“It’s yours. Now, you don’t mind if I finish this beer and visit with Vix, do you? While you two go check out the flatlands?”
Chapter Twenty-One
Jared’s wolf was ecstatic. He panted and ran and ran, chasing Darby’s beautiful grayish white wolf across the plains. They’d frolicked in the water at Seeker’s Spot. They’d gone to the top of the mesa and checked out the mustangs.
From a distance, they’d seen Luke and Judd, also in wolf form. Jared had paused to howl at them. They’d howled back.
Darby had given howling a shot, but she was so new it sounded like rusty gears grinding. She’d practice. He’d help her. They had time.
Finally, beat and out of breath, they’d returned to the cabin, and he’d shifted and helped guide her to a shift which was no less excruciating and left her bawling and sobbing in his arms.
“It’ll get better,” he murmured in her ear, carrying her over the threshold of the cabin which was now going to be their home.
Well, it would as soon as she said yes. But she would. He had no doubt about it.
He placed her in the shower to wash the flatlands dirt off her body and held her as he’d rocked her body to sleep. The scars her father had left on her were fading on the outside, and he’d do his damnedest to make sure they faded on the inside.
This was Jared’s mission in life. To make those scars go away.
“How do you feel about living here with me? Forever?” He whispered against her temple, practicing the words. Thinking how he’d say them to her when she woke up. How they’d sound.
“I’m in,” she murmured. “So very in.”
