So this is what had put him in such a bad temper.

“I confess it started as a girlish fascination with a handsome soldier. When I first arrived at Stanbury’s estate I had the most selfish notion, that I would marry him just to catch a glimpse of you once in awhile.” She watched him through a gloss of tears. “And then I got to know you better.”

  He flinched.

She was making a hash of it. She stepped closer and put her hands on his chest and peered up into his eyes. “I found you intimidating and unyielding…and strong and determined and completely heroic. Even more fascinating than before.” She pulled in a ragged breath. “And that feeling grew and took over my whole heart. It’s no longer just mere infatuation. It’s love.”

“Then why did you torment me yesterday?”

“That was my pitiful attempt at self-sacrifice. I’d become convinced you would be better off without me.”

“I would be in hell without you.”

He gripped her waist and lifted her eye level, his gaze searching her face. Instinctively, she wrapped herself around him.

  “Say it again,” he demanded.

“You have always been the only man I have ever wanted. I love you, Nicholas,” she said.

He clutched her to him, his mouth coming down hard on hers. She clung to his neck, his silky black hair brushing her hands. His kisses were deep and possessive and she had the dizzying sensation of being at the top of the world.
