Areas where seniors need to be educated and remain aware are:

  · Phishing: these are online scams that try to convince you they are trusted, legitimate companies. They often take the form of official bank notices or government forms and documents. They look like the real thing but actually end up tricking the recipient into disclosing personal information.

  · Lack of computer skills: seniors tend to be less familiar with operating a computer, so they need to either learn to equip their computers with firewall- and antivirus-protection or else ask someone they trust to set up their security for them.

  · Lack of internet skills: computer skills and internet skills are two different things. Where computer skills refer to the actual technology of the machine, internet skills involve understanding human nature and how people can use the internet to exploit others. Exposure to the internet will teach seniors when to click and when not to click, how to recognize scams, and the potential for criminal targeting.

  · Seniors are usually more trusting and may believe a notice sent out to them stating that there is a problem with one of their accounts. Be very leery of notices asking for personal information. Contact your account institutions directly regarding the validity of such notices.

  · Emails from unfamiliar sources should be deleted immediately. Opening the wrong emails can introduce viruses, which can then spread and compromise your computer and identity.

  · Advanced Fee Letter Fraud (Nigerian or West African letters): these are email scams that offer you a considerable amount of money to help someone transfer a huge sum of money. They state that they can’t get the money out of a certain country and offer to share the money with you if you let them use your bank account to transfer the money. Once you provide them with your bank account number, they can access the account and withdraw your money.

  · Malicious Software: Viruses, worms, Trojan horse programs, spyware, and adware are a real threat and can infect your computer simply by clicking on fraudulent emails. Be careful not to open emails from unfamiliar sources. Remember: if something looks too good to be true, it probably is.

The internet with its infinite possibilities is an incredible achievement of mankind. It can be a source of immeasurable benefit, but it can also be an avenue for great harm. Protection from such harm can only be achieved through education of its perils and through diligent monitoring. Discovery has never been easier. Disaster can be just as easy if you aren’t careful. Whether riding your bike down a busy city street for the first time or cruising around the internet in search of knowledge, caution must be foremost in your mind.

This chapter included basic safety rules that many are already taking precautions against. There is one particular feature on Facebook that I am dubious about and that is the ability to “check in” at certain locations. People are using this feature to let their friends know they are at a restaurant, or the mall, the swimming pool, etc., but they are also letting potential stalkers and criminals know as well. This feature essentially gives away your exact GPS location. My GPS on my iPhone is turned on only for maps and weather. Why does the entire world need to know where you are located?

  Epilogue

This book has only been a small sample guiding you through the brutality of a killer’s mind. Hundreds of other different types of killers can be found throughout history. These combined true stories can bring a better understanding to the diverted nature of a human being.

As you may have noticed, committing a murder is more complicated than the mere act. Many of the reasons that drive a person to kill someone else can be traced as far back as to the childhood of that person. Troubled childhoods, verbal abuse, but mostly sexual abuse, are all factors that contribute into the making of a killer. Although the motives of a killer are not always logical, some do not understand the gravity of their actions, even after they are put away.

In the stories chosen for this book, often the families of the victims were able to have some kind of closure, even though they still lost their loved ones. Others were not so lucky. Not only did the murderers take the lives of their loved ones, they also inflicted pain and misery to their families and friends.

As the final words in this book are written, we hope that it will make a good contribution and reference to the criminal history of mankind, mainly of modern killers who depend on today’s technology to commit crimes.
