“Damn it,” he muttered. Marcus sat at the table and came across some paperwork. He became infuriated again to find out that his son’s funeral didn’t take place too long ago.

“This bitch is sneaky as hell! She didn’t even let me go to his funeral? Ain’t that some shit. She for real about to get it.”

He looked around the house and concluded that there were only a couple other places that she could possibly be. Marcus was on a mission.

  Chapter 9:

“Dev, you should take a break off from work so you can have time to get yourself together after all that has happened. Yo boss won’t mind, right?” Makayla said as she poured Devyn a glass of orange juice.

Devyn groggily sipped on the cup of orange juice and nodded in agreement.

“I don’t think he would mind it, I mean, shit, my momma and baby are gone. I think there is leave for this so… I’ll look more into it. Hang on.”

Devyn then grabbed her phone and called up her job.

“Thanks for calling Mel’s Diner, this is Mel! How may I help you?”

  “Hey, it's Dev-”

“DEVYN! Are you alright? I’ve been worried about you. I heard about what happened with your son and mother, and I just wanted to make sure you were alright. I tried to get a hold of you and what not but I wasn’t able to. How can I help you?”

“I was just goin to call and ask if it was possible that I could have one week to kind of gather myself before I head back to work. Just unpaid leave, I just need some time to think is all.”

“That is perfectly fine, please take all the time you need, alright? Take care, Devyn.”

  Click.

Devyn looked at Makayla and nodded.

“Well that was definitely easier than I thought it was going to be, honestly.” She said as she placed down her phone and picked up the orange juice, sipping on it contently.

“Now you can focus on you, girl! This is good. Well, I’ma head out and run a few errands if that is okay with you?”

  Devyn nodded.

“I’ll clean up around here and probably go for a walk. Just text me, aight?”

Makayla smiled and hugged Devyn tightly before leaving.

Devyn sighed as she finished her glass of orange juice, wishing it was paired with some vodka to make all her sadness go away. That was dangerous thinking. She knew she didn’t need it, yet it was a deep desire and craving that she knew she had to shake off. She needed to keep herself busy so that she wouldn’t fall into her depression which would cause her to drink a bottle or two of some whiskey or vodka or even moonshine. It really depended on how depressed she was feeling.

Devyn forced herself to get off the chair and do something. She got started on doing the dishes and cleaning up the kitchen. Soon afterwards, she went to clean the bathroom and went to start up some laundry. When she finished all of those tasks, she found herself tired of being inside the house so she went to go get dressed.

She put on a comfortable pair of leggings and paired it with some converse and a baggy sweater. She usually cared about how she looked, but today was just one of those days. She threw her debit card into her pocket, grabbed her phone and the spare pair of keys to the house before she stepped out the door. She walked down the street and grabbed herself a cup of coffee and made her way down to another local cafe to sit and think.

Devyn watched the tourists and locals wander the busy streets, taking pictures of the city and rushing to get to their next destinations. It was madness to sit there and observe the life she found herself trapped in. Being out in the open like this allowed her to watch what it looked like to look like a chicken running around with its head cut off. It was amusing.

She sipped on her coffee as she thought about what had been going on the past few days. She thought about her brother and how she truly felt. She pondered on the thought for a moment and came to the conclusion that she may have given a fuck in the beginning, but now there was no room for any type of empathy for him. Her heart started to race as she remembered what his face looked like when she stared at him from across the table in the awful interrogation room. She felt like a worthless piece of shit when he told her his explanation as to why he did what he did. His explanation didn’t make any type of sense. It boggled her mind and she was angry. She thought that as she sat there sulking in alcohol, blaming herself, she should have placed the blame on the person who really fucked up and fucked her over. She started to beat herself up over the fact that she protected someone or tried to protect someone who didn’t value her like she valued them. She felt betrayed. At this point, she felt like if he were to die, she would laugh at his grave. Maybe not, or maybe she would, because he basically laughed at her face and thought it was real funny to murk the fuck out of her child and their mother. Yeah, now she was thinking. She considered and daydreamed about the day that he got out or the day that she orchestrated his murder in the jail cells. She justified that maybe his death would fill the new void she was feeling. Devyn gave no fucks about her brother because he obviously gave no fucks about her. She was supposed to be the older and loving sister, but he had crossed the line and put her through a bunch of shit. He could sit there and go on and on, saying that it was her fault for having a child with a Royal, but that didn’t mean he had to go on and kill the baby and her mother because his dumbass wanted to run with Stacks. Everyone is entitled to what they want to do with their own lives. Devyn felt really good about this and continued to sip on her coffee.

“I see her,” a voice from behind a bush on the opposite side of the street said into a cell phone. “I think I just found her, bro. She out here at some coffee shop. Up to you if you want me to go in now and kill her off. I mean, it won’t gimme no satisfaction. Just know the bitch is alive and kicking and that she still roamin’ the Chi.”

  Chapter 10

“Girllllllll, good moanin!” Devyn said with a huge, genuine smile on her face.

It had been a good and full week since the day that Devyn buried her loved ones, and she definitely didn't act like she had just buried them. She was a completely different person. She was full of life and extremely happy. She had been staying in between her apartment and Makayla’s place but had recently decided that she was going to stay at Makayla’s for a while. She found it to be a better idea than paying rent at her own place when she was mostly at Makayla’s. Makayla didn’t mind it, to her it meant having a roommate to keep her company and someone to help her out with bills and groceries. They had been best friends for so long that living with one another wouldn’t be anything out of the ordinary, if anything it would be second nature to them.

“Hey girl!” Makayla said as she hugged Devyn. “I have to head to work in a second and I won’t be home until really late. I have some things I need to take care of, aight? I love you so much girl!”

Makayla hugged her one more time before rushing out the door, leaving Devyn alone. She didn’t mind being left alone as much as she used to. Devyn felt so much better thanks to the help of her best friend, staying by her and picking her up whenever she was down.

It was time for Devyn to get back to work, and she was real excited about finally being able to be independent again. It was cool and all being taken care of and not having to really lift a finger to do anything because someone was there to support and provide for her, but Makayla wasn’t her husband. Devyn felt really bad when Makayla basically gave her the world and stood by her when she was really down and out. In return, Devyn wanted to help out Makayla and show her how much she appreciated her by going back to work and contributing to the house more.

Devyn excitedly grabbed her uniform and neatly set it on her bed before hopping into the shower. She lathered up with her favorite Japanese cherry blossom body wash and rinsed it all off in the piping hot water. When she was all done, she hopped out and dried up. In order to make her getting ready routine go by faster, she decided she had to multitask. Before running out of the bathroom to put on her uniform, Devyn flipped on her fla
t iron. She looked in her door mirror as she put on her uniform, patting away any wrinkles that came to sight. When she was content, she rushed back into the bathroom and grabbed her flat iron. She was disappointed to find that when she ran it through her hair, it wasn’t all the way hot enough to work its magic. Devyn didn’t see this as a drawback but as an opportunity to go ahead and do her makeup. She grabbed her liquid eyeliner and traced her upper lid with the dark black liquid, flicking the tip of the brush when she neared the outer corner of her eyes to create a gorgeous wing. Afterwards, she took her mascara and brushed through her eyelashes a few times to make them look big and luscious. She then glided her favorite deep crimson lip stain across her plump lips, fanning them soon after so that the formula would set. Just to be safe, Devyn kept her mouth open so that her lips would dry properly and not stick to one another.

She looked over at her clock and saw she was running out of time. In a rush, she took her flat iron and ran it through her hair, changing up her wavy hairstyle to be perfectly pin straight. When she was satisfied with her hair and makeup, she shut down the flat iron and put away all of her makeup. Devyn ran to grab her apron and her keys to put out in the kitchen so she wouldn’t forget it on her way out. While she was in the kitchen, she made some instant oatmeal in the microwave and started to pack her lunch. Being distracted, she didn’t notice someone pulling into her driveway. After a few moments, she heard the sound of the car door closing and assumed it was just Makayla coming back because she forgot something. She paid it no mind when she heard the front door open and heard footsteps walk inside. She just continued to prepare her snacks and lunch for her exciting day back at work.

“Hey, Makayla! What did you for--”

Devyn looked up from what she was doing to see what Makayla was coming back inside for. Her smiling face dropped into a frown as she dropped her tupperware and froze in fear.

“Hey bitch, you miss me?” Marcus said as he closed the door behind him and rushed towards her. Devyn was still frozen in fear. She was paralyzed and it looked like he was coming at her in slow motion. Before she could react, he grabbed her by her shoulders and shoved her against the wall. Reality set in and it just clicked with her that he had finally found out what really happened to Zion. She blanked out as she realized that Marcus wasn’t here for a friendly, “I’m going to beat you up for keeping him from me, and then I’ll make up with you later.” Marcus was there to kill her for lying to him.

“M-Marcus. W-What are you doing here?” Devyn asked, choking up on basically every word that came out of her mouth. He just sneered at her and gave her the scariest death glare ever. His eyes looked cold and it was evident that he was pissed off.

“You triflin ass, motherfucker. You ain’t tell me my son was dead! I swear to God, Dev, you ass ain’t smart for holdin info like that back from me. I’m gone kill yo ass!” he said as he shoved her against the wall violently a couple of times.

Devyn knew this wasn’t the way that she wanted to go out. She was just starting her life all over again and her life was beyond amazing at this point. Devyn decided to do something that she never knew she had the strength to do. Devyn decided she wanted to fight back.

Devyn mustered up her strength and she put her hands around his neck and dug her nails into his neck in effort to choke and hurt him.

“Gah! What the hell are you doing?” Marcus yelped as she increased her grip around his neck. He mimicked her and wrapped his hands around her neck too. His strength was ten times stronger than hers, and he had a better grip around her neck than she did on his. She had to think fast in order to protect herself and to get away. He was increasing his grip around her neck which caused her to reluctantly loosen up her grip. She was starting to get lightheaded and honestly thought this was all the fight she had in her. As everything started to become a blur, Devyn pulled through and mustered up her strength to pull one more move.

Instinctively, she dropped her hands from his neck to rest on his shoulders and she lifted her leg to knee him in his groin. She used her hands to give her better leverage so she could get a more powerful shot. She watched as he loosened his grip and doubled over in pain. Devyn was proud of herself and took this opportunity to kick him hard in his stomach before scurrying off to hide in one of the various rooms. She originally wanted to head outside so she could get to her car and drive away, but she caught a glimpse of a couple of Marcus’s men waiting. She headed over to one of the rooms and hid in the closet. She sat inside the closet and waited quietly, hoping he wouldn’t find her because she was hiding in a room that was weird to get into. The entrance was through another door and the closet sat in an odd place yet it was close enough to the door of the room that when Devyn decided to make her move to leave later on, she had a way out.

Marcus coughed and groaned. He took a real nice hit and her kicking him in his stomach only added to his pain. After writhing for a few minutes, Marcus gathered back some of his strength and hobbled up. He looked around the house and spotted a notepad and a pen on the kitchen table. He picked up the notepad and flipped through the pages. He became infuriated after reading the funeral notes that Makayla had written. He ripped out the papers from the pad and ripped them into several different pieces. Once he finished raging over his findings, he then took out a clean piece of paper and wrote on it.

Aye, thanks bitch! Thanks for being supportive to this hoe and leading me to find her. Yo ass won’t be able to find her though, and I just wanted to thank you for showing me where she was! You can now consider this bitch as good as dead.

He didn’t sign his name, assuming Makayla would be able to get that it was him who took her away. He placed the note on the table by the mess of ripped up papers before heading on his way to find where Devyn was hiding.

“Ohhhh, Devyn! Where are you, you triflin ass motherfucking hoe?” Marcus yelled as he stomped around the house. He purposely knocked over pictures, vases, and whatever else was in his path in efforts to scare her into revealing where she was. Devyn heard the commotion and crept into the corner of the closet she was in, praying that he wouldn’t find her. Marcus kept walking the halls, knocking over more things in hopes she would just freak out and run out. He didn’t know it yet, but he was getting closer and closer to her, and Devyn’s confidence that he wouldn’t find her, sunk to little to none.

  Click, click.

“Shit,” Devyn muttered. She immediately covered her mouth after saying that, in fear that he may have heard her. She started to silently sob as she crept more into the corner of the closet.

Marcus slowly walked through the room and looked everywhere. He moved the dresser to look behind it and moved the covers off the bed to see if she was hiding underneath. Devyn’s heart started to race as she watched him look under the bed because the bed was directly next to the closet that she was in. She saw him look under the bed, and it looked like he was looking straight at her. She honestly believed he was looking at her and freaked out because after he finished scanning the area under the bed, he fixed his gaze on to the closet and stared at the closet door for a good while. He peered his eyes at the door, looking real close as if he saw something or saw her. She tried to slow her breathing but found that it only accelerated because she watched him quickly get up from where he was. Marcus kept his eyes locked on the closet door, and it looked like he was smiling evilly as he approached the door. Devyn closed her eyes and decided she would accept her fate this time.

“Marcus!” an odd voice yelled in what seemed like a panicked tone.

Marcus turned towards the source of the sound and walked out of the room.

  “Marcus, is she here?”

He frowned at his patna and shook his head.

“Yeah, nigga! She is here and I’m tryna find her ass cause she kicked a nigga down and ran away from me!”

  Thud.

Marcus looked down the hall from where the source of the sound was.

“Shh, nigga. She prolly down that hall right there,” Marcus
said as he made his way towards the sound. It looked like his patna didn’t want in on what Marcus was about to do next. He straight dipped out of the house and headed back to the car.

Devyn took a deep breath and knew she had to move. She assumed the coast was clear and stepped out of the closet. She crept slowly out of the closet and headed towards the door. She peered down the hallway and saw the door down the hall opened. She took another deep breath and crept down the hall, heading towards the back of the house.

  Whack! Thud.

Down Devyn went and she was knocked out cold. Marcus stood over her and chuckled as he tapped her arm with his foot.

“Stupid bitch. I knew yo ass was in that damn closet. I heard you gasp the second I went inside. I just had to fake it and play it off. Yo ass didn’t see this coming. Stupid ass hoe.”

Marcus frowned down at her before bending over to pick her up and toss her over his shoulder.
