Pulling me into an embrace, I sank into her arms and felt her love and warmth. It felt so good I almost cried.
“He’s a good partner for you,” she said, giving me a squeeze. “I love you, Elena.”
“I love you too, Mom.”
I looked up at her face and reached up to touch her cheek, but before my hand could reach her, she dissolved into nothingness.
A hard thump jolted me awake and I was instantly thrown out of my dream. Looking out the window, I saw the plane gliding along the runway at Dulles International.
“That was a bumpy landing,” said Logan. I yawned and rubbed my eyes.
“Was I asleep the whole time?”
“You were out cold. You were mumbling in your sleep, too, like you were talking to someone.”
“Yeah, I had the nicest dream,” I said with a wistful grin as the plane came to a halt.
“Was it about cupcakes and Fanta?” he asked, grinning wide, then pointed to his light blue shirt. There was a dark blue wet spot on the shoulder. “You drooled on me again.”
I felt my cheeks start to burn, but it went away as he stood up and put on his jacket. It covered the spot just fine.
“Don’t worry. Your secret’s safe with me. I got your back, Elena.”
“I suppose the least I could do is buy you a beer,” I said with a nonchalant toss of my hair.
“I think we both deserve one,” he said with a wink. “Maybe something stronger.”
Standing up and grabbing my things, I exited the plane and stepped into the terminal. The late afternoon sun was shining brightly on the asphalt runway and I was eager to spend the rest of the day relaxing in a bar somewhere with nothing to worry about but what song to pick next on the jukebox.
Unfortunately, fate had other plans. Before we could even sit down at the nearest terminal bar, my phone rang.
“It’s Harris,” I grumbled groggily as I looked at my screen. “Guess he wants to know if we’ve landed.”
Answering with a yawn, I waited to hear a big congratulations from him. What I got instead was a rapid-fire of words that instantly woke me up more than Mountain Dew ever could.
“Agent Rivera, I need you and Hawthorne back in the office immediately. You’re both needed on a case. There’ve been reports of bodies piling up in Boca Raton, and they’re all missing their blood. Sounds like another goddamn vampire. I’ll brief you both when you get here.”
He hung up abruptly, leaving me to stare at my phone.
“What was that about?” asked Logan, puzzled.
“We’ve got a new case,” I told him. “A vampire in Florida. Looks like we’re gonna have to take a raincheck on that beer.”
