“Love you, babe,” he said through gritted teeth.

“I love you, Bryce.” I knew saying those words were as bad as meeting him for one last fuck. It complicated the hell out of things. I moved my ass up and down against his thrusts, grabbing his hands and squeezing, taking him in, the pressure growing, the feel of his cock throbbing inside me too much for me to handle. I came again, Bryce ramming away, tensing as his climax crashed forward.

Bryce moaned and squeezed my hands, his warm jets of cream emptying inside me. When he slowed, he inched out of me, leaving behind a trail of come. When he exited, I felt him dripping down between my lips.

He kissed the back of my head, my neck, my cheek. He rolled to the side and pulled me with him, the two of us spooning, his cock still hard against my ass. I pushed back against him, and he moved my hair away from my face, kissing my ear, his breath warm and sensual. He put his arm over me, across my breasts, resting his hand beneath my arm.

It had been too long since a man treated me as well as Bryce had, allowing me to sleep in his arms, my thoughts on what the following day might bring. Yes, people had seen us out together, but nobody had paid attention to us getting on the elevator. Maybe we were going to the rooftop to admire the lights of Orlando. Or maybe we were going to view the stars. I moved from his arms, his snoring lite, and left the bedroom.

Looking out the window at the closing city, I prayed that I’d not made a mistake. I tried not to think of my father’s disappointment or the fact I may have made things much harder on William. My heart had led me down the dreams of yesterday, when I was young and worldly possessions meant nothing. I considered all the ways I could make Bryce and I happen. I rolled them around in my mind, justifying my actions one moment and chastising myself another. Tears began as the struggle inside grew. I loved the man, but I also loved the Hurricanes.

From somewhere behind me, my phone rang. I’d completely forgotten about Julie. She would want all the juicy details. I would give them, of course. Every last detail. The thought of her in awe made me smile. I thought maybe tomorrow wouldn’t be so bad. It would all be okay. We’d figure out everything out. Love always did.

  CHAPTER NINE

  Bryce

I opened my eyes to find Madison standing at the window. The sun gave her an angelic glow. A combination of her thin white robe and the sunlight allowed me to see the body beneath. Sunlight shone between her legs, the outline of her lips deliciously apparent. We’d been made for each other. Madison turned, and she was as beautiful as the day we first met.

I pushed back the covers and put my hands behind my head, wanting her to see what she had been missing for so many years. My cock sprung to life, and I made it twitch, catching her eyes.

“Last night was amazing,” she said. “I’d almost forgotten.”

“I hadn’t,” I said. “I never forgot what touching you felt like. Never forgot what kissing you felt like. And I certainly never forgot what being inside you felt like.” I patted the bed next to me.

Madison glanced at the window and then smiled. She untied her robe and let it drop to the floor. As much as I hated the fucking situation we were in, I still found myself lucky. Madison's intelligence, looks, and body were a wicked combination I had yet to find since she’d walked away. And now the combination was back.

“You like being in charge, don’t you, Bryce?” She took two steps forward, my cock aching.

“Especially since you like being submissive,” I said. “That’s why you run.”

“I thought you liked the hunt?” she asked and shrugged. She moved to the foot of the bed. “But the one thing about you, you love to eat pussy.”

“Right on both counts,” I said. I glanced between her legs. She followed my eyes.

“I have something for you,” Madison said and crawled between my legs. She grabbed my cock and lowered her mouth over me, the head disappearing, becoming wet and warm.

I watched her head bob up and down, watching my cock move in her mouth and coming out wet. She glanced up at me, her beautiful green eyes shimmering. Her hand worked in unison with her mouth, rotating in small twists. She grabbed my balls and squeezed, her eyes sparkling when I squirmed. Then I felt the tip of her tongue against the underside of my cock, licking while her lips sucked. She’d learned a new technique, and I wasn’t sure I wanted to know where or how she learned it. Her blow jobs had always been exquisite, but something had changed. Improved.

“Bring your ass up here,” I said.

Madison removed me from her mouth. “You asking or telling?”

“Telling.” I moved my hands toward her, and she crawled up, turning her ass and sticking it in my face. She moved her mouth back to my cock, and I devoured her spread lips hovering over my face.

Back in college, we learned this new skill. Coming together, holding back until we were both ready. As soon as I felt the smallest tremor working through Madison’s body, I relaxed and let it happen. And just like the college days, we came together.

Madison turned and placed her head on my chest, her leg over mine. “Better than I remember,” she said.

“Hell, I think we’ll be fucking into our nineties,” I said. “Though I might need a day or two to recover.”

Madison laughed. “I doubt it.” She looked at me. “Thank you. I enjoyed last night.”

  “And this morning?”

She kissed my cheek. “What’s not to enjoy?” Her eyes sparkled, and a smile stretched across her lips. “I don’t think any of our friends were ever as much in love as we were in college. People wanted to be us, and not because of my money and your stardom, but because of the love we shared.”

I nodded. “We did everything together, remember?” I asked. Madison nodded. “Guys on the team could never figure out why I chose you over them.”

“I’m sure their blow jobs would not have been as good as mine,” Madison laughed when she saw the disgust on my face. “I’m just saying.”

“Yeah, don’t. Not the image I want to have floating around in my head.” I ran my fingers through her blonde hair. “We were fucking amazing.”

  “Yeah, we were.”

  “Still can be,” I said.

“So, what’s your plan B?” she asked. “Even back in college, you said a person should always have a backup plan. So, what’s yours?”

The conversation was about to head south, but I saw no other direction for it to go. “The problem that I have is I know it can always be like this.” I rested my hand on her lower back. “But I also know it’s not what you want. I’ll focus on football. Win another title.”

Madison looked away. If I was wrong, she didn’t say so. Fucking love someone and they walk out on you. On the football field, I’d been hit by some of the largest men on the planet. But no pain they dished out could ever come close to the pain that crushed my soul when Madison walked away from you. And she was doing it again. Only this time, I was prepared.

“I should get going,” she said. “I blocked off most of the morning, but I need to meet with Gus later on.”

“We can leave now,” I said.

She shook her head. “I’ll take an Uber. You do what you need to do. Get some real sleep. You tossed and turned all night.”

  Yeah, I wondered why.

Madison kissed me and then moved from the bed. “I don’t know what happens now, Bryce.” She dressed under my watchful eyes. I couldn’t help but notice and remembered she had no panties.

I didn’t know what happened next either. Or maybe I did. I watched her leave, and when she looked back at me before closing the door, I saw the end. My plan had obviously failed. I stared at my cell phone that I had leaned against the TV last night. The flash had been turned off, but the photo app had been turned on. My guess was that it had snapped about 200 pictures. But all I needed was one clear image.

With the taste of Madison still on my lips, the scent of her body on my skin, I rolled from bed and went to the shower, trying to avoid the phone by the be
d. One call, that was all. The reporter would tell me how and where to send the picture—or pictures. The tabloid would take care of the rest.

I stayed in the shower until the water turned cool. I brushed my teeth and then shaved. I stared at the man in the mirror, unsure if I liked the man staring back. Madison had returned to manage the Hurricanes and be my boss. Neither of these things I cared for.

I grabbed my wallet out of my pants and removed the business card I couldn’t quite get out of my mind. Tabitha Roberts, People Quest Magazine, the premier tabloid magazine in the country. Tabitha and I had a run-in two seasons ago outside a Miami nightclub. She claimed another player had provided her some dirt on me, stating I was at the club with a famous stripper. She was there to get the scoop. Finding nothing, she asked if I would have dinner with her the following evening. I said yes, hoping she’d back off. No, I wasn’t with a famous stripper, but I knew someday I would need a favor. Time to cash in.

I dialed her number, and on the third ring, someone answered. “This is, Carly,” the voice said.

Unsure I really wanted to do what I thought necessary, I hesitated.

  “Hello?” Carly said.

“Yeah, is Tabitha around?” I asked.

“Just a moment, she’s on another line. Please hold. Can I ask who’s calling?”

Hell no. “A friend,” I said.

Carly placed me on hold. Fuck. I looked through the pictures on my phone. Madison and I going at it. She had a beautiful ass, a beautiful face, and a beautiful personality.

“This is Tabitha,” the voice said.

  CHAPTER NINE

  Madison

“Did anyone see you with him?” Julie asked. She whispered something to her dog and then returned to the phone. “Anyone take pictures?”

“Everything’s fine,” I assured her. “Some people at dinner took pictures, but I don’t think anyone noticed that we went upstairs. I’m not worried about anyone finding out. I trust Bryce and think he did everything he could to make sure it looked business-like.”

“Yeah, maybe that’s why he changed plans. Throw nosey people off the trail.”

She was waiting for me to ask about her date. “You never said who you went to the restaurant with,” I said.

I listened for several minutes about her date, but only heard blah blah blah. Bryce had been on my mind from the time I left the hotel to the time I got home, showered, and pulled into work. One way or another, we could make this work. He wouldn’t play for the Hurricanes forever. I wanted to see him again. It didn’t matter when, but it did need to be private.

  “Madison?”

  “I’m here.”

  “Bryce?”

“Of course. But I don’t want to lose the Hurricanes. I don’t want to lose what I’ve worked toward all my life.” Not seeing him was going to be as difficult as trying to see him in private.

“Look, just keep it G-rated in public. Maybe be seen with other players so nobody asks questions. Just a boss doing her thing.” She chastised her dog again. “I think Budweiser needs to go out and pee.” Her father had given her a bulldog two years ago for her birthday. The dog had been a rescue from the local humane society. The previous owner had named him after his favorite beer. She said the dog pissed more than an eighty-year-old man.

We ended the call, and I sat the phone on my desk when someone knocked on my door.

May had the day off to take care of personal business. Gus had called, canceling our meeting so he could spend some time down at the training facility during workouts. “Come in.”

She was one of those people whose face could turn your day to shit in a heartbeat. “Madison,” Clarissa said as she opened the door.

I’d heard some of the players talk about the way Clarissa dressed. Her mini-skirts and see-through blouses. Her heels and skimpy dresses. Rumor had it that several of the players had “tapped” her ass. “Morning, Clarissa.”

“Gus wanted me to drop off some paperwork for you to sign. He also sent a list of players whose contracts need to be reviewed.” She placed the paperwork on my desk and stared. “It’s not right,” she said. “Gus deserved one more year. If it wasn’t for your father, he’d still be in that seat.”

She was absolutely right. It was my father’s fault I was sitting in the boss’ chair. He’d built the team from the ground up. He’d forked over the money for an expansion team. He had agreed to pay half the cost of building the stadium, a cost usually left to the community. My family’s money had brought the Hurricanes to Orlando. “Are you worried about Gus’ job or your own,” I asked. “Because I can assure you Gus’ job will always be safe.” I left it at that. She could wonder about reading between the lines. My phone buzzed, and we both looked at the name on the screen… Bryce. “Have a good afternoon, Clarissa.”

I picked up the phone and read the text.

  -Missing you, Mads.

Clarissa’s visit disappeared from my mind. I typed out a reply.

Thanks again for the wonderful night and morning.

  It was a pleasure, Mads.

I moved my thumbs over the keys and hesitated. We’d already crossed the line and apparently had been able to keep things to ourselves.

I’m looking forward to another meeting. A smiley face appeared on the screen. I followed it up with, How about tonight?

-Remember our favorite place? he asked.

Pick you up at seven? I replied.

-Wow, aren’t I supposed to ask you that?

Yeah, but I’m your boss, remember?

I waited and waited for a reply, knowing that reminding him I was his boss was a mistake. I started to apologize, but then he replied.

Then dinner will be on you!

Incoming call, Mads. See you tonight.

I waited for hearts to appear, but that was the end of the conversation.

The paperwork on my desk was a mix of player contracts and community requests for assistance. I shoved the contracts aside and began flipping through the requests.

The local animal shelter wanted to know if they could bring a slew of dogs to a regular-season game and walk them out onto the field at half-time. They were hoping people in the crowd would adopt one of the pets following the games. I wrote approved across the top. Another request asked they could purchase political ads in the regular season programs. I wrote denied across the top. I approved the remaining six requests, all of them adding to the betterment of the Orlando community.

“Sup, Madison,” RJ said and entered my office. I glanced through the window to see a dozen or so players on the practice field.

“It’s voluntary workouts, remember? Mandatory doesn’t start until next week.” He pompously took a seat in one of the leather chairs across from me. “You looking at contracts?”

“After the community stuff.” I turned the papers face down to avoid his wondering eyes.

“You know Bryce isn’t the only one to not sign the no fraternizing with employee agreement?” He leaned forward, his small brown eyes burrowing into me.

  “Why’re you here, RJ?”

“Thinking you and I should have dinner like you and your boy Bryce did last night.”

The smugness on his face made me want to throat punch him. “Yeah? How would your fiancee feel about the two of us having dinner?” The cocky sneer on his face confirmed he was a lying snake just as Bryce had warned. “Dinner with Bryce was strictly business. We talked contracts. Not that it is any of your business.”

“Bryce signed a deal last year. There was no need to talk contracts.

“He’s won a title; you haven’t,” I said. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I have work to do.”

“I wouldn’t tell a soul,” he said. “Just you and me.”

“I’m sure there’s some ethical issue you’re creating by hitting on your boss,” I said. “My answer is, and always will be, no. Besides, what would your fiancée think about us having an intimate dinner together, RJ?”

His brow quirked, and the co
cky bastard knew I’d caught him in a lie.

“That’s right. I know you lied through your teeth. Proceed with caution, RJ. I’m not into playing childish games.”

“Message loud and clear, Madison. But just remember, you’ll change your mind eventually,” he said and stood. He left the office with as much ego as he had entered with. How the hell had he known Bryce and I had dinner last night?

I waited a few minutes and then peeked out my door, feeling foolish that I had to sneak around my own office. Making my way down the hall toward Gus’ office, I stopped and listened to RJ and Clarissa flirt with each other. I also heard RJ ask her to dinner, and heard Clarissa accept. They would both have to be dealt with.

  ***

At home, I laid on the bed and stared at the ceiling. The fact of the matter was I had been given control of the team, though the trustees could renege at any moment. I had a 30-day probation period. No doubt they were waiting for a reason to change their minds. Legally, if at all possible. If I tried to change the fraternizing rule, they would shoot it down immediately and put me on the streets. Like Bryce, I needed a plan B when dealing with the trustees. Tomorrow, May and I would discuss plan B and Clarissa

I couldn’t help but wonder what Bryce had been up to since college. His on-field play spoke for itself. But very few people knew of or spoke of his personal life. And even though we’d been busy the previous night, he offered nothing. I needed to back off a bit, at least until I knew him better.

I showered, threw on shorts and a tee, and headed downstairs to wait, and to pull out my college scrapbook. Inside the scrapbook, a dozen letters Bryce had sent me after I walked away. I opened the last letter he sent.

  Mads,

I signed an eight-figure contract today. One of the largest contracts ever signed by a rookie quarterback. Damn, it felt good. I also signed a contract for a house in the same neighborhood as our coach. I think he wants to keep an eye on me. And remember that car I always talked about buying? Paid cash for it today as well. Everything’s going to plan. Well, almost everything. Wish you were part of all this. I gotta tell you, I’m still disappointed. We had all these pie in the sky dreams. Now only one of us is following those dreams. This is it, Mads. Last letter. Hoping you actually reply to this one since you won’t answer your phone.
