“Lousy creatures,” hissed the king of the spikers, standing up. Blood spurted from his many wounds, but the gaze of the main spiker was full of hatred. “It looks like my two-legged friend didn’t trust me at all, but I didn’t trust him either, so accept his present, and we’ll meet again,” he said, and Darkness swallowed him.
“Is something wrong?” Mohr said, and his gaze darted around until it stopped at the orb, which began to shine. “Run! Now!” The Death Herald exclaimed, pointing to the orb, but it was too late.
A dreadful explosion scattered us in all directions and filled the cave with dust clouds, I heard curses from the mercenaries who were sending the creator of this artifact to the farthest depths of hell.
The ringing in my ears and shaking before my eyes continued for quite a while. Many were injured, three two-legged from Lintirionel’s squad died, but the elf survived and managed to save Hyde, using her insensitivity.
Mohr created a kind of a dome right before the explosion, which saved the rest, but he didn’t have much strength left, so he couldn’t save everyone. My heart was beating faster with fear. Something was wrong.
Something very terrible happened, I suddenly felt so bad that I could hardly move. Walking a little further, I saw something that I would not want to see. Skal lay nearby with his two legs torn off and broken armor.
Alyona noticed me and moved closer, activating the resurrection spell. She tried once, then the second time, the third one, but nothing worked out of it.
The heart was going to jump out of my chest, the girl started crying as she tried to resurrect my friend over and over again, but I knew that what happened couldn’t be undone.
Epilogue
Vladimir Arkonov
Vladimir Arkonov was having a peaceful rest in his bed after another working day. A soft blanket and a comfortable mattress always helped him rejuvenate after hard work, but someone dared to barge in, and he reluctantly opened his eyes.
His tired brain hadn’t had much rest, so it was not good at receiving signals from the outside. After about a minute, Vladimir finally realized that there was an android girl standing before him and she was telling him something. It took him a few more minutes to understand what she was saying.
“It’s a disaster! Go to your office at once!”
“What happened?”
“You asked me to tell you if something important happened to Sergey.”
“Yes, I did,” the researcher gradually came to his senses.
“The capsule’s work is broken. There was a destabilization of consciousness.”
“Why didn’t you tell me at once?!” Vladimir jumped up and rushed to the working table in the next room.
“I repeated it more than once,” the android girl was offended, and the researcher thought once again that this artificial intelligence was too good, but he should forbid her to read any trash on the Internet.
The screens on his desk were all covered with flashing red icons. Something strange and inexplicable was happening. Vladimir plopped down in his chair, and his fingers tapped on the keys.
Tables, charts, graphs, his brain started to work at full speed, thanks to adrenaline. It didn’t take him long to analyze what he had seen.
“Perform the diagnostics of the main capsule systems. Conduct a systematic analysis. Display the log of events preceding the destabilization.”
Scrolling through the log and looking at the screens once again, everything seemed even more incomprehensible. How could this be? Vladimir could not comprehend. The screens showed that, despite the destabilization of consciousness, the character was all right.
The log indicates that an undeclared artifact was activated and that this is what caused the crashes. What the hell happened there?!
“Natasha, come with me,” he said to the girl. “Let’s go to Sergey’s laboratory.”
“Yes.”
“System. Do the data analysis. The full one.”
“All right.”
They reached the place in almost no time. No one has come to the laboratory for a long time since Vladimir did not allow anyone to disturb his employee, who was now lying in a capsule of a deep immersion game, which he designed for six months.
“Natasha, investigate the data from the personal computer, and I will check the capsule.”
“Right.”
Vladimir connected to the neural interface of the capsule, put the diagram of Sergey’s state and of his character in front of him. After he carefully studied all the information provided, he came to the only possible conclusion, but how this could be was absolutely not clear.
“Natasha, are you sure that Sergey controls this particular beetle?”
