Wed To A Stranger?

by Jule McBride

Fritzi glanced at her parents, who were scrutinizing every inch of Malcolm. Then she looked at her husband again and stepped into his embrace.

“Oh, Nathan,” she whispered, wiping the tears from her cheeks. “You helped them vanish. You saved their lives.”

  Nathan nodded. “Yeah, I did.”

Fritzi could only lift a hand to his cheek. “All along, I felt like they were okay, somehow. And it was you who was keeping them safe.” She lifted her chin and kissed him then—ever so tenderly brushing her lips across his. “Don’t you know how much I love you? And how much I trust you?”

Nathan leaned back a fraction, gazing into her eyes as if she were nothing less than a walking miracle. “But why?” he whispered.

“Because I know who you really are,” she whispered back.

That seemed to surprise him. “Who?”

  “My husband.”

Nathan stared at her a long moment. They were in their element—in a garden, in the sunshine, on a lovely spring day. “You’re so right,” he said. “That’s exactly who I am.”

And then he smiled. Angling his head downward, he kissed her hard and deep, as if to say he’d found himself in her. And that being her husband and the father of her children was the only identity he’d ever need.
