“There is something I’ve been meaning to tell you.”
He brought the coffee over and taking Noah from her handed her a cup. “What have you wanted to tell me?”
“That day, that first time I saw you, I thought you were evil sent to drag me to hell. When Joseph punished me, I was sure meeting you was the worst thing that ever happened to me.”
His fingers tightened around the cup. “I would never have left you alone while I finished the project in space if I knew what he would do to you.”
She put a hand over his lips. “Shh, just listen. For a long time now, I’ve known that the first time I saw you was an omen of how good my life would become. Maybe I had to go through all the pain and hardship to be able to appreciate you.” She took a sip of the coffee. “Being with you is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I never thought the wonders you’ve shown me could exist. I never knew I could find a man, a warrior, who would make my body feel such pleasure. And I never thought I would belong to a warrior so perfect that he makes me wake every day happy and eager for what the day will bring.”
“I am merely a warrior who was lucky enough to have the most beautiful breeder in the known galaxies.”
She laughed at his outrageous flattery and kissed him. It was so wonderful to be able to do this. To kiss him without anyone shouting sinner and dragging her off to be punished. “What is my surprise?”
“We will get Noah and Killer, and then we will fly in the shuttle to your surprise.” He watched her carefully.
Susannah smiled at him. “I am not afraid to fly. You can even make the shuttle have windows so that we can look at the world below us.” Her stomach lurched at the thought of looking down at the ground from so high up, but she valiantly kept her smile in place.
Julia had Killer and Noah ready for travel, and, before she could worry about flying too much, they were all on board the shuttle.
She watched Killer sniff the floor, and he then went to sit next to Azagor’s boot.
“Why can’t we know where we are going?” she asked.
“It is a surprise, the kind humans like.”
“You’re not about to tease me, are you? I really dislike the way you warriors tease.” The other women had told her some teasing stories that made her hair stand upright.
“I am superior at teasing, but this is a surprise.”
He wouldn’t say anything else and, to take her mind off the fact that she was flying through the air in a box that could easily fall, she kept Noah entertained. He’d become strong and, with Alissa and Mirabelle determined to teach him to walk and talk, he was progressing faster than Viglar and Madison predicted.
She found it strange to trust in doctors, alien or human, but Viglar had worked miracles with Noah’s arm. She’d seen enough injuries on the farm to know that, without Viglar’s skill, it would’ve grown crooked and the chances were good he’d never have been able to use it. Even Madison had told her she wouldn’t have been able to align the arm with her skill sets.
They landed, and the door opened by itself. It still seemed like magic to her, even though she now knew more than she ever wanted to about how doors could open by themselves. All the other women complained about being kept in the dark if they weren’t careful, but she wouldn’t mind if Azagor was a little less generous with his information.
“The air smells different here.” A breeze came through the open door. It was strangely salty. Susannah picked up Noah and cautiously walked out.
“You are used to the mountain air and the higher elevation,” Azagor said.
Susannah stepped down on soft, white sand. She’d never seen anything like it. She was about to reach down and touch it when a strange rushing sound registered. It sounded like water poured into a bucket, but more--softer and yet somehow much stronger. She looked up and froze in place. Water, blue and endless, stretched before her. There was so much of it, it touched the sky. She’d never seen so much water in one place.
She stumbled forward, and Azagor put his arm around her. “This is the sea.”
“It’s magical,” she whispered. As far as she could see, there was blue gray water. Far ahead of her, the sky and the sea touched, the way the mountains and the sky touched. “My mother said her mother had told her about the sea. But I never thought it could be like this. Sometimes I wondered if she made it up.”
He took Noah from her. “Come closer. It is not safe to go deep, but you can take off your shoes and put your feet in the water.”
“Why is it curling like that?” It curled and rushed to land and then made white foam before it pulled back.
“It is called waves.”
“Magic,” she whispered and laughed when Noah tried to mimic her. She took off her boots. Azagor took off Noah’s boots and lowered him to the water. Or tried to, Noah climbed him like a monkey, screaming at the top of his lungs. After the stoic silence with which he’d endured anything, hearing him scream was a blessing.
“He’s frightened,” she said and held out her hands, but Noah clung to Azagor. Smiling at the way he cradled her son against his chest, looking so handsome, she carefully walked into the sea. Water rushed over her feet and ankles and then drew back. She ran and splashed and when she turned Noah was crowing with delight as Azagor held him upright at the edge where the water barely reached him.
She knelt next to him. “I love you, Azagor. Even when I still thought you might be some devil sent from hell, I was beginning to love you.”
“There is one thing I have to know, my breeder.”
“What is that, my warrior?”
“What is a sea-faring frog?”
She threw back her head and laughed. At his funny question, at being at this magical sea, having her son back, and living a life more wonderful than she’d ever dreamed possible.
“My mother used to say, a frog in the well does not know the great sea. I was never exactly sure what she meant since I’ve never seen the sea before now. But now it makes perfect sense.”
His eyes blazed red fire at her. “I love you, too, my brave sea-faring frog.”
