I scratched my waves then removed my feet from the desk. Hated to lie, but in this case, I had to. Things had been going well for us. The last thing I wanted was for Lesa to feel some kind of way about Sylvia. Lesa knew a lot about our past. Basically, I told her everything from how things got started to how they ended. When I mentioned my meeting with Sylvia, Lesa gave me her approval.

“I got home a little after midnight,” I said. “I saw your text messages a few hours ago, but my phone had been turned off since my business meeting earlier. I forgot to turn it back on. Bar Louie was crowded and it took a long time before we got service. Plus, Sylvia kept running her mouth about things that don’t really matter much anymore. We’re on the same page now, and I want to thank you for not having a problem with me meeting her.”

Lesa didn’t reply. She just stood in all of her sexiness, gazing at me. She was thirty-nine, seven years younger than I was. Her hair was swept into a long ponytail that revealed her round face and deep-set, mysterious eyes. While in her gray silk robe, I watched as she strutted around my desk to sit on my lap. Her arms fell on my shoulders and she leaned in for a juicy kiss. I hoped the taste of Sylvia’s pussy wasn’t still stirring in my mouth.

“Mmmm,” she moaned then backed away and licked her full lips. “That’s what I was missing this morning. Breakfast is almost done, so I expect for you to join me in about fifteen more minutes. That’s unless you have something else in mind.”

She started to undo the buttons on my pajama shirt. I was exhausted from fucking Sylvia; no question she wore me out. I didn’t have much energy to tackle Lesa right now, so I reached for her hand, kissing the back of it.

“I’m working on finalizing an important case next week. Let me get a few things done, and then I’ll meet you in the kitchen for breakfast. I’ll tell you what’s on my mind later tonight.”

She kissed my cheek then smiled. “Okay, Mr. Busy Man. Don’t let breakfast get cold, and I can’t wait for tonight. Cherry and I have something real exciting waiting for you.”

Cherry was the nickname she’d given her pussy. Any other time I’d be eager to see what was waiting. Today I wanted to pass.

She removed her arms from my shoulders then stood. As she made her way to the door, I felt guilty. I hoped that Sylvia and I would be able to keep our distance. While my feelings were not the same for her, I had to admit that sex between us always stirred up something inside of me.

Twenty minutes later, I was at the kitchen table eating breakfast with Lesa. Four pancakes were stacked high on my plate, along with two sausages and a side of cheese eggs. Diced potatoes with onions were in a bowl, and a tall glass of orange juice was in my hand. I lifted the glass, but didn’t tilt it to my lips because Lesa switched our conversation to Sylvia.

“For whatever reason, I didn’t think she’d be that pretty. I also didn’t think she’d be that fat, and I thought she’d be some kind of ghetto queen with false lashes and a head full of weave.”

“Fat? She weighs about one-seventy, and in no way is she fat. And why would you think that she’s a ghetto queen? Ghetto queens aren’t my type.”

“Maybe not a ghetto queen to you, but for a woman to stoop as low as she did with her best friend, and to rush into a courtroom and throw a tantrum, it surely sounds like a ghetto queen to me. As for the weight thing, one-seventy is kind of up there, but I don’t believe she weighs that. More like two hundred plus.”

These kinds of attacks irritated me. I didn’t want to spend my time with Lesa defending Sylvia, but she was saying things that weren’t true.

“I don’t know exactly how much she weighs, but most men appreciate how she looks. There is no question that we had some trust issues back then. She was upset, and the courtroom was where she’d found me. I don’t see what that has to do with a person being ghetto.”

The truth: I was furious with Sylvia that day. She clowned in the courtroom, and her actions caused me to pull away from our relationship.

Lesa bit into a piece of bacon while eyeing me from across the table. I lowered my head to cut into my pancakes.

“It sounds like you’re defending her. Why would you defend such a foolish act, and also defend a woman who had sex with one of your friends? What kind of woman stoops that low and fucks your friend?”

In that moment, I realized that I had been running my mouth too much. Sometimes, being open about past relationships wasn’t such a good thing.

“I’m not defending her, and she’s free to have sex with whomever she wishes. All I’m saying is she’s not a ghetto queen, as you say. I’m more so defending myself because I don’t date women of that caliber.”

She was annoying the hell out of me without even knowing it. Especially when she shrugged then bit into another piece of bacon. Her gaze made me uncomfortable. It was as if she could read me. As if she could visualize my dick sliding in and out of Sylvia last night. As if she felt my hands massaging Sylvia’s thick breasts and my lips placing delicate pecks against her thighs and pussy. Maybe Lesa had heard the way Sylvia screamed my name and told me how much she still loved me after each orgasm. Lesa’s look said she was on to something.

“So, what did she say?” Lesa asked. “You never told me how the conversation went last night.”

I had to quickly rid myself of the guilty look that was taking over. Instead of sitting slumped in the chair, I sat up straight. I looked across the table at Lesa with wide eyes then cleared my throat.

“I didn’t think it was necessary for me to provide specifics, but I did tell you that we are now on the same page. I told her that I am in love, and that you and I will be getting married soon. She mentioned her new job and expressed how excited she is to be back in St. Louis. That was pretty much it.”

  “Where is her new job?”

I surely didn’t want to answer this, but Lesa would find out sooner or later. “At my firm.”

Her brows shot up. “Your firm? Is she working for you again?”

“No. She’s working for Crissy Duncan.”

  “Oh. I see.”

The direction of Lesa’s eyes shifted toward the window. She gazed outside, as if she were in deep thought. I hated that she felt uncomfortable about all of this. I had to assure her that Sylvia wouldn’t be a problem.

“You’ve never questioned me like this before. Wha—”

She cut me off and snapped. “And I can’t recall a time when I wasn’t able to reach you. It was the wrong time to have your phone off, and I’m still waiting for you to reply to my text messages.”

“I apologize for the phone incident, but you already know that there have been plenty of times when I’ve had to turn that thing off. It’s a distraction in the courtroom, and I don’t have it on when I’m in meetings. I simply forgot that it was off. Regardless, I want to be clear about one thing. It is over between Sylvia and me. There is nothing for you to worry about. After our dinner last night, I doubt that I’ll be hearing from her again. We both agreed to go our separate ways. She knows where I stand; I know where she stands. The question is, do you know where you stand? I hope so.”

Lesa’s eyes shifted back to me. “I am well aware of where I stand. And as long as you know, that’s all that matters.”

She lifted her glass of orange juice, slightly tilting it as if we were toasting. Her eyes searched deeper into mine as she sipped from the glass, and, unfortunately for me, I could sense that she saw straight through my bullshit. In order for me to make her feel number one again, I had some major work to do.

Later that night, I had just wrapped up a phone conversation with Jaylin, who reached out to me about a legal matter that could cost him a fortune. I gave him some advice, and it wasn’t long before our conversation led to what had happened between him and Sylvia. I hated to inquire, but I backed off of the conversation when he seemed as if he didn’t want to share any info. There was no question that I was jealous. I didn’t want either of them to know how pissed I really was.

  For no
w, I focused on the important things like my woman. Lesa had returned from a fashion show that she had been planning for months. Per our phone conversation earlier, she was hyped about the turnout, and she couldn’t wait to get home to tell me all about it. As she busted through the double doors to our bedroom, I lay in bed, rocking nothing but my chocolate skin. A trail of pink and red rose petals made a pathway to the bed, soothing music echoed in the background, the fireplace was lit, and a bottle of chilled champagne was on the nightstand for us to celebrate her success. I had also gotten her a gift that was wrapped in gold shimmery paper and topped with a big white bow. A wide smile appeared as she stepped farther into the room, observing her surroundings.

“I thought you’d never get here,” I said with a superhard dick on display.

She stepped out of her heels then crawled her way up to me from the edge of the bed. Our tongues danced for a while before I lifted her fitted dress, exposing her nakedness. She was fit in every possible way. Had just enough curves to excite me, and I didn’t mind that her breasts were much smaller than Sylvia’s.

“I love it when you lay your hands on me,” she whispered then laid her hands on me. Unfortunately, my dick had backed down from the excitement, leaving me hanging.

“What’s wrong?” Lesa said while stroking my limp meat. “From what I saw at the door, you were good to go.”

To say I was embarrassed was an understatement. This had never happened to me before. I touched myself to see if that would help me rise to the occasion, but it didn’t do much good. Lesa frowned. Disappointment washed across her face. I rolled on top of her, hoping that if I brushed my dick against her wet slit, it would help. It didn’t.

“I . . . I don’t know what to say. Maybe I need to go see my doctor.”

“Maybe so. Let me see what I can do about this little problem.”

This time, Lesa lay on top of me. She eased down low, and then wiggled my dick with her hand. Her warm mouth covered it, and she tried to suck it in to the back of her throat. It didn’t budge. I closed my eyes, thinking about having sex with her and about what had transpired between Sylvia and me last night. The thoughts may have increased my package a little, but not by much. Lesa tightened her jaws, but there still wasn’t much to swallow. I kept my eyes closed, just to prevent myself from looking into hers.

“You may need that doctor after all,” she said, giving up. She moved next to me in bed, turning her back toward me. “Good night,” she said. “Maybe next time.”

I moved in close to her, wrapping my arms around her waist.

  “I’m sorry,” I whispered.

She didn’t reply. We both lay silent. My thoughts had been all over the place tonight, and I should’ve known better than to try to kick up something in the bedroom with Lesa. I couldn’t stop thinking about Sylvia having sex with Jaylin. I felt more betrayed by her than I did by him. She shouldn’t have gone there. I kept thinking about the impact she would have on my relationship with Lesa, and the guilt from having sex with Sylvia was eating me alive. Hopefully, I’d feel better in another day or two, but, for now, any attempts to get my dick hard again failed.

I kissed Lesa’s cheek then squeezed her tightly in my arms.

“I don’t know what’s wrong, baby, but I will absolutely find out something from my doctor. You aren’t upset with me, are you?”

Lesa shrugged but didn’t bother to reply. I took that as a definite hell, yes. It was clear as ever that she was mad as hell.

  CHAPTER 4

  SYLVIA

Talk about somebody doing the happy dance—that would be me. I had been on a serious high ever since Jonathan left my place early Saturday morning. I hadn’t heard from him, but we both agreed to take this one day at a time. He seemed to really care about Lesa, and even though I didn’t want to interfere, I had to.

Jonathan was, and had always been, my kind of man. He was the one I intended to spend my life with, and I couldn’t respect his relationship with another woman. Especially one he had only known for a couple of years. We had a long history together, and our connection couldn’t be ignored. I know it sounded cruel, but what kind of woman didn’t fight for what she wanted?

My first day at work was an exciting one. It had been a long time since I stepped foot into the law offices of Duncan, Taylor & Bradford. I was glad to be back. Never in my wildest dreams did I think Crissy and I would be working together. Never did I think she would ultimately become my best friend. We’d kept in touch over the years, and she visited me on numerous occasions in Atlanta, where I worked for her uncle. I told her that our friendship meant the world to me. I would do everything possible not to let our closeness interfere with work.

I sat in her office, dressed in a hot-pink skirt that showed off my chocolate smooth legs. My multicolored blouse was cut low, revealing a small portion of my cleavage. A gold belt was wrapped around my waist, matching my high heels and accessories. With my hair parted down the middle and hanging a few inches past my shoulders, I felt like a million bucks. Crissy complimented my look as she sat behind her desk, sliding lip gloss against her lips. After the plastic surgery, her lips were fuller, breasts were bigger, and ass was that of a Kardashian. Her super-long blond hair was beautiful, though, and her blue eyes were enough to steal any man’s heart.

“And even though you look fabulous today,” she said, “we can’t let our friendship interfere, so get out of here and get back to work. I have so much for you to do, and I couldn’t wait to fire that lazy trick who was getting paid for nothing. So, glad you’re back, and don’t forget to let me know what time you want to schedule your lunch for. I’ll be in and out all day. You already know how to reach me.”

“I do. I’ll let you know about lunch. As for the trick thing, why would you talk about that woman like that? She seemed nice whenever I called here. You should be ashamed of yourself for speaking so ill of her.”

Crissy smacked her lips together. “Honey, calling her a trick is putting it mildly. I could call her much more than that, but I won’t. She had the hots for Mr. Jonathan Taylor, and I’m sure you already know that’s a no-no around here.”

“Yes, it is, and you did the right thing by firing her. How dare that trick try to go there with my man?”

We laughed. She closed her purse then crossed her legs. “So. Have you heard from him since you’ve been back?”

“Yes, I have, but now isn’t the time or place to discuss this. I’m here to work. We can chat later.”

Crissy giggled then waved her hands in the air as if she’d won the lottery. She then calmed herself and leaned closer to whisper. “Oh my God. You’re fucking him again, aren’t you? Are you really screwing him again already?”

I rolled my eyes at her. “No, I’m not screwing him again. He’s engaged, and I refuse to interfere.”

She rolled her eyes too. “Whatever. That hussy he’s engaged to means nothing to him. You, my dear, are the love of his life. You’d better jump on it before it’s too late.”

I couldn’t agree with her more, but I didn’t want to put my business regarding me and Jonathan out there just yet. Crissy hurried out of the chair and rushed to the door. After she closed it, she returned to her chair.

“Just so you know, I’m the boss. And the boss can always tell when employees are being untruthful. From that bright smile on your face, I can tell that you may have done more than just talk to him. So, let’s start this over again. I want all of the details, quick, quick, quick.”

I kept smiling and shook my head. Crissy was too much. “Look, Miss Boss Lady. I’m not going to sit here and spend the next hour or so gossiping with you. I came here to work, and I want to earn every bit of that fifty-five thousand dollars you’re paying me a year.”

“Fifty-five!” she shouted. “No, no, sweetheart. I said forty-five and you agreed to it.”

“Never. I’m worth so much more than that, and we both determined that fifty-five would do the trick. Remember? ’Cause if you don’t, you alr
eady know what’s up.”

Crissy laughed. “You’re right. At fifty-five thousand, we don’t have time to talk. Go get some work done and stay out of Mr. Taylor’s way.”

“Will do,” I said then left her office.

Fifteen minutes later, as I was straightening things on my desk, Crissy exited her office. She informed me that she was leaving for the day.

“Be careful and keep your phone on just in case I need you,” I said.

She waved good-bye as she trotted away, looking like a dolled-up hooker. Her skirt was very short, breasts looked as if they were about to break away from the tight silk blouse she wore, and her heels were at least five or six inches. She was good at what she did, though, and many of her clients praised her for getting the job done.

By noon, my desk was organized and open for business. There were so many new faces around. I had only introduced myself to Mr. Brennan Bradford’s secretary and to one of the men in the mailroom. The human resources director, Pauline, stopped by to say hello. Other than that, I kept to myself. Getting involved with so many people in the workplace wouldn’t benefit me at all. I learned that from the past, so I got busy on some of the work Crissy had left for me to do.

Jonathan, of course, was on my mind. I surely thought that, by now, he’d stop by to say hello. He hadn’t, and I felt disappointed. I figured he was busy, but damn. All it took was five measly minutes to come this way and say hello. A phone call wouldn’t hurt either, but I hadn’t gotten one of those either. To say I was a little perturbed would be putting it mildly, and after another hour or so had passed by, I finally decided to make my way across the building and to his office.

As I neared it, I saw his secretary. She was an older white woman with gray long hair and black-framed glasses. Kind of reminded me of Mrs. Doubtfire. I laughed to myself, thinking about my disagreements with Jonathan in the past, when I demanded that he didn’t hire a young, cute secretary after I stopped working for him. It was good to see that he was continuing to do the right thing.
