The wizard started to tremble. He dribbled revolting green stuff and fell off his stick. The priestess lifted him onto her broomstick, hid the queen’s wand inside her robe and disappeared.
I followed some distance behind. The priestess took the wizard inside the Grey Caves. A minute later, I saw her run out, dribbling and shaking. She raised her hand, but before she could hurl the queen’s wand away, it shot like an arrow out of her trembling grasp and travelled over the hills. I saw what I had come to see. I knew whereabouts the wand had landed. I flew back.
Thelma remembered she’d always kept a small pouch with the queen’s magic dust in a secret corner of the valley. She found it and used it on the spiders, turning them into butterflies, not fairies. There was a tiny bit left and she used it on herself with the wish that she would grow big, strong and bold to keep the butterflies safe and look after Blossom Valley, until the day the spell ran its course.
“That’s it George.” Plato concluded with a long, exhausted sigh. “You can close your mouth now.”
George blinked, in dumbstruck silence. After a while, he managed to mumble a few words. “Conti was right! The groans and cries he was hearing in his pond weren’t his imagination. What will happen now, Plato?”
“Our minds were troubled enough in the last few days, George. Let us not trouble them any further. We shall know when the time comes. Now, let us fly back to Blossom Valley.”
