In that moment Jack understood what his father had suffered that day so long ago. A ship and his crew were lost – his life. “Not this time,” Jack whispered to himself. “Not now.”
The lanterns swayed. Welcome back.
Others stumbled up behind Argus, a dozen or more holding lanterns that flickered like fireflies through the early dawn. Kaitlin and Mercedes seemed mesmerized by the lights, and after a moment the two sisters turned to each other. A fading breeze tickled their faces, like angel wings fluttering, and as icy waves thundered against the boat’s smooth hull, a shooting star burned a fiery path towards home.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I say a heart-felt thank you to the many who provided their advice and support in the crafting of this novel. First, Jayne Leong, who insisted that I stop talking and start writing. Also, Sheilagh Morrison, whose boundless enthusiasm was a constant source of energy throughout the many drafts of my manuscript. There were my perfect readers: Carolyn Stokes, Clarissa Dicks and Julia Wyeth, all of whom gave their time and most importantly, their honesty, in helping to shape my story. As well, psychologist Leigh Minter, whose expertise on Colombia’s reclusive U’wa tribe provided the genesis for plot. I owe a debt of gratitude to the dedicated staff at Breakwater Books and especially to my editor Annamarie Beckel. I would also like to thank someone who cannot be named here, a spook who opened a door for me to the murky world of intelligence. You know who you are, my friend. Finally, to Pavel Palazchenko, the omnipresent Cold War interpreter for ex-Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev, who graciously cleared the way on an airport tarmac for a few inspirational moments with “the boss.”
