“Meg and I have started to text each other. I love having a new friend, but it just sucks she lives so far away.”

“I’m glad you had such a good time.”

“Me too, Mom. It was exactly what we needed to make our relationship stronger, and to see if we could actually make this work. Oh, and the best news to come out of my trip was Sam telling me that he’s put in for a transfer to the local office! They’ve had a position open for a while now, and not only is he confident that he’ll get it, but that they’ll allow him to work primarily out of the local office and only have to go into the big office for meetings or special occasions.”

“That’d be fantastic. I’m sure his parents would be ecstatic if he moved back home.”

“I think so. He’s not mentioning it to many people yet until he hears a definitive answer, so keep that to yourself, please.”

“Your, or should I say his, secret is safe with me.”

“So, with him possibly moving here, we were thinking of getting a place together if he does get transferred. So, my plan for now is to hold off on looking any more at places until he knows for sure. Because there’s always the possibility he’ll get transferred, but have to work full-time out of the main office. If that’s the case, then we’d probably look for something that’s a little more centrally-located between his work and my school.”

“That’s probably a good idea to wait then.”

“So, you and Dad are still okay with me crashing here until we know more?” I ask.

“Of course, sweetheart. You know you’re always welcome here at home, and for as long as you need,” she assures me.

“Thanks,” I say, handing her the last of the refrigerator items.

“Do you have any plans tonight?” she asks as she moves on from putting groceries away to making dinner.

“Nope, just planned to hang out here at home and have a quiet evening. I’ve already got my laundry going, and now I’m just waiting for Sam to call once he’s home from work.”

“Ah, well, dinner will be ready in about an hour or so. Once I’ve got it started, I was going to sit out on the deck and drink a glass of wine while I read another couple chapters in my new book.”

I got my love of reading from my mother. She’s always been one to have a book in her hand, or at least within reach. When ebooks became an option, I swear her reading went through the roof, as it was so accessible for her.

“Sounds like a good plan. I might join you, so I can get a little further in the book I’ve been reading the past few days.”

I leave the kitchen when I hear the chime from the washer letting me know it’s finished with the load. I quickly transfer the clothes to the dryer before I take the few items into my room that need to be hung up to air dry. The sound of my phone alerting me to a new text has me reaching for my phone.

Sam: Hey babe. Glad you made it home safely. I’ve been slammed since I walked in the doors this morning. We started a huge new case that’s requiring all hands on deck, and is going to take us a bit. I’ll call you when I get home, I just don’t know when that will be yet. If you haven’t heard from me yet and you’re ready to go to bed, just shoot me a text so that I don’t accidentally wake you up if I was to call.

I read Sam’s text over quickly, feeling bad for him that he’s just now getting to take his first very short break to text me.

Lauren: Hey, sorry you’re so slammed. I hope you get to go home at a decent time. I miss you already and am going to miss you wrapped around me tonight. Love you. XOXO

I busy myself with hanging up the items I brought into my room and then dig out my kindle. I stop in the kitchen long enough to grab a glass of lemonade, then head out to the deck to lie in a lounge chair and read until dinner is ready.

A little while later, I’m pulled from my book with a new text alert.

Zoey: Hey girlie, did you make it back?

Lauren: Yep, got in this afternoon. It was an amazing trip! Can’t wait to see you and tell you all about it. When are you free this week?

Zoey: We could get together Thursday night for dinner and drinks if that works for you? Either go out or you could come over here? If you come here, bring an overnight bag and then you can just crash here, and we can drink copious amounts of wine and dish all night!

  Lauren: Sounds like a date.
