He bent to kiss her forehead.

That was when he saw the flash. There was light in the distance, something flashing on top of a hill.

  Michal saw it too.

They both got to their feet and started for the light as quickly as they could.

They smelled the people before they saw them, and the smell was astonishingly strong and succulent. Darius stumbled as it hit him, then forced himself into check.

Michal started to run for the smell.

He stopped her, murmuring that she must control it, she must keep it back. And she did, taking deep breaths, calming herself.

But they were so used to being alone, that they didn’t even think of controlling the revenants. When they had crested the hill, they saw that the horde that had followed them was descending on a small company of humans around a fire.

The humans were on their feet, holding weapons, ready to fight.

Michal and Darius sent out their will to the revenants.

The revenants all froze, standing at attention.

And Michal and Darius made their way through their silent ranks to come face-to-face with the humans, all of whom took one look at their imposing figures and fell to their knees.

When the people did speak, sometime later, they weren’t speaking the same language that the people in the empire spoke, at least it didn’t seem so right away. With some effort, though, Darius realized that he could understand them. Their language was similar. The words were pronounced differently, like the difference between a Virgy accent and an Alaba one, but they were understandable.

He looked down at Michal. “They seem to think we’re some sort of gods.”

Michal’s lips twisted into a smile. “I could become accustomed to that.”
