When she pulled a huge, black handgun from her purse, my first instinct was to run, but she wasn’t pointing it at me.
“I want you to tell that bitch not to come for me. The next bitch who I ain’t sent for who comes for me gon’ get a bullet in her fuckin’ ass, so you let her know that. I’m sick of bitches thinking I’m the one to be fuckin’ toyed with! I’m too fuckin’ grown to be fighting over dick!” She cocked the gun. “I ain’t scared to use this gun, Daryn, and that’s for you and that bitch to know.”
She walked toward the door, and I watched her ass jiggle in the loose fitting pants she was wearing. Damn, I wanted her back so bad, and I wasn’t done trying.
“So, can you unblock my number now? I mean, don’t you want to talk about us. I still wanna marry…”
Suddenly, she turned on her heels and got all up in my face, like she was about to slob a nigga down. I leaned in, ready to feel her soft lips on mine, but instead, I felt her mush me in the face hard as hell. I was about sick of those bitches putting their hands in my face.
“Ain’t no us and ain’t no marriage gon’ happen, nigga. Get yo fuckin’ life!” As she walked out, she put the gun back in her purse.
I watched my future wife get in her car and drive off as I pulled my cell phone from my pocket. Handling Nita was the first thing I had to do to get my woman back.
Chapter 20
Angela
The next few days were spent working on Garey. I allowed him to stay at the house with me while I cooked, bathed him, sucked his wood, and fucked him good. I was a woman who believed that if you genuinely wanted something, you had to go after it.
I made him breakfast after the kids left for school. We sat at the table, eating, like the perfect couple, but we were far from it. I didn’t want that bwoy, and after he helped me out, I was going to definitely get rid of his ass.
“Angie, mi been tinking ‘bout what you ask mi to do, but I swear mi a ‘ave second thoughts…”
“What yuh mean second thoughts? We have to do dis. If not, I’m gonna have to tell Omari that mi and yuh was fucking, and dis is yo baby. Yuh already know how ‘im ignorant. Is dat what yuh want to deal wit’?” I looked at him and folded my arms.
This bwoy was behaving like purebred bitch! Whining and shit. If he loved me like he claimed, he would happily do what the fuck I asked him. He was the weakest link, and I couldn’t wait for that shit to be over with, so I could get the fuck away from this weak ass bwoy.
“Baby, listen to mi. I want us fi get ‘im out of the way, so mi and yuh need to get it done. Better sooner than lata.” I grabbed his arm and looked into his eyes, so he could see that I was serious.
“Listen if yuh scared to get di gun, mi wi get it. All youh affi duh is pull da trigger and leave. Stop acting like yuh ‘ave pussy in yuh heart. Mi tink yuh is a badman?”
I knew I would hit a nerve when I said that.
“Of course mi am a badman.”
“Of course yuh are. So, let’s get di son of a bitch out of the way.”
I reached over and started kissing him. I knew how weak he was, and sex would always get him to do what I wanted.
Omari
I was busy the entire weekend with shows in St. Elizabeth, Clarendon, and Portmore. Tired would be an understatement, but shit, it was well worth it. My bank account was fat, and now that Angela was out of my hair, I could finally save. Speaking of her, I had received a call from her earlier. I was on the phone with DiDi though, and there was no way I was going to cut that call to hear her probably bitching at me again.
I grabbed the phone and dialed her number up. I wasn’t in a rush to get on the phone with her, but I was desperate to get a chance to talk to my kids.
“Hello,” she answered all cheerfully, which kind of threw me off because the last time we spoke, she was cussing and yelling.
“Yo, wha a gwaan? Mi miss a call from yuh?”
“Oh, I was calling to see if yuh want to see di kids dem. They been asking for their daddy, so I tink yuh need to see them.”
“Angie, cut out di bullshit, B. Yuh know I’ve been trying to see dem, B.”
“Calm down, Omari. Mi not fighing wit’ yuh anymore. Come see yuh pickney dem.”
“A’ight B.”
I didn’t waste no time. I jumped up out of the bed, but my phone started ringing. I looked at the caller ID; it was Garey. “Yo, boss, wha a gwaan?”
“Mi deh yah, mi Gena. Yo mi a call yuh fi see if mi can borrow yo blower. Mi wha do some yaad work inna di day yah.”
“Yo mi a leave out enuh. But mi can leave it pon di back fi yuh. See the address yah……”
I took the blower and put it in the back for him and then locked my door. I was eager to get out of there before Angela had a change of heart. I jumped on my bike and sped off.
It took me no time to get to Angela’s house. I parked and used my keys to knock on the grill. My kids rushed out, screaming. “Mommy, it’s Daddy. Daddy is here, Mommy!” They yelled in unison.
I won’t lie. That was everything that I needed. Just to see the smile on their faces made my day. Angela opened the grill, and when I walked in, they jumped in my arms. I grabbed up both of them. Tears filled my eyes, so I blinked a few times, trying my best not to show any emotions.
We sat on the veranda and started chopping it up. I looked up and noticed Angela standing there. She was no longer smiling but had a look of jealousy written on her face. I brushed it off and returned my focus to my two yutes.
I ended up spending the rest of the day with them. It was their bedtime, and even though I didn’t want to leave them, I wouldn’t dare spend a night in that house. Angela and I were finished, and I was careful not to send the wrong message.
After I hugged and kissed the kids, I walked out of the house. Angela made her way towards me. “Yuh know yuh can always come home, right?”
“Come on, Angie. Let’s no go deh. All mi want is to see mi yute dem. Listen, here go some money for dem.” I handed her the envelope that held fifty grand.
She snatched the money out of my hand. “Money don’t fix broken hearts,” she said before she walked inside and locked the grill.
I put my helmet on, jumped on my bike, and pulled off. That was one of few times that I actually felt bad about breaking up with Angela. All my life, I wanted the perfect family, the wife and the kids. I had that, but it was far from perfect. I hated the fact that my yutes were the ones who were going to suffer the most, and Jah knew that wasn’t my intention.
I was going to hang out at the spot where the fellas were meeting up tonight, but after the visit I just had, I decided not to. I was calling it a night, so the plan was to go home, smoke, drink and maybe get a chance to kick it on the phone with DiDi.
I glimpsed in my mirror and thought I saw a dark colored vehicle following me. I sped up and noticed the SUV sped up too. I took a quick left turn and rode around Greater Portmore for a while. Maybe I was paranoid, but I wanted to be sure. That was one of the few times I didn’t have my gun on me, because I was visiting the kids. I didn’t see the SUV any longer, so I figured my mind was playing tricks on me. I decided to head home.
I pulled up to my gate and opened it. I then rode inside and locked it. Shit, I forgot to turn the lights on, I thought as I fumbled to open the lock on the grill.
“Pussy, put yo bloodclaat hands up!” a voice whispered.
I felt the barrel of a gun pressed into my back. I knew then; it wasn’t a game. I done fucked up…
POP! POP! POP!
I felt a hot sensation ripping through my body. I lifted my head and saw a shadow take off running… I reached into my pocket, grabbed my cell phone, and dialed 119…
Jah know star, the man dem try fi kill me, I thought as I lay there in excruciating pain. I tried to get up, but my knees were weak. I heard my neighbor yelling as she ran over to me… Blood spilled out of the sides of my mouth. I knew then that I wasn’t gonna make it…

My nephew was finally showing signs of improvement, but he still had a long way to go. As far as time was concerned, we didn’t know what to expect, but so far, the doctors were confident that he would make a full recovery. His grip on my hand was strong as I stood over him. For once, his eyes were open, but he wasn’t able to talk.
“What’s the latest?” I asked my brother as I stroked Cam’s arm.
“They’re gonna move him out of ICU sometime next week, so that’s a good sign. They said he should be able to go home soon because he’s healing pretty fast. Everything looks good, sis,” he explained.
I couldn’t mention his plans for revenge with our mother in the room, so I kept quiet about it. We’d discuss that later.
“Look at God,” my mama threw in.
“I thought you were sleep.” I smiled over at her.
“Nah, baby. I was praying.” She smiled back. “How was your interview?”
“Oh, it went really well. I think I got it. I’ll find out soon. I go back to work on Tuesday, and I’m hoping I’ll be putting in my two weeks’ notice then.” I had already quit Wet Willies, so I was hoping to get word back from Pappadeaux or the Ritz-Carlton soon. Either one of them would be okay with me.
“Oh, you’ve already got it baby. Claim it and it’s yours, in the name of Jesus.”
“Amen,” I added. “So, where’s Imani?” My eyes were on Jameel.
“Oh, she’s on her way back. She went to pick her mom up,” he said.
“Well, I guess that’s my cue. I just had to stop by to see my baby boy. I’m going to head on…”
The sound of my phone ringing interrupted me, and I checked the phone, hoping that it was Omari. It was an international number, but it wasn’t the number that he usually called from. Suddenly I had the feeling that something was wrong, so I stepped out of the hospital room to answer in the hallway.
“Hello?” It was a question, but I was hoping to hear Omari’s voice on the other end.
He had told me that he was busy doing shows, so maybe he had to call me from someone else’s phone.
“DiDi?” The accent was Jamaican, but it wasn’t Omari on the line.
“Yes, who is this?”
“This is Don.”
Why the hell was he calling me?
“Okay…uh…”
“I got your number from Omari’s phone. He… he was shot multiple times last night, and it ain’t lookin’ too good. They did surgery, but his condition’s critical. I’m at the hospital now, and I just thought you should know…”
It was like I couldn’t even hear anything else, but he was still talking. Omari had been shot? What the fuck? By who? Why? Then, his wife’s face popped up in my head. That bitch had something to do with it, and I had no doubt in my mind about that shit.
“I’ll be on the first flight I can get.” Tears burned my eyes. “Thank you for callin’ me, Don.”
“I knew he’d want me to. Just be warned. Angela’s here with him. She won’t leave his side.”
Snake bitch. The sound of her name coming out of his mouth infuriated me even more. It didn’t even matter that I had to go back to work soon. I had to get to Omari, and I had to figure out how I was going to do it. A last minute flight to Jamaica was going to cost a lot more than I’d planned on spending. Being between jobs meant that I was on a tight budget that I wasn’t used to. Shit, I had to think of something. Then it occurred to me.
After wiping my eyes, I strolled back into the room with a huge smile on my face.
“Speaking of jobs, I just got a call about another job that I applied for. They want to interview me tomorrow. Although it’s a Saturday, they’re going to make an exception for me.”
“Good, baby girl.” My mother grinned, all giddy like.
I felt horrible for lying to her.
‘Lord, please forgive me for this,’ I said to myself.
“The only thing is, it’s in Jamaica and…”
“Jamaica?” my mother asked as if she was taken aback. “Why would you apply for a job all the way there?”
“Why not?” Jameel cut in. “I mean, she wants to be a chef, and livin’ in Jamaica would be the shit.”
“Watch your mouth!” Mama spat at him with her face balled up.
“Sorry, Ma, but I’m for real. That would be good for her, and we can go visit. Dang, sis, you gotta go take that opportunity. For real.”
“How am I going to afford a flight?” I asked, knowing that he would offer me the money.
That was the whole point of my façade. I couldn’t let them know that I was running back to Jamaica to check up on a married man, who had possibly been shot because of me.
“I got you, sis. When do you have to leave?”
“Like now.”
“You’ve got the key to the crib. Just get what you need outta the safe. You got the combination.”
“Are you crazy Meel. Your sister can’t go all the way to Jamaica by herself.”
I looked back at my mother. “Ma, I’m a grown woman. I’ll be okay. Besides, you pray all the time. Just pray for me a little bit more than usual.”
She sighed. “Okay, just be safe, baby girl. You know I worry about you both.”
After walking over to her, I kissed her cheek. “I’m gonna hurry up and go so I can deposit the money in my account. It’s only one o’ clock, so I should be able to make it.”
“Yeah, sis. Go ahead.”
I hugged Jameel. “Thank you, bro.”
“You already know,” he said as he squeezed me tightly.
After that, I planted a kiss on Cam’s forehead. Knowing that he was going to be okay made it easier for me to leave. On my way out of the hospital, I said a quick prayer for Omari.
“Lord, please let Omari survive this. He was wrong, but he does not deserve to die.”
As the tears started up again, all of a sudden, it occurred to me. I needed him to be okay, because… I… I was falling in love with him.
To be continued…
Part 2 (the finale) is coming soon.
