“Because that was a mistake earlier. Look, you and I barely know each other and I can’t keep messing around with you. Like I said before, I’m not interested in having meaningless sex with you or anyone else, for that matter.”

  I sighed.

“Taylor, I’m grateful for your help tonight and,” she blushed, “you definitely know your way around a woman’s body. If I was looking to get laid, I’d definitely give you a call. But, that’s not what I really want or who I am.”

“It might not be who you think you are, but the woman you were a half hour ago seemed to know exactly what she wanted.”

  “I wasn’t thinking clearly.”

  “Thinking clearly is overrated.”

She smiled and shook her head. “Taylor…”

“Lauren,” I said, nearing Mitzy’s house. “I say we talk about this in more depth at your place.”

  “Talk?”

  “Yeah.”

My phone began to ring again and I swore.

Lauren frowned. “You’d better answer Wendy’s call.”

I looked at her in surprise.

“I wasn’t trying to be nosy. Her name flashed across your cell.”

I decided to answer the phone. Apparently, I had nothing to hide from Lauren. She knew all about me. I frowned. “Hello?”

“Oh, Thank goodness, Taylor, I’ve been trying to reach you all evening!”

“Sorry, I got caught up in something.”

“Oh, that’s okay. What time are you going to pick me up?”

“Plans have changed. I can’t make it tonight.”

She took a moment to answer. “You can’t? Why?”

“Something came up,” I said, looking at Lauren, who was watching me with an unreadable expression.

“Oh, well what about tomorrow night?” she asked, sounding disappointed.

“I’m not sure. Let me get back to you on that,” I replied, pulling into the circular driveway.

“You still want to go out though, right?”

At the moment, my only thoughts were on Lauren. “I’ll call you,” I said, hanging up.

  “Nice,” said Lauren dryly.

I shut off the engine. “I barely know Wendy. It’s not like I’m breaking her heart or anything.”

“Maybe not, but you could at least act like you care.”

  “Lauren, that’s not fair.”

She let out a ragged sigh. “You’re right. It’s not. You’ve done nothing but help me tonight and I’m being a bitch.”

“That’s okay. I’ll let you make it up to me,” I replied, wiggling my eyebrows.

Lauren stared at me in disbelief. “Goodbye, Taylor,” she said, grabbing the door handle.

  “Hold on.”

She ignored me and got out of the truck.

I watched as she ran around the front of the house in the rain, toward the guesthouse in back. Not one to give up that easily, I got out and followed her.

  Chapter 11

  Lauren

“Lauren!” called Taylor, as I unlocked the door to the guesthouse.

Sighing, I turned around just as he caught up to me. “What?” I asked, looking up at him.

He gave me a disarming smile. “I’m not done with you yet.”

I took a step back. “Taylor, I’m not having sex with you.”

He chuckled. “Relax. I came for your phone number. You have mine, but I don’t have yours.”

“Really? I would have thought that your contacts list was already plum full of women’s numbers.”

“You’re brutal,” he replied, leaning a hand against my doorframe. “And not to mention, far too presumptuous.”

“So, you’re saying that you don’t have every single woman’s phone number in Jensen on your phone?”

“I’m sure some of them are married,” he replied with a cocky grin. “If they don’t care, why should I?”

I rolled my eyes. “Why do you need my number?”

“You want your car back, don’t you?” he asked.

“Oh. Yes,” I replied, feeling foolish. Here I was, acting like a jealous girlfriend. “I’m sorry.”

“No worries,” he said, his eyes twinkling. “I forgot my phone in the car. Could you write it down on a slip of paper?”

“Sure,” I said, noticing that the rain was finally letting up. “Why don’t you come in?”

  “Thanks.”

I put my purse down on the coffee table and went into the kitchen to do what he’d asked. I then walked back to the living room and handed him my number.

“Thanks.” Taylor folded up the piece of paper and stuck it into his wallet. “Looks like it might be a nice night after all,” he said, glancing out the window.

“It was supposed to clear up around nine,” I replied, looking at the time. It was eight-thirty. “Anyway, thank you for helping me with the car.”

He turned around. “Sure. The house looks great. I barely recognize it,” he said, looking around.

“I guess that Mitzy had it renovated.” The walls had been recently painted a warm almond color and she’d had the carpeting removed, replacing it with a dark-stained hickory wood paneling.

“I see that. She has good taste. I love the furniture, too.”

“Actually, most of that is mine,” I said, nodding toward cream-colored leather sofa. There was also a matching chair and a storage ottoman that I also used as a coffee table.

  “You also have great taste.”

“Thanks. Most of my other stuff is in storage,” I replied.

“No television?” he asked, looking above the fireplace at the painting. It was of a woman standing on the beach. She was holding the hand of a little girl, who was bending down to pick up a rock.

“Not in here. I’ve got one in my bedroom.”

“Did your mother paint this?” he asked, moving closer to look at the signature in the corner of the portrait.

  I smiled. “Yes.”

I didn’t remember anything about her, since she’d died of breast cancer when I was only two. My father had said that her biggest passion in life, besides Barbara and me, had been her paintings. She’d spend hours at the beach, painting sailboats, ocean-views, and sunsets. The picture above my mantle was of the both of us and I cherished it more than anything else that I owned.

“Is that supposed to be you?” he asked, smiling at me.

  I nodded.

“Wow. Your mother was very talented. Are there any other paintings?”

“I have some in storage,” I admitted. “There wasn’t enough room here to put them up.”

“That’s a shame. I would love to see them sometime.”

  I smiled. “Sure.”

He cleared his throat. “Well, I suppose I should get going. Are you sure you don’t need a ride somewhere? I could give you a lift to Carter and Barbara’s if you’d like.”

“Actually, I think I’m going to just stay home and relax. I’ll let them know what’s going on with my car.”

“Okay. If you need anything, call me. You have my number,” he said, walking closer to me.

“I will,” I said, taking a step back.

He smiled down at me in amusement. “Do I really make you that nervous?”

  “No,” I lied.

“You make me nervous,” he said, running a finger down my arm.

I flinched and took another step back from him. “Why?”

“In case you haven’t noticed, I’m having a hard time walking away. That’s never happened to me before.”

Our eyes locked. “What does that even mean?”

He laughed grimly. “I wish I knew.”

Don’t fall for it, I told myself. This is why he’s had so many women…

“How about I make all of this much easier for you?” I replied, opening up the front door. “Have a good night, Taylor.”

He let out a weary sigh. “Goodnight, Lauren.”

I stood aside and watched him go.

  This time, he really went.

>   Chapter 12

  Taylor

After leaving Lauren’s, I went home, took a shower, and made myself a sandwich. When I was finished eating it, I called Wendy back and apologized for brushing her off so quickly.

“So, are you still busy tonight?” she asked.

“No, but to be honest, I’ve had a rough day and just want to get an early night’s sleep,” I lied.

“Darn, I was really looking forward to seeing you.”

  “How about a rain-check?”

“Sure,” she said, still sounding disappointed.

“I’m sorry, darlin’,” I said, staring up at the clock. It was almost ten. I wondered what was happening at the clubhouse. There was still time to meet up with my brothers and do some drinking.

“It’s okay. I have a feeling you’re worth the wait.”

“Thanks, doll. You have yourself a good night.”

  “You, too.”

I hung up and called J.T.

  “What’s going on, brother?”

“Tail? I didn’t expect to hear from you tonight,” he replied. I could hear music and laughter in the background. “What’s up?”

“I canceled my date,” I said. “Where are you? I’ll join you.”

“At the clubhouse. Get your ass down here.”

I stood up and grabbed the keys to my bike. “I’m on my way.”

  ***

Hoss, Chopper, and Buck were also down at the clubhouse, playing poker. After doing a couple of shots with J.T., we both jumped into the game and I spent the next couple of hours trying to keep my mind off of Lauren.

“So, what happened with Wendy?” asked Hoss.

“Changed my mind,” I said, tapping the ash from my cigar.

Hoss grunted. “Changed your mind? Are you telling me you canceled your date with that hot little number to hang with us?”

“As a matter of fact, I did,” I said, blowing out a cloud of smoke.

“Bullshit. She must have stood you up,” said J.T. “You were hell-bent on fucking her tonight.”

“Can’t a guy change his mind?” I replied.

They all looked at me funny.

“Not when it comes to getting laid. You still like chicks, man?” asked Chopper, ribbing me.

“Fuck you,” I said, flipping him off and smiling.

“See, that’s what I’m afraid of. He might be switching sides,” laughed Hoss.

“If I was I wouldn’t be trying anything with you slobs,” I joked. “Although, I’ve seen J.T. without a shirt and I’d definitely do him if I was gay.”

J.T. raised his beer. “Thank you. I just wish more women felt that way.”

“Oh, come on,” I said, tapping his beer bottle. “You’ve gotten plenty of pussy.”

“Not as much as you,” he countered.

“Nobody has,” said Hoss. “But that’s because he doesn’t have any standards when it comes to women.”

  “I have standards,” I argued.

“What are those? They have to have three holes and a set of fun-bags?” laughed Chopper. “Like a ride at the fair?”

“If there’s a ride like that at the fair, give me some tickets,” said J.T. “I’m sick of riding solo.”

  We all laughed.

“You know, I might get a lot of tail but most of what I get is premium,” I said, chewing on the end of my cigar.

“It’s true,” said J.T. “I’ve seen some of the chicks he’s banged and I can’t believe he’s walked away from them.”

“And I can’t believe he doesn’t have a mob of chicks waiting to gut him outside of these doors,” said Hoss.

“I’m up front. I let them know that I’m not looking for a relationship,” I said. “That’s why they all still love me.”

Chopper choked on his beer. “Love you? What about that girl, Amy? Didn’t she stalk you for a while after you banged her?”

He was thinking of Barbara, who’d gone by Barbie, when I’d had her. “Yeah, but she was kooky,” I said.

“Aren’t most chicks?” remarked Hoss, folding his hand.

“Not like that,” said J.T. “Anyway, at this point, I wouldn’t mind a girl stalking me for sex.”

“Fuck one of them broads,” said Chopper, nodding toward two club whores in the corner. Both were on their cell phones, texting. “They’re bored as hell right now. Look at them.”

J.T. grunted. “Sorry, but the thought of putting my dick into something you’ve had yours in doesn’t exactly do it for me.”

“Sloppy seconds doesn’t excite you?” said Hoss, smiling.

“Hey, I haven’t had either of those girls,” said Chopper.

“Bullshit,” said Hoss. “You lying motherfucker.”

Chopper smiled. “Okay. I’ve had the one on the left. The other one, I’ve not had the pleasure of. Come to think about it, hands off of her. She’s mine for the night, unless Tail gets to her first.”

“I’m giving my dick a night off,” I said, throwing my cards down. “I fold.”

“Why? You have a herpes outbreak?” asked J.T.

“If I got herpes, it was from your mother,” I replied. “By the way, how’s her mouth doing? I think I gave her lock-jaw when your old man was out of town.”

  He flipped me off.

Hoss chuckled. “I should send you in to visit my mom over at the Riverdale Nursing Home. She could use some excitement in her life.”

“Tail’s banned from all the nursing homes in Jensen,” said Chopper. “Why do you think he’s really giving his dick a night off?”

  They all roared with laughter.

  ***

I decided to take off around twelve-thirty. I’d only had a handful of beers and had lost over fifty dollars in poker.

“You okay to drive?” asked J.T. as I got up to leave.

  “Yeah. I’m fine.”

He gave me a look of uncertainty.

“Seriously, I’m good to go, brother.”

“Okay,” he replied, still looking a little doubtful. “Call me tomorrow.”

  “Will do.”

It was a cool night and the breeze sobered me up. On the way home, I decided to swing by Lauren’s. I told myself it was to check up on her. To make sure she was okay. The truth was that I was becoming a little obsessed, which both fascinated and irritated me. Most of the time, I never gave a second thought to a girl I’d already had. But not this one. In fact, there was something different about Lauren that intrigued me. She’d been on my mind the entire time I’d been playing cards, which was probably the reason I’d lost money.

After pulling up into the driveway, I shut off the engine and walked around to the back of the house, stopping in my tracks when I noticed a person in the pool.

  It was Lauren.

She appeared to be doing laps and she also appeared to be… naked.

  I grinned wickedly.

  Chapter 13

  Lauren

I had just completed my seventh lap in the pool when I felt someone else jump into the water, scaring the living shit out of me.

“Oh, my God, what are you doing here?” I shrieked, swimming away from Taylor.

“I was in the mood for a swim and decided to drop by,” he said, moving closer to me.

  “After midnight?”

“You’re swimming after midnight,” he reminded me.

“Yes, but I couldn’t sleep and needed to unwind. Besides, I live here and you don’t.”

“Technicalities,” he said, smiling. “So, do you always swim without a suit?”

“Only at night and when I’m supposed to be alone,” I said tightly. “Don’t get any closer.”

“It’s not like I haven’t seen you naked before,” he answered, now swimming circles around me.

  “You need to leave.”

His smile fell. “You really hate me that much?”

  “I don’t hate you. I just…”

Taylor swam closer. “Just what?” he asked softly.

It was then that I notice
d that he was as naked as I was.

  “We already went through this.”

“Did we?” Taylor asked, sliding his hands over my buttocks. He pulled me against his waist and I could feel his stiff penis tapping my stomach.

“What do you want from me?”

“I… I don’t know,” he admitted. “All I know is that I can’t stop thinking about you.”

“Don’t you really mean – you can’t stop thinking about having sex with me?” I asked wryly.

“It’s more than that,” he replied.

  “How do you know?”

“I’ve already had sex with you and I’m not ready to move on. That hasn’t happened to me before. At least, not in a very long time.”

  I sighed.

“Lauren, if you really want me to leave, I will,” he said, touching my breasts.

  “I want you to.”

“You sure about that?” he asked, sliding his hand between my legs.

I moaned and told him that he wasn’t being fair.

“Sorry,” he said, not looking sorry at all.

“We should get out of the pool,” I whispered.

  “Are you kicking me out?”

“No,” I said, grabbing his cock. “Not anymore.”

He began moving us toward the shallow end. When his feet could touch, he pulled my legs around his waist and began kissing me. I opened my mouth to his and sighed in pleasure as he cupped both of my breasts, squeezing them firmly. Then his tongue was on my nipples, licking and biting the nubs, sending delicious waves of pleasure all the way to my clit.

“I want to feel you inside of me,” I said, feeling his cock slide between my inner thighs.

He moved his hips back and forth a few times, his penis rubbing against my sex.

I tried positioning myself so that it would slide in, but he had other plans. Taylor picked me up in his arms and carried me out of the pool, setting me down on the padded wicker sectional. Kneeling down, he pulled my thighs apart, leaned between them, and began licking my slit.

“Sweet Jesus,” I moaned, sliding my fingers into his wet hair.

Taylor stroked and teased my clit with his tongue, eventually adding his fingers until I was bucking and gasping from his ministrations.
