It felt so good. Her body was humming. She felt like any battle was a losing one.

  "Don't stop."

"Can I take this off?" He fingered the robe.

"Yeah," she said, just barely audible over an explosion in the movie.

  "Okay."

He didn’t take it off immediately instead turning around to massage her legs. It was a nice cool down allowing her to catch her breath. He worked one leg up and down before switching to the other, and every time he came close to her center she tensed. He pushed the robe up, revealing her panties and hissed, before grabbing each ass cheek in his hand. Gene had never had her ass massaged before, and she regretted having learned about the joys of it so late in life. It felt so damn good.

She cried out reaching up to grab something firmer and closed her eyes as Liam's fingers folded over her flesh. He was so close, yet right there, where she wanted to be touched, he wouldn't touch her at all. He circled around, grabbing her waist and massaging; but as much as she wanted it, there were no inappropriate touches. She felt like she was going crazy, gunshots in the background, darkness from her closed eyes, and pleasure rippling up her spine, putting words on her tongue.

God, she wanted him. Needed him and she wasn't sure how long she could go if he didn't take the initiative. It was her own fault for being so skittish. Maybe if she wasn’t so wishy-washy.

She could feel her arousal getting the cotton between her legs uncomfortably wet. Liam pulled the robe from around her body and discarded it somewhere. Maybe her panties would be next. Gene lifted her hips, moaning openly for the first time since the massage began. He slid them to the side, stroking her butt cheek and she almost cried in frustration before she felt the cool relief of his tongue.

"Yes!" She cried aloud, and he mumbled something like appreciation. He slid his tongue down the back of her thigh to behind her knees. The flick of his tongue in unexpected places had her senses on high alert.

She shivered, struggling to control the situation from behind closed eyes. Liam, having no issues, pushed his face into her ass, licking every inch of skin between it and her aching pussy. He slid a hand underneath her, tilting up enough to suck and fill her with his tongue. With every slow lap of his tongue, Gene let out a soft moan. He licked up the side of her pussy, passing over the hood of her clit, and down the other side.

“You know what I want,” he taunted, humming against her wetness. “Come on my tongue.”

Liam buried his face into Gene’s thighs, clearly not caring about breathing as long as he could have her orgasm. When he stuck his moistened pinky into her untouched anus, she came hard from shock and a violation she didn’t know she could enjoy.

She couldn't hear over the movie and the buzzing of pleasure in her body.

"Please Liam," she said, hoping it wasn’t a one-time loss of control. "Don't stop."

Her pussy contracted around his skilled fingers. His hands coaxed her orgasm out in a sweetly tortuous slow manner.

His hands slipped out of her, and she moaned in frustration. “Don’t worry. I’m coming,” he said over the movie’s loud gunshots, and the shimmying of jeans being pushed to the ground. She didn’t have to wait long before she felt his hard cock pressing against her opening. She moaned but stiffened, shifting so he couldn’t enter her.

  “Condom?”

“Got it.” His hands wrapped around the mounds of her ass, barely able to hold onto the oiled skin as he rubbed his cock between her cheeks.

She relaxed again onto the bed and waited, breathing deeply as he pushed inside her, filling her with his big cock. He didn’t rush, pushing until he filled her to the hilt before pulling out. She wasn’t surprised he fucked her the same way he massaged her, slow and thorough. She had never felt so full and relaxed.

His fingertips grazed her clit, making her shudder. Her body went rigid for a second, struggling to hold on again.

“I want it again,” he said into her ear as his pelvis pounded against her petite frame. His hands gripping her waist, the slapping of their flesh loud and clear, her moans muffled into her pillow, and the clacking of the bed frame against the chest at the foot of the bed was too much.

The man always asked for too much.

She shook her head back and forth against the pillow.

“Uh-uh. Don’t quit on me.” His words followed his hands rubbing against her clit like a small vibrator. “Give it to me,” he said, nibbling on her ear.

“I can’t,” she moaned, turning her head to the side.

He kissed her neck not slowing his pace as his balls slapped against the backs of her thighs. “I don’t believe that,” he said, riding her even harder.

He leaned forward to kiss her, despite the angle and their lips not lining up perfectly. It was messy, and she didn’t care.

“Give it to me,” he grunted, tensing and she liked the idea of Liam losing control.

He fell forward, covering her completely, interlacing their hands above her head and only his lower body moving. He swiveled his hips around, up, down, around, and up, nudging her g-spot, as if their sex was a sensual dance.

“Oh god,” he moaned. “So good, Gene.” It sounded like he was struggling to breathe. “Baby.”

Such a small word, one he had never used before. Not to her. She would hate the fact that he used it in the morning, but at the moment she loved it. It sent her over the edge. A screaming, moaning, choked-up edge, and she came hard, her pussy clenching him as he throbbed inside of her, a thin barrier of latex separated them. He ravaged her body, biting her neck and pulling her close until they were cradled together.

  “That was fun.”

She giggled and sighed. It was something alright.

He took a deep breath and sighed. “I’ll be right back.”

She cringed at their separation and relaxed into the bed. She didn’t move when he came back to wipe her clean or when he turned off the TV and climbed into bed.

The movie was done and instead of turning it off, Gene let the device go blue before going dark in standby mode. Liam climbed back into bed and Gene, not knowing what to do, pretended she was sleeping. It didn’t take a genius to know she wasn’t though. Liam sighed before rolling over to lean above her. He pushed a sweaty strand of hair behind her ear. She waited for him to say something but several seconds of silence passed by before she decided she couldn’t take it anymore.

  “Stop it.”

“Stop what?” he asked, and Gene could hear the smile in his voice.

“Staring. I can feel you staring,” she said without opening her eyes. Even though he was one man, she felt like she could feel him all around her. He was in all her senses, his smell, his taste, his warmth.

  “I can’t.”

She opened her eyes to see him smiling, and in return, she reached up to tap his nose. “Why can’t you?” she asked. His gaze was intense, contentment mixed with something she couldn’t define.

“Because you’re beautiful and I can’t take my eyes off you.”

She huffed. “Enough with the compliments. What do you want?”

“You.” He said it as if that was the easiest thing in the world.

  “Why?”

“Because I know it’s worth it. Everything you have to give, it’s worth having, and I want it.”

She sighed and rolled over, making him rolled to his side as well. Instead of feeling rebuffed, he slid closer, wrapping his arms around her waist. They were spooning. Two nights in her bed and two dates and he wanted more.

“Just tell me something, Gene.” Telling him anything was saying too much.

“What do you want to know?” she whispered. It felt like a frog was in her throat. Why did he want so much? Why did she want to give it to him?

“Anything,” he said. “Who’s your best friend?”

  That seemed easy enough. “Ginger.”

“Does she have red hair?” he joked.

“The reddest,” Gene said with a smile. “
She used to hate that when we were kids, but oddly in college, she never changed it. I thought she would dye it black as soon as we were away from home.”

Liam chuckled, his breath tickling her bare shoulder. “What’s your favorite color?”

“Pink,” she whispered. “But I never wear it. Too girly.”

Liam kissed behind her ear. “Pink is not girly.”

“Right, except boys don’t wear it.”

“Real men wear pink,” he retorted. She didn’t know what to say back. “How old were you for your first kiss?”

“Six,” she said laughing. “He pushed me in the sand and to get him back I kissed him to give him cooties. It was worth it.”

Liam shook his head, laughing into her hair. “Not what I would have guessed.”

  “What about you. First kiss?”

“Twelve. I was scrawny and a nerd. She kissed me at a spin-the-bottle sleepover, and she made me and everybody at the party swear to never bring it up again. She was pissed it was me.”

“If only she could see you now. I bet she would regret it.”

“Oh, she didn’t have to wait that long. One summer. That was it. Puberty hit and I got big enough to qualify for the football team. The only freshman who was playing varsity,” he boasted.

“Good. I hope you didn’t do something dumb like date her. I hope you made her eat her words for the rest of high school.”

“Nope. I was just a dumb kid. A jock and a freshman looking to be popular anyway he could. I didn’t last a week. I forgave her, dated her, and took her to prom.”

“Wow. What a douche,” she said, elbowing him softly.

“I admit it wasn’t my finest moment.”

He was good, buttering her up with questions, making her feel close to him. So good she didn’t see his next question coming. “How old were you when you experienced heartbreak?”

She tensed in his arms, ready to climb out of bed, and he tightened his hold. Nothing but silence passed between them as she struggled, debating whether she would answer him or kick him out.

“Just tell me how old you were.”

If she did, he wouldn’t stop. He would only keep asking for more. She knew men like him. They were never satisfied.

The numbers on her nightstand clock changed, and she waited another minute before answering. “Twenty-five.” She had only had one boyfriend before Arnold and she didn’t really count that as love or anything. It was just something to try before college. For some reason, either because of her ambition or latent femininity, men weren’t really into her. Over the years, she became convinced the only reason Arnold was into her because he thought he could change her.

  “What happened?”

“It was the first time I caught Arnold cheating on me.” She spoke without emotion hoping the sting would hurt less than it did the first time and every time after that.

“There was more than one time?” He seemed shocked.

“There was more than one woman.”

It was haunting to admit and relive it in even the tiniest increments. It had almost killed her to keep living with him for fear she wouldn’t make it on her own. That’s what he told her, that she needed him, and she believed him for a while. For a few months, she was a shell of herself. Staying away so his infidelity would be out of sight and out of mind. But he got sloppy, and his flagrant disregard was her gain. The collateral damage was she lost her marriage. The collateral beauty was she established her own business. Established, though Arnold was doing his best to make her work to own it.

“Who gives you the most hope?” Liam asked, interrupting her unwanted walk down memory lane.

“My Granny Deb,” she said without hesitation.

  “Tell me about her.”

“She’s freaking awesome. Almost eighty and living her life like she’s twenty. When she was younger she was a midwife and a nurse. She helped over two thousand moms birth their children. She and my Grandpa John travel the world. They just finished serving as Peace Corps Volunteers in Nicaragua. Before that, ten years ago they did Peace Corps Honduras.”

  “Wow,” Liam said clearly impressed.

“I know, right? They have three children and twelve grandkids, and they can run laps around all of us, even the babies. Whenever I feel down, I know she would say, ‘them’s the breaks, but don’t let them stop you’.”

  “She sounds amazing.”

“She is, and I really should make more time to call her.”

“I’m happy to remind you when we wake up.”

Gene nodded, tense, and unbelieving it was that easy or simple. Plus, she hadn’t expected another nightcap. Was it rude to kick your neighbor out?

He pulled on her, turning her around until they were face to face. Even in the darkness, she could make out his eyes and the seriousness of whatever he was about to say.

“There’s something about you.” He took her in, staring at her as if she was an anomaly. There was nothing special about her, and if there was, he had barely known her a week, how the hell would he know?

“What about me?” she asked uncertainly.

“Nothing. Just you. I want to see you.” He stared like he could will his way into her soul.

  “What do you see?”

“A girl,” he said before correcting himself. “A woman ... who is fighting so hard to appear strong.” He reached over to stroke her cheek. “A warrior who doesn’t know how to let go.”

It was too close to the truth for her to rebuff.

“It’s okay to let go you know? It’s a sign of strength to know when you need help. You can’t always do it on your own.”

What was wrong with him? Who has sex and wants to go soul searching after? It seemed like a very female thing to do, and she hated that she was thinking that. She prided herself on being a feminist and felt men should show more emotion. It was the very thing she had begged Arnold to do, and here she was angry and judging Liam for doing the same thing.

  “I know,” she mumbled.

“I hope so,” he said, sliding closer to throw his leg over hers, “because I was hoping to one day see past all that armor.”

She didn’t need to ask what armor he was talking about. She knew. The armor she wore had scratches from previous men who had tried the same thing, but it was solid. Or she had thought it was. She could feel it cracking under the pressure of Liam’s gentleness. His touch felt too much like love.

“What do you want from me?” she sighed.

“Honestly? More. That’s it. I just want more from you. I know you’re capable and you’re hurting. I can see it, and I want to help ease it.”

“There’s so much. Where should I start?” she asked, feeling naked at the thought of baring herself.

“Wherever you want,” he said ambiguously. “Where did the biggest hurt come from?”

“Arnold,” she said quickly. She didn’t have to think about that long.

  “Who is that?”

“Arnold Higgins was my first love and my ex-husband.”

Liam pulled her closer until she was talking against his neck. “You mentioned him before.”

“Yeah. He ... hurt me in ways I never saw coming, and maybe I deserved it,” she admitted.

“Why do you say that? I’m sure that’s not true, Gene.”

“It is,” she said, her voice turning strangely monotone. “He left me because I couldn’t give him children. It was the only thing he asked from me, and I couldn’t do that, so he left. Well, first he cheated on me with his secretary. Well his first secretary. I found out and he swore it was nothing. He replaced her and told me nothing had changed between us. Three secretaries later and this one is carrying his baby. He left me before I found that out though.” She stopped and swallowed, feeling cold and achy inside. Admitting her weakness and flaw aloud made her feel small.

  “That sounds cruel.”

“It is.” He was cruel and cold. “But he didn’t use to be that way. He used to love me. Or at least he said he did. And
I believed him. Silly me,” she said, pulling out of Liam’s arms and smiled coldly. “I believed him when he said he’d love me through sickness and health, ’til death do us part. Maybe miscarriages weren’t included in that section of the vow.” She gulped past the lump in her throat. “I lost hope every time I had a miscarriage.” It felt like her throat was hoarse and she licked her lips with her too dry tongue. “And Arnold was cruel enough to blame me for them. He tried to take my business away from me to punish me.”

“That wasn’t your fault,” he said, tightening his arms around her.

It was. Her body rejected anything to do with life, she decided.

“I’m broken.” It was a fact.

“You are not.” Him saying that wouldn’t change her mind. “Did a doctor tell you that? Did a doctor say you couldn’t have children?” He pulled her towards him until they were face to face again. “Did you go to any doctors?” Liam asked carefully and sat up to still hold her hand.

“Some and they claimed there was nothing wrong. The problem wasn’t getting pregnant. The problem seemed to be in staying that way.”

“Then it’s not your fault,” he said, squeezing her hand.

“Of course, it is. Who else could be at fault?” she said tearing up.

“Arnold’s,” Liam said confidently. “Maybe if he spent more time comforting you instead of stressing you out and leaving you alone to worry, you’d have plenty of children by now.”

“You don’t know that,” Gene said, wiping her eye with one hand. It still hurt to talk about it. It still hurt to know Arnold could make her cry, even when she was in the arms of another.

“I know you can’t manage to love your wife and somehow get your secretary pregnant. I know doctors, especially ones who deal with fertility, wouldn’t lie. And I know enough about you to know your instincts are right. If your body was rejecting anything to do with him, it’s because somewhere inside you knew he wasn’t right for you. And you were right.”
