Six had made that accusation go away. Who knew how? He might be married to Clair, but that hadn’t settled him down any—he was still edgy and dangerous.

Gabriel wasn’t entirely convinced that Six hadn’t had something to do with Stefan and the heroin, particularly after Stefan had appeared at the hotel demanding money in lieu of a tell-all exposé on the rich Stafford family and, in his words, their pet whore. Seemed like Six hadn’t liked that.

“Sophie signed the papers today. Mitchell is out of her life,” Cam said. “She told me to tell you that she wants to talk to you when you’re next in town.”

He didn’t spend much time in the city, not quite ready to take that step to moving away from the ranch. But one day he and Cam would need a place to stay for good. Cam was relying more on a manager, and he and Sophie, who it seemed was getting quite cozy with said manager, spent a lot of time working from the ranch, mostly during the week, returning to the hotel on the weekends.

What they had wasn’t conventional, but it was right.

“I’ll come back with you this weekend,” he said. “I know all she wants to do is hug me—she does that a lot.”

“Who wouldn’t want to hug you?” Cam said with a smile.

“There’s a reason I brought you out here,” Gabriel began, and couldn’t fail to notice the smile drop a little. Cam told him every day that he loved him. Never once did he falter, and not a single time did he expect an answer. Somehow the simple words had become something so much more than they should be.

Whereas with Cam they were an affirmation of how he felt, for Gabriel they would be an acceptance of himself, of forgiving the past, of knowing he had worth. Gabriel still feared rejection, and for the longest time he hadn’t valued Cam’s honesty and integrity. He had to face the wounds from his past, but he hadn’t been ready to.

Those simple words were all big things to him. They meant everything.

“Is everything okay?” Cam asked, worried, his expression confused when Gabriel hadn’t immediately started to talk.

Gabriel dismounted and helped to guide Cam down until they stood wrapped in each other’s arms.

“I love you, Cameron Stafford,” he said confidently. There was absolutely no way that Cam could fail to understand what this meant.

Cameron smiled at him, cradled his face like he had the first time they’d kissed, and then he closed his eyes like he always did.

“I love you,” he said, and he kissed Gabriel.

And right there on the ridge overlooking Legacy Ranch, Gabriel made a promise to Cam in his heart, that he would always love him.

Because he and Cam were forever.

READ JACK AND RILEY’S STORY IN THE TEXAS SERIES

  The Heart of Texas

Riley Hayes, the playboy of the Hayes family, is a young man who seems to have it all: money, a career he loves, and his pick of beautiful women. His father, CEO of HayesOil, passes control of the corporation to his two sons; but a stipulation is attached to Riley's portion. Concerned about Riley's lack of maturity, his father requires that Riley 'marry and stay married for one year to someone he loves'.

Angered by the requirement, Riley seeks a means of fulfilling his father's stipulation. Blackmailing Jack Campbell into marrying him "for love" suits Riley's purpose. There is no mention in his father's documents that the marriage had to be with a woman and Jack Campbell is the son of Riley Senior's arch rival. Win win.

Riley marries Jack and abruptly his entire world is turned inside out. Riley hadn't counted on the fact that Jack Campbell, quiet and unassuming rancher, is a force of nature in his own right.

This is a story of murder, deceit, the struggle for power, lust and love, the sprawling life of a rancher and the whirlwind existence of a playboy. But under and through it all, as Riley learns over the months, this is a tale about family and everything that that word means.
