Jack II

Everyone laughs and my face heats more. “After we exposed my sister’s killer, we had a big fight. Jack left and wouldn’t take my calls.”

“Hold on, little lady. Don’t make it sound worse than it was. I thought I was avoiding Lucky.”

“Don’t blame me mate, I gave her my phone because hers was stolen. You were being a twat.”

Lilac points at each of those involved. “Let me get this right. You were fighting, she lost her phone and she tried to call you but you ignored the calls because you thought it was Lucky?”

Jack growls. “Lucky was trying to give me advice and I didn’t need to hear it.” He nibbles my ear and kisses my cheek.” We figured it out, didn’t we, baby-momma? Unfortunately, by then, I had already taken a job guarding McAlister.”

“How is the old goat?” Lucky wanders into the kitchen grabs a few more beers and passes them around.

“Other than my recording there’s no proof of any wrong-doing. He’ll probably be voted back in for years to come” Jack reaches for the cheese and not finding the knife, pulls a switch blade from his pocket. “Not many politicians can deal with blackmail.”

“I understand his daughter is in rehab.” Isabella shuffles the cards, deals, then leans back into Grayson.

He shakes his head while sorting his hand. “My cards have sucked all evening.”

“Don’t start the next game without me.” I call out from the kitchen.

“One more thing. What about Philip?” Lilac adds a stack of dirty plates to the dishwasher.

“You mean Lance? His trial’s set for early next year but he’s not going anywhere. The evidence against him is overwhelming.”

You’re the shrink. What makes a normal guy turn into a murderer?” Lilac adds detergent and I start the machine.

“For one thing, the Feds say he was way in debt. When he saw traces of fentanyl, he may have thought he found gold. All he had to do was threaten to report his findings to the FBI and Zheng would pay up.”

  “Why the elaborate hoax story?”

“Oh, that’s easy. He made that up so his friend Mike would hold onto his proof. He figured it would work on me, too.”

“You’re lucky he didn’t shoot you when you gave him your gun.”

“I was just thinking that myself but back then, not so much… Coffee, anyone?

Much later, Jack and I cuddle in front of my faux fireplace, while the lights twinkle on the real fir tree covered with decorations.

“Next year, we’ll be celebrating with our baby girl.” I picture a dark-haired beauty with his eyes and his smile.

“I can’t wait. Maybe I’ll dress up like Santa.”

Giggling, I try to picture him in a red suit, white beard, and big belly. “Really?”

“What? Don’t think I can pull it off?”

“Since when does Santa have incredible abs, carry a gun, and is hot as hell?”

“You have no imagination. C’mere Mrs. Sexy Santa.” He spoons me close, I sigh happily, and my eyelids droop.

The clock down the street chimes as I nestle deep under the covers, visions of our baby daughter dancing in my head.
