FINANCIAL NEWS
The AAP Monthly Statshot for October 2012 shows print trade books down across the board. Adult harcovers were down 6.4% compared to the same period the year before, and down 2.4% for the year-to-date. Adult trade paperbacks did best, down a slim 0.2% for the month, and up 6.9% YTD. Mass-market books took the biggest hit, down 28.1% for the month, and down 17.3% YTD. Children’s/YA dropped only 2.6% for the month, and remains up 18.7% YTD. Adult e-books, on the other hand, were up an impressive 40.7%, up 35.9% YTD, with sales of $103.7 million. Physical audiobooks dropped 1.2% for the month (down 4.1% YTD) but audio downloads were up 28.4% for the month, and up 18.2% YTD.
US Census Bureau preliminary retail figures for January show bookstore sales of $2.133 billion, up 5.5% from January 2012. Overall retail was up 6.1%.
Penguin Group’s 2012 sales were up 1% to £1.05 billion, but operating profits fell 12%, at £98 million. A strong fourth quarter helped make up for a slow start to the year; currency exchange rates also helped improve figures.
HarperCollins had a positive second quarter (ending December 31), credited partly to the acquisition of Thomas Nelson. Parent company News Corp. announced second-quarter earnings (EBITDA) up 24% to $51 million; HarperCollins saw sales $377 million, up 18% from the same period a year before. For the first half of the year, HarperCollins saw sales of $729 million, up 17.5%, with earnings of $91 million, up 26%.
Harlequin’s sales fell in 2012, coming in at C$426.5 million, a 7.2% drop; operating earnings declined 11.6% to C$72.8 million. Slowing growth in digital sales was blamed for much of the decline, but North American print sales also slowed, starting in the second quarter. For the year, digital books were 20.7% of total sales, compared to 15.5% in 2011.
Simon & Schuster’s results for 2012 show sales of $790 million, up a slim 0.4% from 2011. Operating income fell 4% to $80 million, in part due to considerable legal costs and settlements from the e-book price-fixing cases. Digital sales (including audio) were up 35% over the year before, and made up 23% of total revenue; e-book sales were 20.4% of revenue worldwide, up from 15.4%. Sales were up for the children’s division, but down for adult. Noted bestsellers for the year included Stephen King’s The Dark Tower: The Wind Through the Keyhole and Cassandra Clare’s City of Bones and City of Fallen Angels. Fourth quarter sales were down 6%.
