  Chapter 1

  Most people let their forsythia go wild, a leggy aureate border blaze to welcome spring, but Dominick’s mother had trimmed and trained hers so that it was a deep golden globe of late-April blossoms. It was weirdly unnatural, a burning bush in the slanting crystal clear afternoon sunlight of her otherwise still drab garden. Why did he take it so personally?

  Dominick was standing at the bay window of his mother’s chilly living room, looking out. Behind him sheets covered all the upholstered furniture. The air smelled of undisturbed stillness. Although his mother had lived here in her gated Virginia redoubt for over thirty years, it had never been Dominick’s home. No effort had ever been made to make him feel welcome there. On the rare occasions when he had found it necessary to stay over, she had invariably referred to him as a freeloader. It was her house and hers alone. In all its ten rooms there had been room for only her, and her peculiar stark presence was reflected everywhere. Maybe that was what irritated him about the forsythia bush—it was another one of her strange signatures. Even dead she wouldn’t go away.

  The restaurant was too fancy by half, and the food was accordingly mediocre. Dominick ate alone in silence. He might be temporarily sleeping at his mother’s house, but he was not living there, much less eating there. He had been eating only in restaurants of late. He always brought something to read and asked for a table with suitable lighting. Tonight it was an Audubon magazine he had picked up out of the pile of mail at his mother’s. It was the issue with their annual bird photo awards. He studied the technical info on the cameras, lenses, settings, and film used in each photo. He was pleased to see that not one of the many award-winning photos had been shot digitally. He barely noticed the other diners. At least they all were appropriately dressed. Maybe that was what he was paying for, not this tasteless piece of veal slathered in amateur sauce.

  There had been a time when Alexandria was more its genteel self and less like everywhere else. Now he could be almost anywhere in America where the well-off ate. Time, the great homogenizer. He could still be in New York or back on Tavernier Key. Over the years, Dominick’s need to be someplace else had been increasingly challenged by places becoming more alike. He had almost given up. He noted the places where the birds had been photographed, places out on the edge—Waimea, Montana, Matagorda, the Yucatan—places he had yet to get to. Maybe people there would be different, different from him. The birds were different. As soon as he could settle his mother’s affairs, get her house on the market, and fulfill his only-child obligations, he would be out of here, gone to one of those places or someplace similarly distant. Marjorie, for all her lack of maternal valence, had been the only thing that held him in any inner orbit.

  Dominick put off going back to the house as long as he could. It was Friday night, and a band was playing in the bar attached to the restaurant. He stopped in for a nightcap. The music didn’t interest him—all music was just noise to Dominick—but he could sit at the bar, sip his Hennessy, and watch the women. It was a different crowd than in the restaurant—young urban professionals gearing up for an expansive weekend. The erratic lighting in the bar made watching more interesting; nothing and no one could hold your attention for long. The women were all surprisingly young and fresh and athletic. The young men, subdued by the female flash, became background. Everyone was at least twenty years younger than Dominick. No one aside from the barman even saw him sitting there at the end of the bar, looking like somebody’s father. The Hennessy begged for its companion cigar, and Dominick left to fire up a Romeo y Julieta Churchill in the parking lot.

  After that he drove a while, enjoying his cigar, searching for back roads he remembered, which now were all commercial strips interspersed with condominiums. He stopped at a bar in Old Town that was still in the place he remembered it and had a few more drinks beneath the protective glare of multiple flat screen TVs tuned to muted sports channels. Again no one noticed him, so he headed home feeling secure. Not even the familiar wave from the guard at the compound’s gate irked him; he would be gone soon.

  The house lots inside the compound were large, and the roads curved comfortably among them. America Way led to Chesapeake, then a soft right onto Potomac. There were no other cars. The posted speed limit was twenty-five, but Dominick went even slower. There were always deer out at this time of night. He was in no hurry. All of his mother’s lot was hidden from the road behind an extended evergreen hedge, and the long gravel driveway turned among trees so that the house itself was hidden until you came upon it. Two deer—a doe and her fawn—stood in the driveway, frozen in his headlights. He stopped. The mother deer gave him an arrogant stare, as if he were the trespasser. The freeloader. Nonchalantly—acting as if they didn’t care that he could annihilate them if he so wished just by moving his right foot from one pedal to another—they strolled off into the darkness.

  There was an unknown car parked in the driveway in front of the two-car garage, an old-model Chevy with New York plates. There were lights on in the house. Dominick turned off his headlights as he drifted up beside the dingy Chevrolet. Only once before, while house-sitting a place up in Maine, had he had to deal with burglars. That time it hadn’t turned out too well. If he had one of those cell phones now, he could call 911. Then he wondered how this car had gotten past the guard at the gate. Dominick was unarmed—but trying to be a tough guy was what had gotten him in trouble the last time. The front door was locked, so he used his key.

  It seemed like all the lights in the house were on. Dominick stood in the foyer, looking from room to room and up the staircase. There wasn’t a sound. The house was still cold. He didn’t say hello. Then from the kitchen came the noise of a refrigerator door closing. He very quietly shut the front door behind him and moved stealthily, like some burglar himself, down the hallway beside the staircase toward the back of the house and the swinging door to the kitchen. He pulled the door toward him, rather than push it open, and peeked through the crack it made. There was no one at the kitchen table or in the passage to the dining room. He slowly pulled the door further open to view the rest of the room.

here was just one person there, standing with her back to him at the counter beside the sink. The shape inside her tight jeans gave her gender away. The jeans were tucked into chocolate-brown cowboy boots. She was wearing a sheepskin jacket with its raw-wool collar turned up. A mass of hair the color of wet and dry straw was piled haphazardly on the top of her head. Her head was bobbing from side to side, and Dominick could see the thin black wires coming down from her ears.

  Dominick looked around the rest of the kitchen, then behind him. There seemed to be no one else, so he pulled the door all the way open and walked in to stand beside the kitchen table. “Ahem,” he said, clearing his throat and feeling a bit foolish. There was no response. Then louder, “Hello. I say, what are you doing here?”

  When she whirled around, all Dominick saw was the large kitchen knife in her hand. “I am unarmed,” he said.

  With her free hand she pulled an earbud out of one ear. “What?” she said.

  “I said, who are you?” Dominick backed up, looking around for a handy weapon of his own. “And what are you doing here?” From a sideboard he picked up a tall wooden pepper grinder.

  “I’m making a salad. Who are you?”

  “Why, I … I live here.” It sounded like a lie even to him.

  “Well, there was nothing worth eating in this place. I had to go out and buy stuff, and what do mean you live here?”

  “Could you put down that knife, please?” Dominick asked.

  She looked at the knife in her hand then at him and the pepper grinder he was holding. She made a motion with her head for him to put that down. They became simultaneously unarmed. “You eaten?” she asked.

  Her name was Amanda, and Amanda knew who Dominick was. She had figured it out after getting a good look at him. “Marjorie said you were big, balding, and overweight,” she said as she set out plates for both of them. “Open that, would you?” She motioned to a bottle of Pinot Grigio on the counter. “And then I could see the resemblance in your eyes.”

  “My mother described me to you?”

  “Only once, really. I don’t remember exactly why. She was unhappy about something you had done and was bad-mouthing you.”

  Purely by house-sitter instinct Dominick opened the drawer where the corkscrew should be, and it was there. He had never used his mother’s kitchen, but she would be as predictable as every other American housewife when it came to kitchen-cabinet liturgy. As he opened the bottle of wine, he watched this Amanda. She was roughly his age but well preserved, full-bodied but still toned, no makeup or jewelry except for small silver hoops in her now pod-free ears. Her well-weathered face was late Lauren Bacall with a little more flesh on it. She was tossing a stir-fry in a wok atop the stove.

  “Do you know how to turn up the heat in here?” she asked, her back to him.

  “Sure, but it won’t help. She’s out of gas. I’ve called the fuel people, but they haven’t come yet.” Dominick opened the cabinet where the wine glasses ought to be and pulled out two. “How long was she in hospital?” he asked.

  “How would I know? I was away, and we weren’t talking much anyway. You’ll eat shrimp, won’t you? You’re not one of those vegans?” The way she said it made it sound like some Mongol tribe, in off the steppe.

  “Actually, I’ve already eaten, but that does smell good.”

  “Do you or don’t you eat shrimp? I had a West African boyfriend once who thought shrimp was the most disgusting food he had ever seen, and he loved eating tree slugs. No rice. None in the house. Found some egg noodles, though. This could be funky. Yes or no on the grub?”

  “Yes, I will try some.”

  Amanda took off her lambskin jacket and draped it over the back of a chair at the kitchen table. She had stuffed the earbuds into a pocket of the jacket without turning them off, and her disembodied garment now thrummed with a hidden beat. Dominick was pleased by the fullness of Amanda’s breasts pressing against her worn work shirt. “Can I be of any further assistance?” he asked, filling their wine glasses.

  “Bring the plates,” she said. “It’s ready. No point in messing up serving dishes.” She spooned some noodles onto the plates, then covered them with shrimp, snow peas, and broccoli from the wok. “Do you think you could hunt up some chopsticks?”

  Dominick searched but came up with just flatware. He doubted Marjorie ever owned chopsticks. They ate with forks. It was better than Dominick’s earlier dinner. “So, Amanda, you live in New York?”

  “What? No. Oh, yeah, the car. The Chevy’s plates. To me New York means the city, and I don’t live there. This could use some soy sauce, don’t you think? The noodles need help.”

  Dominick got up and found a bottle of soy sauce in a cupboard above the stove.

  “Where are you living now, Dominick?”

  “The past few months I’ve been down in Florida, the Keys.”

  “I guess you missed the funeral, too, such as it was.”

  “I only found out after the fact, from her lawyer.”

  “That Barnett guy?”

  “Yes. Do you know him? He seemed … well … distant.”

  “I don’t like him.”

  They ate in silence for a while. The soy sauce helped the noodles.

  “More shrimp?” she asked.

  “No, I’m sated. Thank you. So, where do you live, then?”

  “Upstate New York, Hudson Valley.”

  “And you have a key to this house and a pass through the gate?”

  “Why shouldn’t I? I’ve been here more often than you have. Give me that plate. Looks like you liked the shrimp alright.”

  “Are you staying here tonight?”

  Amanda stopped on her way to the sink and turned around. “Where the hell else am I going to stay?” she asked. “I just drove seven hours to get here.”

  “Well, I guess there are plenty of rooms,” Dominick said. How he hated this feeling of control slipping away, like driving on ice. “But I don’t understand what you are doing here.”

  Amanda put their dishes in the sink. It was clear she had no intention of washing them. Then she turned again and looked at Dominick. “I’m here for the same reason you are—Barnett called me.”

  They were staring at each other. For the first time Dominick noticed that Amanda’s eyes were green, a soft almost pastel green, wide-set and with very few lines around them, trustworthy eyes that now started to smile as she tilted her head to one side. “You have not the slightest idea who I am, do you?”

  “No. What do you mean? Why should I?” In his metaphor Dominick was now skidding off the edge of a glaciated highway.

  “Marjorie never told you about me, never mentioned me?”

  “No, never.”

  “Well, that beats all. That bitch.” Amanda had her hands on her hips and was shaking her head, a bemused look on her face. “And I had to know about you all these years—spoiled rotten Dominick, living off his rich daddy’s guilt trip, daddy’s only charity.”

  Dominick felt that he should say something, but he didn’t know what. This was why you should never talk to strangers.

  “She wanted me to hate you. She trained me to.”

  “Amanda, I haven’t the slightest idea what—”

  “And yet she never let you know that I even existed. Damn!” She slammed a hand onto the kitchen counter, and the big knife jumped off the counter and onto the floor.

  Dominick was on his feet. “Listen, Amanda, I think that …” He wasn’t sure what he thought.

  “I grew up with your phantom, and you were spared me.”

  “Yes, I was spared you, whatever that means, and I would like to continue that state. I think one of us should leave, now. I’m volunteering unless you would feel better …”

  “No, you’re staying. We got some catching up to do, like it or not. Now sit down.”

  Dominick remained standing. Amanda bent down and picked up the knife. Dominick pushed his chair aside and took several steps backwards. She noticed and la
ughed and put the knife back on the counter. “Okay, please sit down, Dominick, so we can have a little chat and maybe sort this out a bit. Hmm? How about pouring me another glass of wine?

  “You aren’t Marjorie’s only bastard, Dominick. Your Daddy-Warbucks father wasn’t her first mistake in that department. She had a practice run a year or two earlier in the minor leagues with my dad. I guess she was more ashamed of me because Dad was just a seaman. I grew up with his family, his sister and his dad mainly, in Vermont. I was almost ten before I figured out that none of the women in my dad’s life was my mom. A couple of years later I finally forced my dad to take me to meet her. She was staying at a fancy hotel in Boston. I don’t know where you would have been.”

  “I would have been in boarding school by then,” Dominick said.

  “After that I got to see her every now and then if she was up in New England. I thought she was cool, kind of an Auntie Mame. It made me different from the other kids, having a mother like that. At Christmas I’d always get something special from her. One year I got a raccoon-collar coat, the only genuine one in school.”

  “Your dad?”

  “He’s dead now. He passed on about the same time your father did. I called her when my dad died, and she mentioned that your old man had just croaked too. She took it as some sort of sign. I didn’t hear from her much after that, until the last year or so when she started losing it.”

  “This lawyer, Barnett?” Dominick asked. He didn’t really care about Barnett. He just wanted to change the topic. The less he knew about his mother the better. The bottle of Pinot Grigio was empty, and Amanda had taken out a cigarette, which she was now tapping on the kitchen table. “Go ahead and smoke it,” he said. “She’s not here to stop you.”

  “No, I can’t light up indoors,” she said. “It’s still her house. You don’t give a shit about Barnett. He’s got Marjorie’s will. I got him to admit that. He’s bollixed things up before for her, just to charge more billable hours. I say we fire him ASAP.”

  “We?” Dominick asked.
