  The Handoff

It’s Spring Break. Mack has left for New Zealand to win back his girl and he asks Finn to do him a favor—keep an eye on his little sister, Layla. Finn has his reservations about the party girl, but he isn’t about to let one of his best friends down, so he agrees. Unfortunately for him, he has no idea what he’s getting into…or the effect this dynamic beauty will have on him.

Layla Mahoney likes to party. It’s the only sure-fire medicine for helping her forget the fact her father’s dead and a new guy has taken his place. But when she’s drunk, Layla has a big mouth…and the wrong friends. Unable to remember what she’s been up to at her various parties, Layla falls into a nasty trap. Thanks to some compromising photographs, Layla is now under the thumb of the person she hates most in this world—her stepbrother, Derek. With Mack gone, she’s forced to turn to someone who’s always kept his distance, a good guy who has never had time for her partying ways. Letting Finn in on her dark and dirty secrets is something she never planned to do, but his tender strength and quiet protection draws it out of her, creating a bond between them that neither saw coming…and a whirlwind of problems that they’ll only survive if they stick together.

  Note from the Author

I actually came up with this story line a few years ago. When I started creating the Nelson High world, I figured it’d make a really good fit. I changed and adapted the original concept, of course, but the main premise is still the same. I really wanted to write a story from a bully’s point of view. I wanted to create a redeemable character, someone who could learn from her mistakes and become a better person. Writing Kaija was an absolute pleasure. I love how she eventually faces up to her demons and owns her mistakes.

I also love Mack’s journey. It’s so easy to fall in line with everyone else’s expectations. Finding the courage to break the mold can be really hard, and I love how Kaija exposes Mack’s independent streak and allows him to chase after the things he really wants.

I know some people scoff at love at first sight or stories involving insta-love, but I do think it exists. Some people are lucky enough to meet their soulmate and know it after one look. It’s been a total thrill being able to portray a love story like this.

If you’re looking for me in the book, you’ll find me in Eloise. I was the Kiwi Girl who lived in remote parts of the world and returned to Macleans College, the clueless, frightened kid with the weird accent. Thankfully for me, I wasn’t bullied to the same degree and I never reacted the way Eloise did, but I understood her pain. High school can be a mighty ocean, and it can get pretty lonely there sometimes. I’m so grateful to my supportive parents who helped me find my courage and who wouldn’t let me hide away like I so desperately wanted to.

As always, this book is a group effort. I want to thank Rae, Cassie & Beth for being so instrumental in making Mack and Kaija’s story what it should be. Thanks again to my awesome brother for the flea flicker play suggestion, and to my husband for making sure I got the rugby and rugby league stuff right! I grew up in a very sporty family and I’ve married a sports nut, as well, so it’s great to be surrounded by so much knowledge.

Thank you to my amazing proofreaders and my advanced reader team. Your opinions, reviews, corrections, and all-out love for these characters inspire and motivate me. You guys are the best.

To everyone who has read this book, thank you for your time. I really hope you enjoyed it. I can’t wait to share the rest of this senior year with you!

And finally, I’d like to give a special mention to God. Every story is a gift from Him, and I want to thank Him for helping me craft The Red Zone.

I’ll be back in June with Finn and Layla’s story. I’m SO excited to write this one. Finn is one of my favorite characters in this series, and I can’t wait to get inside his head. See you again in June.

  Until then….happyreading

  About the Author

Jordan Ford is a New Zealand author who has spent her life traveling with her family, attending international schools, and growing up in a variety of cultures. Although it was sometimes hard shifting between schools and lifestyles, she doesn’t regret it for a moment. Her experiences have enriched her life and given her amazing insights into the human race.

She believes that everyone has a back story…and that story is fundamental in how people cope and react to life around them. Telling stories that are filled with heartfelt emotion and realistic characters is an absolute passion of Jordan’s. Since her earliest memories, she has been making up tales to entertain herself. It wasn’t until she reached her teen years that she first considered writing one. A computer failure and lost files put a major glitch in her journey, and it took until she graduated university with a teaching degree before she took up the dream once more. Since then, she hasn’t been able to stop.

“Writing high school romances brings me the greatest joy. My heart bubbles, my insides zing, and I am at my happiest when immersed in a great scene with characters who have become real to me.”
