Five of Clubs (War and Suits Book 4)

The makeshift sled finally came to a stop in the small village of Grimbay. I looked behind us, and there was no sign of The Joker. It gave us a head start, but I knew we had to keep moving. We were in the Diamond Kingdom, a place full of magic. There was bound to be someone who would protect us or, at least, help us protect ourselves. Maybe they would be able to send us both home. A small inn stood near the edge of the village with the name, The Magician's Beard. There were no lights on, but I knocked on the door anyway.
“The Diamonds can magic us home,” I said.
Journey just nodded. Her arms and legs were both badly cut by the glass, and she was shivering since she was wearing only a thin nightdress. I put my arms around her to keep her warm. I felt her snuggle into my body, and I felt glad I could protect her. She kissed me on the cheek. A chaste kiss, the way a sister might kiss a brother.
“Thank you, Ash. You are the first person I’ve ever known who actually cares about me. I don’t know how I can ever repay you.”
“We have a long way to go yet,” I replied, “but you can repay me by doing what you said you’d do. Change the tradition of The Jacks. Do it for you, and do it for future generations of royals.”
She looked at me then and her eyes filled with tears. “I will.”
A soft smile appeared on her lips. I had never seen her look so beautiful.
