Chapter1
Charlotte James walked home from dance practice, legs sore and shoulders tired. Today marked the first day of open gym before the upcoming auditions for Jersey City’s summer production. She still wasn’t sure what the production was going to be, but she was sure that she wanted the lead role. She had only been in the city for a week, but she was already working hard to become a better dancer. Charlotte was disciplined in everything she did and was willing to do whatever it took to get the lead role. She didn’t know any of the other dancers at practice, so it was hard to tell what the competition would be like. Still, she had the confidence that it took to make a lead dancer.
On her walk home, she looked across the bridge to see Manhattan standing proud, twinkling back at her. It took an extra ten minutes to walk down the street that allowed her to see the city, but it was the exact encouragement she needed to keep her pushing through the grueling practices before her audition. She had to remind herself what future might wait for her if she remained dedicated. She looked back to see Jersey City behind her, shining as well but not nearly as bright. She thought about all the lights she could see. It was well past dinner time but not too late to expect that everyone was already in bed. There were still some late shows that needed to finish up.
Seeing the city also partly hurt Charlotte. She had been so close to being able to live in the concrete jungle herself but ended up messing up an amazing opportunity over one silly mistake. She had been given a full scholarship to one of New York’s finest dance schools, but a stupid decision at the end of her senior year took that all away. She tried not to think of her past mistakes and instead to guide her determination towards the future. She could dwell on the things she should have or could have done on her entire thirty-minute walk home. Instead, she knew that it was best to push those regrets out of her mind, so it could stay clear with the motivation to create a better life.
Charlotte was almost home, excited to get inside and take off her elastic dance clothes. She was holding her ballet slippers in one hand and water bottle in the other. She didn’t have much else since she had just gone straight from home to practice. She could have taken a cab home, but since she had only started her current serving job a week ago, she knew that it was best to save her money.
It had been a long winter in New Jersey, so she was excited that it was finally getting warm enough to walk home at night. She was a little nervous, however, being a young girl walking home alone at night. She felt like less of a target than she would if she looked like the typical vulnerable girl. If she were white, she might have been more of a target.
She liked how New Jersey felt like a city but reminded her of home as well. The city was able to combine tall buildings that made it feel like downtown, but nicer Victorian style houses dotted throughout made her feel like she was back in the suburbs. If she wasn’t at home with her parents, she would have wished she was getting settled into a dorm with her friends in the city. Instead, she had to settle for this option: living in Jersey City with her grandmother. She was getting closer and closer to her home, being able to now see her grandmother’s bedroom light through the branches that lined their street. They lived in a wealthier part of the city, though Jersey City itself didn’t scream that it was filled with affluent people.
Her feet were sore, and she was looking forward to taking a bath and relaxing her muscles. She exercised every day, but the instructor at the open gym that night was brutal. They held optional practices at a school gymnasium at night for people who wanted to improve their dancing skills and tighten up some routines before auditioning the following week.
The instructor showed the dancers some of the moves that would be a part of the ballet, so they would have an idea of what the live auditions would be like. Charlotte could have easily skipped those, but she thought that getting this opportunity would certainly help make her a better dancer in the long run. She was only ten feet from her grandmother’s front gate when a sense of dread washed over her entire body.
Someone had come up behind her and grabbed her violently, shoving a gun into her spine. She tried to scream out, looking up towards her grandmother’s window. The light had gone out, and a hand had grabbed her mouth to keep her from screaming. Her first instinct was to bite the hand, but she knew that if she did, she might feel something worse than the gun in her spine.
“Don’t say a word and empty your pockets,” the deep voice told her. She dropped her shoes and water bottle, slowly reaching towards her pocket to empty what little she had inside. She didn’t carry her wallet on her for this exact reason, but they would likely be interested in the expensive phone in one pocket and $20 bill in the other.
“Please don’t hurt me,” she cried, turning around and reaching into her pockets, hoping to find a weapon herself. She handed over the money and phone and hoped he would leave her right there. She was close enough to home that the police might even get there quickly enough to catch the guy. But then she realized that wasn’t likely to happen.
“This is all you got? I don’t believe it. Take your coat off,” he instructed her, pointing to her zipped-up hoodie. She didn’t have anythin
g hidden elsewhere and feared what else he might take if that wasn’t enough. She slowly unzipped her jacket and handed it over to him, her only possessions now being the sports bra, underwear, and leggings she was wearing. She was standing right in front of a house, but all the lights were off, and she didn’t see any other activity on the street.
“What a waste. Come on, let’s go towards the alley,” the mugger instructed, pointing to a sidewalk that led down the side of her grandmother’s house. It led to an alley that was less likely to have any people than the empty street where they were She reluctantly walked down the sidewalk with the man behind her, not sure what horrors awaited her behind her grandmother’s home. She thought about how she might be able to run into the house but remembered her keys were in the hoodie that the mugger was holding. She knew that this might be it. She never thought it would happen to her, but when she made it to the alley and turned to face the mugger, Charlotte thought she was about to be raped.
He threw her jacket onto the ground and started to unbutton his pants. Charlotte wanted to run but felt frozen. She didn’t want to get shot in the back either. Just as she thought she might pass out, she saw a dark figure walking down the alley.
“Hey bro, what are you doing?” The dark figure became clearer, and Charlotte realized it was a tall and handsome Italian man that was walking towards the two. The mugger quickly zipped up his pants and turned around to frantically face the man.
“Angelo! Sir, I was just trying to get a little lucky, you know?” he told the Italian man. Angelo looked at the mugger and then at Charlotte. It was pretty obvious she wasn’t interested in being with the mugger, and Angelo picked up on this. She had tears streaming down her face, and though she was in gym clothes, it was clear she wasn’t a “lady of the night.”
“Doesn’t look that way to me,” Angelo told the mugger.
“Listen, boss, I was just trying to have a good time,” the mugger told him.
“Are you having a good time?” Angelo asked Charlotte. She shook her head no. The mugger looked at her, and while his back was turned, Angelo struck him hard across the face. The mugger fell to the ground, dropping his gun. Charlotte got on her knees as well, not sure if she would get pulled into the fight. While the mugger was on the ground, Angelo gave him a few good strikes to his side.
“If I ever see you on this block again, or anywhere that she is, I’ll be sure to have a “good time” with you and your gun instead. How does that sound?” he told the mugger, coiling on the ground. Angelo reached down to grab his gun and put it in the back of his pants. He walked over to Charlotte who was crouching down in the alley. He grabbed her hand, lifted her up, and walked her down the sidewalk.
“Thank you. I don’t know what I would have done,” she cried to Angelo.
“That guy’s a coward. You won’t be seeing him again, don’t worry. You new here? I haven’t seen you around,” he asked her.
“Yeah, I’m living with my grandma for the summer. Right here actually,” she told him, pointing to her grandmother’s house once they walked down the sidewalk and back to the main street.
“Well then, I guess I don’t have to worry about you getting home safe. He won’t be bothering you again. You should try to take the train next time; it’s not safe out here for a broad like you,” Angelo said, not afraid to let his thick Jersey accent take over. Normally, Charlotte thought those accents could be a bit much, but on Angelo, it was incredibly charming.
“I’ll do my best. Thank you, I don’t know how to repay you,” she told him.
“Don’t worry about it,” he said, walking away slowly. He lingered for a moment and looked at Charlotte. Though she was in her gym clothes, she still radiated through the entire street. She had intensely hazel eyes, thanks to her half-black mother. Her skin was smooth like dark chocolate, thanks to her father, and the streetlights illuminated to reveal perfectly dewy skin. Her jaw was strong and angled perfectly to a point right below her pouty lips. She was still just a young woman, fresh out of school, but her face was mature and made her look older. Her bright eyes and bouncy curls still kept her youthful. “Hey, what’s your name?”
“Charlotte,” she told him, revealing a bright smile underneath her plump rosy lips. “You?”
“Angelo,” he told her, smiling back. He had dark brown eyes that felt like they swallowed Charlotte whole. His eyebrows perfectly lined them, pointing towards his strong nose that stretched down to his five-o’clock shadow. He had longer wavy black hair that he had partially tucked behind one ear. His muscles barely fit inside his red polo, and his sweatpants revealed that he hadn’t been expecting to have to leave his own house that night.
“Angelo, do you want to come inside for some tea or something else? It’s the least I can do to repay you,” she told him, giving a cheeky smile.
“Yeah, that actually sounds great,” he told her. He followed her down the sidewalk just a bit and up to her grandmother’s front door. She had managed to grab her hoodie from the alley, and luckily, her keys were still safe inside the front pocket.
“My grandmother’s probably already asleep, so we’ll have to be a little quiet,” she told him. Her house was a basic old New Jersey house that had probably been there for 100 years. When they walked in, they were immediately in a long hallway with stairs leading to two bedrooms, and archways on the left and right leading to the living room and dining room. The hallway led straight back to the kitchen, where Charlotte and Angelo were headed. She immediately put a kettle of water on to boil and helped to make Angelo feel at home.
“That guy seemed to know you,” Charlotte said, getting the mugs ready for some tea.
“Yeah, he used to work for me. Not anymore. He’s too much trouble,” Angelo told her.
“Oh, do you own your own business?” she asked.
“Something like that. I inherited my father’s construction company,” he explained, sizing up the kitchen.
“Do you want some lemon?” she asked.
“Plain’s fine,” he told her. They sat in awkward silence for a few moments while the water boiled, but the kettle’s whistle eventually broke the air. She took it off immediately so as to not wake up her grandmother. She poured them both a steaming cup and took it to the kitchen table.
“So, are you from here?” she asked him.
“Yep, born and raised. I live just on the other side of the alley. I’m surprised we haven’t seen each other much,” he told her.
“I just go to dance practice and work. I haven’t been here that long either,” she told him. She explained her situation, and he did his, revealing that he and his two brothers recently lost their father. They talked for what felt like ten minutes, but Charlotte quickly realized it was at least an hour. She finished her tea and knew she should probably head to bed. She stood up, grabbed their mugs, and took them to the sink.
“Well, I should probably head to bed. I don’t know what to say. Thank you again for, well, for saving my life,” Charlotte said. She didn’t know what that man would have done to her. She stood next to the table, waiting for him to stand up, though she really didn’t want him to leave. He sat in front of her and gave her a long look in her eyes.
“Can I kiss you?” he asked. Charlotte was caught off guard, but that was exactly what she had wanted. She slowly nodded, and he leaned in, planting a long and hard kiss on her lips. His mouth was smooth like velvet, and Charlotte didn’t want to let go.
He grabbed her face, starting to run his fingers through her hair. She felt a little self-conscious that she might smell after the grueling dance practice, but her brain was buzzing so hard from the kiss that she tried not to dwell on that for too long. He reached his hands down towards her waist, and she wrapped hers around his shoulders. They stood in the kitchen and kissed for what felt like half an hour before she pulled back, realizing it was only a few minutes.
“We have to be really quiet,” she said, worried what her grandmother might think if she walked into the kitchen just
then. Charlotte grabbed his hand and led him up the stairs, going slow so the wood wouldn’t crack and make too much noise as they walked around.
She led him into her bedroom. She hadn’t been there long and wasn’t planning on staying past the end of August, so she hadn’t decorated the room. Instead, it was still in the style of her grandmother’s taste, floral wallpaper and bedsheets that could hurt your eyes if you stared too long.
Neither Charlotte nor Angelo seemed to care about the décor at all, as they were too busy in each other’s faces to notice. As soon as she shut the door, he grabbed her from behind, kissing her neck slowly. Charlotte was scared at first, still processing the mugging that happened just moments ago. She felt his hands run across her stomach and felt a sense of relief. He led her to the bed and pushed her down onto her stomach. He slid off her leggings, pulling her underwear off at the same time.
She crawled onto the bed more while he slowly kissed her back. She flipped over and took her sports bra off, revealing her perfectly shaped breasts. He took off his own shirt and sweatpants, crawling over Charlotte, now laying perfectly in the middle of the bed. He slowly kissed her neck and chest, reaching a hand down in between her legs.
He touched her slowly, feeling her wetness spread across his hand. He sucked on her neck a bit, giving a few nibbles. It was irresistible, but Charlotte pushed him back, worried her grandmother might see the marks. He pushed his hand inside her deeper, causing her to let out a small moan.
“Shhh, we have to be quiet,” he told her teasingly. She pulled his hand out, afraid she might not make it much longer. She pushed him on the bed and straddled him, reaching down to kiss his chest. Her bouncy hair tickled his firm pecks as her lips ran down closer to his penis. She could see it growing underneath his underwear, pulling the elastic down to reveal the biggest one she had ever seen. She slowly wrapped her mouth around it, taking it in as slow as possible. She spent some time down there while she felt him squirm around, abs tightening. He started to moan too, signaling it was time to move on.
