough to confirm what he knew must be true. She would never have found him otherwise, and her blood fizzed around his body, singing the truth. One that was reflected in his soul and lit up the dark places and made him feel whole again.

He ran his fangs down her neck, loving the way the skin pebbled in gooseflesh, and his girl shivered in his arms.

“You’ll have to turn me?” she asked, her voice a throaty whispery moan, which made him hard as nails.

He forced himself to pull away, to study her, but he didn’t read any fear in her gaze, only quiet determination and love. So much love, they could live several lifetimes and he still wouldn’t deserve it, but he’d do his utmost to make sure he would do so in time.

“Never, not unless you want me to. I love you too much to do that without you being absolutely sure it’s what you want.”

Evie exhaled sharply, and her eyes filled with more precious tears.

  “You love me?” she asked.

“It’s why I had to let you go. It was the hardest fucking thing I ever had to do, but I had to be sure this is what you really wanted. I daren’t hope that it was, but I knew, deep down, that if you did, you would find your way back to me.”

A brief flash of anger showed in Evie’s expressive eyes, confirmed by the almighty slap she delivered to the back of his head before she smiled.

“You, Sir, are a fucking fool. I love you, and I don’t care two hoots about you being a vampire, and yes, one day maybe I’ll be ready to become one, too, but for now, can you just please make me yours?”

“As you ask me so nicely, girl.”

He sank his fangs into her fragrant skin, and his girl screamed in pleasure as he carried her back to the house.

  Their home. Their future. Forever.

  Epilogue

  Eight months later

“I really don’t think this is a good idea.”

Joseph’s expressive, bushy eyebrows drew together in a frown, a sure sign of his inherent disapproval, even as he handed Atlan his dinner jacket.

“Just as well this isn’t up to you then, isn’t it?”

A huff was his answer this time, and Atlan bit back a smile. Poor Joseph’s ordered world had been turned upside down since Evie had reappeared on their doorstep. Atlan, however, had never been happier, and as far as he was concerned, Evie could make all the changes she wanted, as long as she kept his true secret and he knew—without a shadow of doubt—that she always would. She was his and after tonight, no one would have any reason to doubt that.

Coming forward as the elusive Atlan St. James’s grandson had been Evie’s inspired idea. It meant that all of them had been dragged kicking and screaming, if not into the limelight, but out of hiding. Opening up the house had been the last in a long line of changes, which would ultimately set them free.

Tonight, was the grand opening, and the place was ablaze with light. The string orchestra was in the process of setting up. Tortured notes of instruments being plucked, carried upstairs, so reminiscent of this place centuries past that Atlan had to swallow past the sudden lump of emotion.

Never in his wildest dreams would he have thought to see this place receiving guests, the very air around them expectant and full of life.

His sweet angel had breathed new life into this old place, healed the cracks, and infused it with her vibrant energy.

“It seems a shame, you know, Sir.” Atlan smiled as he recalled the moment Evie had first brought up her plans. Tucked into his side, after an intense earlier scene, which had ended up with the best sex yet, her pale skin still carrying the thin stripes left behind by his cane, she’d stretched like a cat.

“What is, my love?” he’d asked while tracing those marks with his fingers. Evie had shuddered under his touch, so he’d applied a little more pressure. Her breathing had sped up, and he’d indulged himself in retracing the path his hands had woven with his lips.

  “Please, Sir…”

Atlan had lifted his head, and willfully misinterpreting her statement, had smirked down on her,

“You, my dear, are insatiable, but far be it for me to not satisfy my lady, especially when she’s been such a good girl.”

He’d kissed his way down her soft belly, loving the way her flesh wobbled under her protesting giggles.

“No, Sir, please, that’s not what I…oh god.”

Atlan had grinned around his mouthful of clit, as he sucked that little bundle of nerves into his mouth, until his sweet Evie was grinding her cunt against him. The sounds spilling from her mouth had told him how close she was, as did the sweet nectar of her arousal which filled his mouth. Having taken her right to the edge, he’d released her and laughed at her frustrated groan. Hands curled into the sheets, she’d looked ready to murder him, but like the good subbie she was, she hadn’t acted on that instinct.

Instead she’d lain there panting for breath and had bitten her lips hard enough to draw blood when he’d raised an eyebrow at her.

“So, you were saying, my sweet?”

Atlan had crawled back up her body, making sure to pay homage to every one of her delectable curves on the way, licked the crimson spot of fluid off her succulent lips, and then propped himself up on one elbow to study her.

“Come on out with it, what would be a shame?”

Evie had mock glared at him, and then it had been his turn to groan, because the little minx had turned the tables on him. Straddling his legs, she’d leaned down just enough so that her amazing rack had been tantalizingly close, yet not near enough for him to sink his fangs in. Evie had wrapped one hand around his hard dick and teased the shaft with slow, measured pumps while she’d fondled his balls.

It had taken every ounce of self-control he’d had to not take charge, to demand that she stopped teasing and suck him off, but he loved this side of her too much to stop her.

It was too fucking good to see her confidence in her body emerging more and more. So, hands clasped behind his head, instead, he’d forced a laugh—a somewhat strangled sounding impression of one—to be fair, and he’d shaken his head.

“Unless you’re willing to make good on that promise you best stop now and tell me what’s on your mind.”

Mid suck of his dick as though it was the sweetest lollipop, Evie had taken her plump lips off her prize and grinned up at him.

“Well, this place is full of history, and it’s such a shame that no one gets to see it. With the art scholarship you’ve set up in your grandfather’s name, it only makes sense to expand on that, don’t you think? If we opened the house to the public, it would bring in extra revenue and folks would flock to see where the great artist Atlan St. James lived.”

She’d sat up more, her whole face alight with pleasure as she warmed to her subject matter.

“Trust me, as a fan of your work, I’d have bitten my right arm off for a chance to see where the old master lived and worked.”

“Who are you calling old, girl?”

He’d flipped her over until he was back on top, and taking full advantage of the situation, had flexed his hips, and seated himself balls deep inside her sweet pussy in one long, measured thrust.

They’d groaned in unison, as her internal muscles had clenched around his shaft.

“If the shoe fits, Sir.” Evie had giggled anew at his, “harrumph,” in protest.

“Hah, would an old man be able to do this?”

Atlan had pulled all the way out until just his thick head remained poised at her slick entrance, and grasping her ass cheeks, had levered himself onto his knees, before surging back into the tight clasp of her body. At this angle, he was in the perfect position to hit her sweet spot and sure enough his girl’s eyes had crossed, while her cunt grasp
ed his dick in a strangle hold, when he surged back in.

“Not fair, I…oh god, don’t stop, please.”

Evie’s panted reply had spurred him on and talk had become impossible as he’d fucked his precious girl rough, hard, and fast. Release for both of them had been breathtaking, and it had been some time later before they’d managed to continue that conversation.

The door opened, shaking him out of his musings. Evie, stunning in her simple, understated black evening gown, which showed her curves off in all their breathtaking glory smiled at him.

“Sir, a girl has to wonder what you were thinking about to have caused that smirk,” she said. “Are you ready? The first guests are due any minute now.”

Joseph made a rough sound at the back of his throat, but his lined face broke into a reluctant smile when Evie stepped closer and adjusted his tie for him. The faint blush which appeared on his old retainer’s cheeks almost made Atlan laugh out loud.

“There, you were a bit wonky and that would never do, would it, Joseph. Cheer up, Aggie is in her element, having concocted the most delightful canapes, you know.”

As had no doubt been Evie’s intention the mention of his wife softened Joseph’s disgruntled edges further.

“With all due respect, mistress, Aggie will do whatever you ask of her and more. My wife doesn’t know when to separate her emotions from her work.”

Evie rolled her eyes at Atlan over Joseph’s shoulder, and then promptly stunned the man by giving him a hug.

“Sure, Joseph, you carry on believing that if it makes you feel any better.” She pulled back and dropped a kiss on his butler’s weathered cheeks, which meant they reddened even more.

“Thank you for indulging me these last few weeks. I know you don’t approve, but this will all work out, you’ll see, and it will mean you and Aggie can enjoy your retirement without worrying over Atlan.”

Joseph frowned, and bowed his head.

“It’s not my place to approve, but it will be good to see Aggie take it easier. I best go and meet those guests.”

With that he walked out, closing the heavy door behind him.

“You’re too good to all of us, sweetheart,” Atlan said. When he held out his arms, Evie wasted no time in scurrying into his embrace.

“I’m not sure Joseph would agree. He doesn’t do change easily does he, Sir?”

Atlan laughed and cupped her chin to make her look at him.

“None of us do, but thanks to you, the future is now ours. Talking of which, there’s something I wanted to ask you, before we get lost in the madness that is about to descend upon our house.”

Evie’s expectant smile made his chest tighten with all the love he felt for her, and all his usual finesse went out of the window, when he pulled out the box, which had been burning a hole in his trouser pocket.

His precious angel’s mouth dropped open, when he went down on one knee in front of her.

  “Atlan, Sir? What are you—”

His index finger on her mouth stopped her breathless question and her eyes grew wide when he snapped the box open with his free hand.

“I never thought I would ever want to do this again, but…” He paused, stunned by how right this moment felt. Evie must have felt it, too, because her expressive eyes filled with tears, and she sank to her knees right in front of him, so that they were eye level with each other.

“I don’t need this, Sir. You are all I need, you know this.” She touched the delicate day collar he’d placed around her neck a month into their relationship and smiled. “This is all the commitment I need. I—”

Atlan shup up her predictable protests by kissing her, and by the time he let her come up for air they were both breathing heavily. The house had also come alive with the arrival of their guests. He could hear them breathe, their heartbeats a loud staccato in his veins. Thanks to his girl, however, he was well fed, and the influx of his food source did not tempt him in the slightest, and never would again.

“I know you do, my sweet, but I want the whole world to know you’re mine.” He kissed her renewed tears off her face and brushed a light kiss over her lips.

“Will you…be mine?” he asked. “Please do me the honor of becoming my wife, Miss Prewitt.”

“Yes, a thousand times yes.” Her voice shook with unshed tears, as the words tumbled out of her.

Atlan slipped the antique engagement ring, one he’d unearthed from the family vault only last week, onto her finger. He knew his voice was hoarse with the force of his emotions battering his soul.

“This was my grandmother’s, and it hasn’t been worn by anyone since her passing. She made me promise on her deathbed, to give it to someone worthier than my wife had been. She’d never approved of her.”

Atlan paused and swallowed hard past the lump of grief. Time had lessened the hurt, but it had never truly gone away until this moment, and seeing the wordless acceptance and understanding in Evie’s expressive eyes.

“She would have loved you, my precious girl.”

The discreet knock on the door interrupted them, and getting up Atlan pulled Evie up to standing with him.

“That’s our cue, my sweet. Are you ready to make this dream of yours a reality?” he asked.

  Evie smiled and nodded.

  “Of course, Sir.”
