The Wagon (Carter Sisters Series #1) Page 10

by Morgan Dawson

Robert raises an eyebrow and follows my gaze. "More like a pain in the behind."

After he looks outside for a bit, he reaches across the table and takes my hand smiling. "Do you have a favorite snowflake like you have a favorite tree?"

I scowl at him. "No. I've told you over and over again that the reason I have a favorite tree is because I have the most memories with it. I don't have any memories with a random snowflake."

"I know. I just like seeing you angry." He teases. Still glaring at him, I feel a small smile escape.

It's dark now as we sit by the warm fire doing our own things. I'm knitting a blanket, while Robert is carving something in a piece of wood. I begin wondering, like I always do at this time of night, what my Pa and sisters are doing.

Adeline is probably not talking to Pa, while I'm sure Genevieve is braiding either Hazel or Lydia's hair like she usually does in the evening. I don't see them as much anymore, but I usually go visit every other day. I take the wagon, of course, which Pa gave to me. He's building another one for the family, a new one, for a new start.

The wagon he gives me reminds me of the good days when Pa was building it, and Ma was there.

Then, when Ma died, it was still there reminding me of the happy times, sometimes making me sad. Now as I look at the wagon with its beautiful smooth wood and large wheels, I think of how things can change so quickly, but sometimes it happens for the better.

And, once the problem is solved, there can be a much brighter and bigger future waiting, like the happiness I've found in my small wood house with Robert.

Everything is still perfect, almost like I'm in a dream. I'm with Robert, who makes me the happiest girl alive.

Smiling, I know he'll be a great Pa himself soon when the baby comes, but until then I have all of his witty comments to myself.
