Grave Doubt (The Jacob Lomax Mysteries Book 5)
Page 21
“There was no reason,” I said.
“Yes, I suppose you’re right. Besides, Vivian has suffered enough.”
We both knew she’d suffer more. She’d have to live with the certain knowledge that her first husband had deceived her, used her in an attempt to steal money, and murdered Lawrence Foster with an ice pick.
It was this last fact that caused me some concern.
Should I tell Nora Foster? As far as she knew, her husband had died in an unexplained midair explosion. Would it help her to know the truth—that he’d already been dead when the plane blew up, a sliver of metal rammed into his brain?
Somehow, I doubted it.
Still, I called her. Although it took me a few days to work up the nerve. Not because of her. As I said, I’ve never been too good with kids. But what the hell, maybe I should try harder.
“I’d like to pay you back,” I told her.
“For what?”
“The dinner last week.”
“Don’t be silly.”
“Well, I have three tickets to the Rockies game this Sunday. Would you and Brian like to go?”
“Oh, Brian would love it.”
“Brian. Well, good.”
“And so would I,” she said. I could hear the smile in her voice.
Oh, by the way, Mrs. Finch evicted Sharon Hoffman. The apartment’s still vacant, if you know anyone who’s interested.
