“They’re lucky you didn’t.”
“I didn’t want to piss off the werewolves. And Duncan is a nice guy. Apart from this aberration, he has never done anything to make me feel he could be a danger to someone. I bet he wouldn’t do something this crazy anytime soon.”
“You’ve got a heart of gold.”
She waved a hand. “Hey, I’m no saint.”
Of course, she wasn’t. He was reminded of the way she’d clung to him when they made love. She was a siren, a seductress, and the winner of his heart. Now all he had to do was muster the courage to tell her he was in love with her. All he could hope was she shared some of his feelings, because if she didn’t, he didn’t really know what he would do next.
His life and happiness was in her hands—and he had no idea what she intended to do about it.
Chapter Twenty One
It all felt like the best night of her life. There were no words to describe the joy and happiness that coursed through her veins. It had been a long time since she allowed herself to experience something without holding her emotions back.
The way he made her feel like no one else ever did. She was willing to do anything to keep him with her.
“Would you like a cup of coffee?” she asked as their dinner came to an end. He helped her carry the dishes to the kitchen. As he set them in the dishwasher, she marveled at how at home he was. This man was rich. He could afford to enjoy every bit of luxury there was to offer in the world, but still he was down to earth and simple.
If she wasn’t already in love with him, she would have fallen, even as he set the dishes with care.
“How about we finish the bottle of wine? It’s a beautiful evening. We could sit outside on the patio.” He turned to face her. “That is, if you’re in the mood to.”
Was she?
Of course, she was. “Sure. Why not?”
For a moment it occurred to her that by sitting outside they might present a good target to the shooter who tried to kill them, but then she was reminded of the fact that Reece would be able to sense the intruder long before he harmed them. It was kind of reassuring to be with him. If he hadn’t acted so fast, moved so decisively on that fateful day, she would have gotten injured for sure. Or perhaps died too.
“I don’t think I thanked you for saving my life.” She picked up two wine glasses as he brought the wine from the dining area. “If you hadn’t—”
“Let’s not talk about that stuff.”
She understood his point, and she agreed with it. “You’re right. I think we’ve earned the right to enjoy one evening without worrying about people who’re hell bent on killing us.”
He laughed as she opened the door. They strode outside. “I don’t mean to be flippant, but it’s getting a bit old. People kidnap you. Someone shoots at us. A werewolf attacks you.”
“And you’re forced to save me time and time again.” She took a seat. He poured the wine and gave her a glass. Nya leaned back. The fresh air caressed her cheeks, lifted her hair, and dropped them gently back on her shoulders. He took a seat beside her, and his close proximity made her take a quick sip of the wine. Already, her blood hummed in anticipation of what was to come.
Something was going to happen tonight.
And this time, she hoped it would have a happy ending.
“Hopefully, we’re not going to have any more problems. The police are on the case. The shooter will be caught. They’ve collected the shells from the shotgun he used and have sent them for analysis,” he said. “I’ve been told that they may be slow, but they aren’t dumb, and I am eager to cling on to that theory and hope it’s true.”
“I know you don’t have a lot of reasons to trust the police, but they’ve never let the town down, and I don’t think they’re going to do that now,” she assured him. “But enough of that. Tell me something new. What have you been up to?”
“You mean, besides being involved in a police investigation?”
His grin made her heart flip. “And from saving me? How is work?”
He shrugged as he took a sip of his wine. “Work is good. It’s chugging along at an even pace. We’ve pretty much finalized the location for the new factory, and hopefully work will start once we have all the necessary permits.”
“You work fast.”
“I do what I can. My father always used to say I shouldn’t let the grass grow under my feet, and I try to remember his advice whenever I can.”
She stared into his eyes. There was a sadness there which she never saw before. It reminded her of how alone he was. He didn’t really have anyone to rely on. She didn’t have her father, but her mother was always available. It must have been hard for him to come to a new town and begin life on a clean slate. Of course, he didn’t get the welcome he wanted and deserved. “You miss him? Your father?”
He sighed, took a sip of the wine, and then looked away.
She marveled at his sharp jaw and cheeks. While she wanted to reach out and touch him, Nya controlled herself. She wasn’t as sure where she stood. After rebuffing him so many times, it was a little difficult for her to show him she’d changed her mind.
“He was the guiding light in my life. Of course, he was a werewolf and I inherited my nature from him, but I was also his only child, and he spent whatever time he could with me. My mother died when I was seven in a car accident, and she—well, I’ve only few memories of her.”
It must have been lonely for him to grow up as an only child without a mother, but he’d done well. The credit probably went to his father, but also to him. “Your father wanted you to expand the business?”
Reece ran a finger over the edge of his glass. “He didn’t have any plans for it or for me. In fact, he would often tell me that if I wanted to sell the shop and roam the world, I was free to do so. He just wanted me to be happy with whatever choices I made. My father was from a small town, but I grew up in a city. When I was a kid, he would tell me stories about his old neighbors, and the people he knew, and the pack he was with. In the city, there are no packs. Each werewolf who decides to live there is alone, and it’s not a life that suits everyone.”
There was a deep, burning desire within her to understand the system he belonged to. His pack was his family, and she had to respect that fact. “Your father didn’t like life without his pack?”
He shook his head. “He didn’t.” Turning to face her, he lifted a hand and captured a strand of her hair.
When he tucked it back behind her ear, the slight touch made her shiver. Her nerves jingled as she stared into his eyes. The man all but took her breath away. She’d wasted enough time fighting him. Now, she wanted to make up for that lost time.
“But he was determined to make a good life for me and for that, he needed to move to this town.”
“It was a big sacrifice.”
“Yeah, it was.”
They looked at each other.
It was one of those perfect moments when they understood one another almost a little too perfectly. Nya shed all inhibitions. He’d been the perfect gentleman up until now, she realized the reason for it. He made a move once, and she deemed it to be a mistake. She’d all but told him she wasn’t sure about the status of their relationship. If anyone of them was going to make a move, it had to be her.
She had to be a hundred percent sure about this. There was no going back once she made her decision.
Nya raised a hand and put a finger on his lips.
He went as still as a rock.
Her finger traced the line of his lips. His skin was supple, yet firm. When she leaned forward, he still didn’t shift but when her lips touched his, his arm banded around her and then pulled her close. She still held the wine glass in her hand, even though she’d nearly forgotten about it. Their tongues twisted and danced while they both ravished each other.
The kiss was sublime. It held a promise. When he lifted his head, she took a deep breath. Before her courage failed her, she took a big gulp of the wine and finished it.
Setting it down on the table, she turned to face him. “Before I lose my nerve, I have to say something,” she said.
Reece nodded slowly.
Surely, he expected her to say something to ruin the moment. She’d done that up until now. He was always the one who put his feelings out there and she shut him down, but it was her turn to lay bare her soul. “I think—I’ve come to the conclusion that…” Nya grabbed a deep breath and then expelled it with a gush of air. “I think I’m in love with you, Reece.”
He raised an eyebrow, but his expression didn’t betray his feelings. “You think?”
“Okay. Fine. I love you.” She huffed. Of course, he wouldn’t make it easy for her. He did have a perverse sense of justice. She was sure he would drag out this moment for as long as he could to make up for all those long, torturous nights she put him through. “I love you, and I’m not scared to say it anymore.”
“Why were you scared?”
She pulled at a lock of her hair as she tried to marshal her thoughts. It was difficult to think when he sat so close. Her breasts nearly pushed against his chest, and she was acutely aware that one of her legs rested on his hard, muscled thigh. “I’ve just never felt this way before. We’re moving too fast, and somehow I feel—I guess I’m a little worried. We’ve barely dated. We hardly know each other. Maybe—?”
He put a finger on her lips to still her tongue. “Maybe nothing. I love you, and you love me. That’s it.” He stared into her eyes, and there was a haunting quality to his voice.
If she didn’t know any better, she would have thought he was trying to hypnotize her. But she knew him well. He wouldn’t do something so coercive even if he could. There wasn’t a malicious bone in his body. The man was all heart and soul, and he was all hers.
“We belong together. Yes?”
She nodded, and he removed his hand. He set aside his glass of wine that was almost full. Gently, he drew her into his arms until she was almost sitting on his lap.
“Yes,” she whispered.
He cocked his head. “You’re not saying this because you’re drunk, right?”
“Of course, I’m not.” She glanced at her empty glass and then considered her state of inebriation. Sure, she was a little buzzed, but that was more because he was with her, and for the first time since she met him, she actually felt liberated. There was no fear holding her back, no reservations, and no doubts. It was just him and her—and to hell with the rest of the world that conspired to keep them apart. She raised a finger and shook it. “I’m not saying it because I’m drunk. I do love you. I do.”
A slow grin spread over his face, and then he kissed her once more.
The passion that she’d always felt but tried so hard to curb ballooned and exploded within her gut. Her arms went around his neck as she pressed closer to him. The sheer exhilaration that overcame her was enough to make her swoon. Closing her eyes, she gave it her all in the kiss. It wasn’t just enough to taste him. She wanted to possess him. Her fingers tore at his shirt. Perhaps a button or two broke. She wasn’t sure but soon she could run her fingers over his naked skin. His muscles rippled and gleamed in the moonlight that bathed them in a silvery light. His lips were hot on hers, and her breath mingled with his.
She ran her hands over his cheeks, over the smooth column of his throat, and then down to his chest. Need and heat ran through her veins and made every breath an effort. His hands skimmed over her thighs and made her shudder. He lifted her dress and in one swift movement, he pulled it over her head. She sat atop him, clad only in her panties and bra.
He took a moment to study her voluptuous curves as if he wanted to etch them in his memory. “You’re beautiful.”
“And so are you.” She bent her head and captured his lips in a kiss.
His hands rubbed over her back and he undid the clasp off her bra. The silky garment slipped off, and it was thrown to one side. His hands clapped over her firm, heavy mounds. When he squeezed, the fountain of desire turned into a volcano. His fingers pressed over her nipples. Moisture leaked into her panties. She could scent her own arousal, and it was a pretty done deal he could sense it too. Nya didn’t care. She wanted him to know how much she desired him. As she leaned back, his lips caught her nipple. He savored the bud as he sucked on it. She ran a hand through his hair as she held on for dear life. Nya rocked back and forth, unable to contain the squeals of pleasure that came out of her mouth.
If there was a heaven on earth then surely…this was it.
She was finally in the right place at the right time. Her heart and mind were in sync. This time, she knew exactly what she was doing and why she was doing it. There were no more conflicts and there would be no regrets later on.
She wanted more, and she wanted it now.
Her hands played with his belt. He helped her and soon he was completely naked. It was a good thing she didn’t have any neighbors. They would have caught quite a show if they were around, but she was confident in the knowledge that if there was an intruder, Reece would be able to scent the person before he got too near.
Dating a werewolf was actually kind of fun.
It was just him and her, and this wonderful moment which they shared together. His hands roamed over her curves. With his lips, he tasted her, and she returned the favor. They were two bodies but one soul, and they were completely lost in each other. Every movement, every gesture, and every touch were exquisite. When he took off her panties, she was wet with delirious need. Nya grabbed his shoulders. She took position, and then in one swift movement, she slid his hard erection deep inside her. It fit snugly into her sheath. He moaned in rapture. She bent forward to kiss his throat. His scent filled her nostrils, and she inhaled deeply. His hands were hard on her body as he pressed and kneaded, but she found a lot of pleasure as he savored her curves.
Pulling back a little, she allowed him to slip out, and then once again, she took him deep within her muscles. Her sheath expanded to accommodate him. Together, they rocked back and forth on the couch. Her breasts pushed against his chest. His hands were still on her waist. The rhythm was hard and fast. It was just right. There was no stopping the storm that swirled within her depths. She rode him, and he allowed her to take control. Nya closed her eyes as she gave in to the sweet temptation of her surrender.
This was exhilarating.
It was perfect.
In unison, they moved. The fast pace made them breathe fast, but both of them were too far gone to notice. Bright colors flashed in front of her eyes as she pounded on his lap. All thoughts slipped from her mind, and there was only the need that commanded her actions. In and out, he moved at a breakneck speed. His hands held her hips in a death grip, but still he allowed her to keep the control firmly in her hands. She was far beyond the edge of sanity. Nothing mattered except the desire that gripped her. She wanted to sate it, and then perhaps she would be able to think about something else. Finally, her muscles shuddered as the climax ripped through her body. She let out a loud scream. A moment later, he exploded within her moist depths. Nya collapsed on top of him. She didn’t have the energy to move a muscle. Sweet ripples of exquisite pleasure skipped through her nerves.
This was the headiest experience of her life. She’d made love before, but never with such intensity.
For a few long minutes, they both remained still.
She could feel his beating heart against her chest. Her skin rubbed against his, and the touch of his hands was reassuring. It calmed her down. Nya sighed as she finally stood up. She picked up her dress and slipped into it, while Reece put on his trousers. “I just…” She didn’t have words, and it appeared he didn’t also. For a change, she didn’t want to talk. Actually, all she wanted was to cuddle with him and go right to sleep. They still had a lot of ground to cover, but they would have a lifetime to discuss all that. For now, it was enough they were together, and there were no more obstacles in their path.
“Why don’t you stay the night?” she suggested. Her heart thundered. Pe
rhaps he might want to go home. Maybe he wasn’t thinking along the same lines. What if he didn’t want what she wanted?
The fear lasted only for a moment. He grinned. “I would love that.”
With a laugh, she wrapped her arm around his waist. They gathered the rest of their things and strode back inside. From now on, a new chapter in their love story was about to unfold and she couldn’t wait to begin it.
Chapter Twenty Two
It was a beautiful morning. As he lifted the cup of hot coffee to his lips, Reece admired the view out of the window. The lush forest that spread out below was glorious. Beams of sunlight danced on the tops of the trees. While he only slept a few hours at night, he felt refreshed, energized. Love was a lovely emotion. It kept him tethered to the ground but still allowed him to float in the clouds. A blackbird alighted on the windowsill. It tapped against the glass and then flew away. The sunlight shimmered and brightened as the day progressed.
He heard her before he saw her.
“Hey,” she said.
A slow grin spread over his lips. He turned to take a look at her.
Dressed in an oversized T-shirt, she looked absolutely breathtaking. Her hair was tied but a few tendrils escaped to touch her face.
His fingers longed to touch her dewy, soft skin. “Good morning.”
As she moved automatically towards the coffee machine, he drew her in his arms. She lifted her head and their lips touched in a warm kiss. His tongue darted in to sample her delights, and she tasted as sweet as he remembered. Last night felt like a dream, but he knew it was real.
She stepped away, and he smiled. Her eyes sparkled like jewels as she stared into his face. “It was the best night of my life,” she said.
Reece grinned. “You stole my line.” He turned to pour a cup of coffee for her. “I wasn’t sure what you would want to eat, but I made some bacon and eggs.”
“Wow! Good sex and breakfast. Will you move in with me?”
He handed her the cup. They both moved to the table where everything was ready. “Be careful for what you wish for. You might just get it.”
