For the Least of These

  “Me too,” Gwen echoed.

“I sure can. In fact, I bet we can fly your kites up so high, your ma will be able to see them from up in heaven.”

“Maybe we can write her a note and send it up with the kite,” Gwen suggested. “She’d want to know you came and got us.”

Taken aback by Gwen’s request, Wyn looked around for some help. “I don’t know if...”

“That’ll work,” Paul said. “I’ll get some paper, the kids can each write a quick note, and we’ll attach them to the kite strings.”

When the notes were ready, Paul made some last-minute adjustments of the string and attached the children’s messages.

Meanwhile, dozens of children spread out across the green, trying to give one another enough room so their kites wouldn’t tangle together. The afternoon breeze wasn’t very strong. The heavier kites tended to lose their lift early and crash to the ground. A few kites headed directly for the trees at the far end of the green and got snared in their branches.

Kate held her breath as Wyn coached each of his children in turn. He gave the kites a running start, then hurried back to the kids to make sure their brightly colored kites continued to rise and catch the stronger gusts above the treetops.

Attached to the strings, the squares of white on which the children had written notes to their mother grew smaller and smaller as the three kites raced skyward.

Struck with gratitude for the Lord’s blessings on this family, Kate recalled Matthew 19:14, where Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

Taking Paul’s hand, she continued to watch the flight of the kites and said a silent Amen.
