She stroked his hand resting just under her breasts. “She won’t rule alone, Brishen. You’ll still be regent until Tarawin is an adult.”

“That role I’m happy to take on. With you by my side, I’ll relish it.” He bent to kiss the sensitive spot under her ear.

A pleasurable shiver rode down Ildiko’s back and arm. “I much prefer Princess Consort over Queen Consort anyway.” And far, far more than Queen Regent. She truly understood now why Brishen hadn’t welcomed his elevated status as monarch.

A faint frown line stitched her brow. “What’s that?”

“I’ll never be able to call you Queen Ildiko. It has a nice ring to it.”

Ildiko resisted the urge to turn and instead gripped his hand in hers. She stared at his beloved, scarred face, the black eye patch and yellow eye, the toothy smile behind the lovely mouth that drove her to distraction. “No. Nothing so grand. I’m content to live my life as just Ildiko,” she said softly, repeating words similar to those he once whispered in her hair when he thought her asleep. “Who is loved by Brishen.”
