  Ali pats the diaper bag. “Always prepared.”

  A lot of guys my age would find this domesticity boring, but not me. I love it. I fucking love it. Wouldn’t trade it for anything.

  When we’ve pretty much destroyed the platter of tacos, and sweet Jessie is yawning over her snack puffs in the high chair, Ali looks at me. “I have news.”

  “Oh? Good or bad?”

  “Well,” she says, “I think good. Surprise news, though.”

  I reach across the table to take her hand. “Whatever it is, we’ll make it through together. Right?”

  She smiles that smile that so captivated me at sixteen. “I’m going to have to take some time off later in the year. Around Thanksgiving.”

  “That’s six months away,” I say.

  She just nods, still smiling.

  I don’t get it.

  She leans back from the table and pats her stomach, and then I do get it. “You’re pregnant?”

  She nods.

  “Again? So soon after Jess?”

  Nod.

  “Another baby?”

  Nod.

  I’m speechless.

  And then her eyes light up. “Congratulations, daddy!”

  Dreams come true sometimes. Mine sure have.
