  Synopsis:

Dominic Anderson knows exactly what he wants in life: simplicity, safety, and solidarity with his brothers. He’s vowed to spend each day living his life exactly how he chooses since the day his wife betrayed him and his four year military career turned into twenty.

Returning home after retirement from the Marines, he’s traded the sand in the Middle East for that of the New Mexico desert, Humvees for a motorcycle, and the comradery of men in uniform for the occasional woman at his feet.

Life was perfect until Makayla “Poison” Evans, Renegade MC Princess, knocked on his door, bruises on her face, neck, and arms, and no money to pay the cab driver. Pink hair, perfect body, and a mouth that Dom yearned to teach a million lessons, Mak asks more from him than he’s conceded to a woman in decades.

She needs his help, his protection, and against his better judgment, she expects him to keep her secrets. Only her secrets are deadly, dangerous, and have the potential to start a war between two MCs.

At what point does safeguarding a woman become a betrayal to the men Dominic calls his family? More importantly, can he get back the sanctity of his home once Makayla is no longer in the picture, or will he be forever tainted by her poison?

  Prologue

  Dominic

There’s nothing in the world that can knock the grin from my cheeks. I only have thirty-six hours to spend with my wife before heading back to the sand pits, but it’s better than nothing. This surprise, albeit short, leave couldn’t have come at a better time. When I got off the phone last night with Karen, I could hear the agitation in her voice. She didn’t even try to hide her feelings about me heading out again.

Joining the Marines right out of high school was always our plan. I wasn’t the only one involved in that decision, she was right there beside me. She wanted to be married and have children. Those were her life plans, ones I was happy to give her.

What we hadn’t anticipated was how easy being a Marine was for me. Leaving civilian life and becoming a soldier was the easiest transition of my life. Combine that with Operation Desert Strike, and I found myself in the Middle East not long after finishing The Crucible. Deploying wasn’t the issue. The Corps had trained me to fight, to save, to die if necessary. Leaving Karen behind two weeks after our simple courthouse wedding, which was only days after our high school graduation, was the hardest part. We’d seen each other nearly every day since we became an official couple in the cafeteria in seventh grade.

Three years of quick visits, leave that’s never long enough, and short phone calls have put a strain on our marriage. I’m hoping this impromptu leave will have the ability to bandage up the cracks that have been created from time and distance before my final year in the Corps. Four years is what I promised to give them. I’d wanted to make a career of the military, especially since I was so good at it, but the months away from Karen weren’t something either one of us was handling very well.

I breathe in the fragrant air surrounding our modest home. Early spring has always been my favorite time of year. Karen has expressed her distaste of living on base, complaining that everyone was too close, neighbors were nosy and intrusive. I reminded her that she’s safer on base than anywhere else. Frowning when I open the front door, I find myself making a mental note to speak with her again about keeping it locked. Crime still happens on base more than it should, and her safety is my number one concern.

The sound of the shower perks my ears, my body already humming at the mental image of my wife naked and soapy under a warm cascade of water. My cock thickens in my utility pants as I make my way across the open floor plan.

No sooner do I get fully erect before I begin to deflate. The playful baritone of a man’s voice assaults me right outside of the bathroom door. People say there are moments in their lives that they know a second before something happens that everything they once knew would be destroyed. They know their path in life will change in an instant, in the next breath. Sometimes that second is right before the deer jumps into their path on the highway, or the fire detector going off in the middle of the night, only to wake up already engulfed in a thick blanket of smoke.

For a soldier, it’s the clank of the pin being pulled from a grenade or the reflection of the sun as it hits the scope of a sniper rifle, the bullet already traveling into your gut before the sound registers in your ears.

Today that second is the soft whoosh of air as I push open my bathroom door, the humid air and steam from the shower making a hasty escape from the enclosed room. More times than not, when your world turns upside down, you’re in a state of shock. Your eyes seeing, your ears hearing the evidence right before you, but your brain hasn’t caught up yet. The complex mass of gray matter in your skull refusing to accept the sight as it fights to understand and explain away what every other sense in your body has already accepted. That’s not my wife bent over in the shower getting fucked by the next door neighbor, a man I’d consider a friend, a man who I asked to keep an eye on Karen while I was away. For the briefest of seconds I realize how disappointed in her I am, not only for cheating and ripping my heart out, but also because she didn’t choose another Marine to do it with. No, the man pounding into my wife as she moans like a whore is the husband of Second Lieutenant Sara Estes. He’s not a soldier, and for some reason that makes this feel like an even bigger betrayal.

My knuckles crack as I fist my hands at my sides. I don’t try to hide the loud pounding of my boots as I cross the tiled floor to the civilians who can’t even be bothered to pay attention to their surroundings. I nearly rip the glass door off of its hinges, as it pulls open and moans against the action.

Mid-pump, Samuel Estes raises his head and looks me right in the eye. I’ve never seen a human lose color so fast as the blood drains away from his face, not even soldiers on the battlefield when their bodies are nearly ripped in two by a spray of bullets.

Seconds is all it takes after I reach out and grab him by his unruly hair and pull him off of and out of my wife. She yelps in surprise at his loss, and I have to remind myself that hitting a woman is something I’d never do as my brain tries to reason that sometimes a bitch just needs to be smacked.

I close my eyes briefly, assaulted by the memories of my father beating my poor mother for crimes as simple as dirty shelves in the fridge, and the images are enough to calm my aggression toward the woman I thought I’d spend the rest of my life with. Instead, I focus my rage on the naked man at my feet.

Two punches are all I manage before Karen is out of the shower and attempting to pull me off of her consort.

“Please,” she begs with a trembling voice. “Don’t hurt him!”

I kick at the quaking pussy near my boots, feeling pride as he moans in pain.

I can’t even look at her as bile rises in my throat. Three years of marriage, going on ten years of being together, and this is how she repays me. I’ve been in the sand, trying not to die while fighting for my country, and she’s been here fucking a man while his wife does the same.

“Pack your shit and get the fuck out of my house,” I hiss as I walk past her and across the same path I just traveled minutes ago.

  “Stop, Dominic. I can explain!”

Ignoring her pleas, I walk out of that house and away from her. At the threshold, I leave any and all emotion that could hurt me this bad again. One year left in the Marines turns into seventeen as I keep my vow never to trust a woman again.

  Chapter 1

  Makayla

“I can see it in your eyes, Makayla. You want to tell me everything.”

I glare across the small metal table at DEA agent Dean Ryland, unable to hide the sneer my mouth has been set in since he scooped me up off the street when I left the clubhouse to grab a cup of coffee that wasn’t made by one of the club whores.

“You clearly need to be trained better, Detective. My eyes aren’t saying any more than you should expect my mouth to say.”

I smile inwardly as his dark green eyes flit to my lips. If he even has an ounce of ability to read the minds of criminals, my ability to detect arousal and interest in a man is a hundred times greater. The barely noticeable hitch in his breathing and the way he shifts on his feet every time I lick my dry lips betrays his inability to hide the fact that he’d trade my silence and any knowledge I may have of the Renegade MC for a quick fuck.

Men are so easy. Thinking with their dicks instead of the organ between their ears. I shift my weight in the hard metal chair, spreading my legs just a few inches wider. The action doesn’t go unnoticed as Ryland attempts to clear his head with a quick shake. Heated eyes run the length of my body, and my confidence with the situation multiplies.

“It’s Agent,” he corrects with a hoarse voice.

“Well, Agent, you don’t know shit about me. Am I under arrest?” My mind races to try to imagine what he could have on me. There are a million things I can think of that would put me in this small room and probably double that I can’t recall.

He frowns. The simple action of his l
ips turning down informs me that he doesn’t have shit, other than an egotistical attitude and the misconception that a woman from the club would relinquish information quicker than one of the men.

The swift laugh that escapes his mouth is unexpected and causes an unwanted shiver to run along my arms.

“I know more about you than you think, Poison.” I recoil at the use of my club name. It doesn’t go unnoticed, but I don’t give him the satisfaction of insisting he call me Mak.

I cross my arms over my chest and lean further back in my chair as silence fills the room.

He takes a seat on the other side of the table which feels more dangerous than when he was standing, leaning over into my personal space. From that position, he could easily look down my low-cut shirt. My tits have gotten me out of more than one delicate situation, and I was banking on them helping me again this time. No such luck.

Ryland’s position across from me now seems more official, more ominous. My pulse raises as his fingers splay out on the nicked metal of the table top. Somehow, even without a folder or a file box of documentation in front of him, his relaxed posture causes more alarm than I thought possible.

Without the aid of even a notepad, my blood runs cold as he begins to list off things from my life.

“Your mom overdosed on heroin when you were sixteen. As the bastard child of Adam “Breaker” Hanigan, your on-again off-again childhood trips to the Renegade MC clubhouse became a permanent thing. After your father died for betraying the Dirty Slayers MC by fucking the president’s wife, your brother, Brooks “Scorpion” Hanigan, took over the Renegades at the ripe young age of twenty, a year after you moved in.” He raises a perfectly manicured eyebrow at me, checking to see if he’s made a mistake. He hasn’t, but I wouldn’t correct him if he did.

I school a passive look on my face, so he continues.

“From the look on your face, you don’t seem to be getting along with many of the people there.” I barely resist the urge to bring my fingers to my split lip. Large sunglasses remain in place, hiding the fresh black eye behind the tint. He cocks an eye when I tug the long sleeves of my leather jacket past my knuckles.
