“This is Gad Collins.” Daddy drags the shiny boy over to meet me. Even his handshake is limp compared to Rafe’s huge palm that’s slightly calloused and full of confident control. The preppy westerner – there’s a weird mash-up – can’t stop staring at my tits so I’m tempted to offer a selfie except Shea interrupts.

“There’s someone I want you to meet,” he tells not me but my father.

Plenty of the men are making eyes at me and even coming in for the approach but I'm dejected and unable to have a relaxed time without Rafe here.

How could he leave me when this could be out last couple of days together? I’ve decided I’m going to come back, even if I have to beg Edie to give me a job at McDools so I can be close to him. But still it would have been more encouraging if Rafe had put up a fight for me or at least stuck around to say goodbye. I guess I was fantasizing after all. My infatuation with him was a lure that only held him for one night.

  Ouch.

I see Shea introducing my dad to a man close to his age, a little older but still very handsome with an air that seems familiar to me. Perhaps Shea thinks the two will have some shared interests that will keep Daddy out of my hair for tonight. I bet Dallyce put him up to it.

I need to get away from socializing, which isn't like me at all but I can’t enjoy other people without Rafe at my side. His absence fills the large rooms and even spills to the outside. I look up at the stars and remember the last time I was gazing at them. As I held Rafe’s head cupped between my breasts, his rough chin bristling on my skin, after we’d both just exploded in the most delicious burst of pleasure filling all my veins. I’d give anything to feel that again. I need him so much my limbs are weak with disappointment.

I turn to head back through the double doors and return to the party. My head feels too heavy, my neck too tired to hold it up high. In my high heels, I trip on a cobble on the terrace and go flying, ready to smash into the ground, instead I crash into an upright wall. A boulder of solid muscle.

  “Oh,” I squeak.

Seeing Rafe here was the last thing I expected but my heart is leaping into my throat with the unbridled pleasure.

“Modesty,” he rasps, his warm breath hits my upper lip and he doesn’t release his grip on my arms where he saved me from falling.

You’re back,” I mewl, too stunned to say much else.

I’m so happy to see him I could slide my arms around his rigid wide neck and trail my fingers along the leathery skin to where it meets his lush hair, just starting to show a couple of flecks of pepper at the edges.

“I am and you’re safe to go home now. No one will hurt you ever again, that’s a promise,” he grits out roughly.

I get the feeling he’s mad at me but still he’s making no effort to put me away from him. It’s me that ought to be mad but I’m curious about what he means.

“Let’s just say it’s taken care of. That puss Andrew won’t be abusing women again for as long as he lives.”

“Ohmigod, “I breathe out, half afraid of what he might have done. “You didn’t – kill him?”

I couldn't bear for Rafe to get into any trouble because he was protecting me.

His cold mask suddenly breaks into a wide grin and he cracks up laughing.

“No of course not, Baby. I just taught him a lesson about what happens to men that use women for their own ends.”

I laugh too and I’m relieved, not to say delighted that he’s back. His face loses its mirth and he gets hard and serious again. His hands release me and the vacancy makes me want to beg him to return. He can’t quite fully depart though and one heavy palm rests on the curve of my hip, that intimate place that only a lover may hold.

  “Thank you,” I murmur.

“You may not think I’m good enough but I’m always gonna look out for you.”

  “Don’t say that.”

Suddenly I realize how he could though, looking at it through his eyes. Seeing me leave him as soon as my father pin-pointed his lack of prospects.

He shrugs it off as though it doesn’t matter, but the pain is plain in his face.

I reach up to put my arms around his neck.

“Rafe, I’m not like Daddy. I don’t care what your so-called prospects are, I don't care how old you are or how big your house is.”

“It’s big enough for me to give you a damn good chase.”

“That’s all I care about. I want you, not your freaking prospects. I told my father that – he can take me home but he can’t keep me there. I already asked Edie for a job at McDools.”

“No girl of mine is working in a bar,” he grits, making me smile.

  “No girl of yours?”

  “Yeah. Totally fucking mine.”

He lays his hands on both hips to press me to arms length and look into my face.

“You mean I can stay with you?” I whisper. “Even if I don’t need your protection now?”

  “You’ll always have my protection.”

  “Is that a yes?”

“Of course. You know I want you – if you’ll have me. Because there’s no guarantee I’ll ever be more than a rough old cowboy.”

“Yum,” I say and pull his mouth down over mine.

Rafe responds like a bolt of lightning, his tongue wraps mine into a ravenous tangle and his hands cup around me seeming to envelop my entire body in their heat. Attached at the mouth and hip, we fall back inside the big house and Rafe kicks open the closest door he comes upon. He heels it shut and we’re closeted inside a small but luxurious powder room, I notice how luxurious it is before the door slams and we’re plunged into darkness.

Rafe is like a wild man, like he starving and didn’t just ravage me a number of times two days ago. He lifts me up forcefully onto the counter top, parting my thighs with a desperation as though he’s been away for a year. He yanks my underwear to one side and I tug at his belt. He helps me free his gorgeous length and immediately buries himself inside me with a groan. I cling to his shoulders, clawing him in deeper, craving him as much as he does me. I know I won’t ever let him go.

It’s hard and fast and I love it like that as much as when he takes his sweet burning time with me. Afterwards his head stay buried into my neck and we cling to each other in the dark, panting. His hot breath making the side of my neck tingle.

Then he puts me back together carefully and takes me by the hand to lead me in to the party.

“I’m telling Daddy that I’m not leaving,” I whisper. “Not ever.”

  Epilogue

  Rafe

It turned out that Modesty didn’t have to say a word to her father which was both a good and a bad turnaround. I wanted to see her stand up to him for real, to assert her independence. But I also didn't want to see any more of a rift develop between them. I was done with rifts now.

The old man came up to us, pushing his way through the throng of cowboys that surrounded us out of nowhere when we came back to the party. Clapping me on the back with their usual jocularity, for a second I thought we’d been caught out and they were teasing me for ravaging my girl in the privy. But they were saying they were glad to have me home, like I’d been away a century for fucks sake, instead of just two long nights of driving back and forth halfway across two States to ensure my girl’s safety.

They’re still congratulating Modesty on being the only girl to make a man out of me and all the other stuff that comes from being a stamped man. Yeah, guys get their cards stamped too, not with V but T – for TAKEN. Even Quint was grinning, standing to one side with Edie, the owner of McDools bar, under his wing.

“You can smirk,” I called out to him. “You’ve been lassoed as well.”

“Best thing ever happened to me,” he shouted over all the back slapping and jostling.

Then Mr Blaze loomed up in front of me and I was ready for some anguish but the dude was gurning at me like a lunatic.

“Before you say anything, Daddy, I’ve decided to stay here with -”

  “Modesty
you didn’t tell me Rafe was a Millitant,” her father interrupted, talking over top of her in a way I find disrespectful.

I stiffened at that along with what he said, wondering who told him.

My eyes batted over to Shea, only he, Abe and old Jock Foxworth know my true roots. Like I said, I don’t need to prove myself or act the big man.

But he shook his head imperceptibly.

“He introduced himself to you Daddy,” Modesty said. “You know his name.”

“Yes but he’s one of the Millitants.”

Even now I’m freaking relieved that my girl shrugged and her face read confusion, because if this had of been a put-up job I don’t think I could have tolerated it. Chloe’s perfect table loaded with perfect catered food would have gone over and everything wrecked. I was considering it when I saw him standing at the end of the buffet – my father.

“I met Mr Millitant senior,” Modesty’s dad said, like he uncovered the fucking Egyptian pyramids.

God knows it’s been almost that long since the old man and I looked on each other. It sure took the pleasure off the evening to see my old man there after all these years of living completely estranged.

We didn’t even shake hands or make any effort to get close until Modesty went right up to him and introduced herself. Then I’m damned if she didn’t have the old bastard eating right out of her hand, softened as though she’d handed over three gran-kids on a buffet plate. Which I guess is gonna be a thing in time, not that I’m thinking ahead or anything.

Then before the evening drew to an end with the rich fucks from the other ranches drifting off and the cowboys heading for a nightcap around the firepit, Modesty pulled my father – yeah you heard right, she hooked those little hands around his thick forearm and led him right up to me.

“I’m so glad to meet your Papa,” she said. “I guess I figured out how you managed all those candles during our dinner date.”

“My old housekeeper will do anything for me, especially if it means she’ll get to see me settled.”

“You came to the ranch, You came back to Millitant?” my old man said, looking at me with actual hope in his rheumy old eyes. He’s aged so much since I saw him last it brought to mind how brief life is and how we better take care of those around us while we still have them.

“Yeah, I stop by now and then. To see our old housekeeper, the woman that basically raised me, and her gran-kids.”

“You didn't think to stop in at the house and see your won father?”

“I check up on how you are with Haddy,” I tell him.

“And we promise to come see you more often now,” Modesty promises, her little hand on his shaky arm. “I love your property, Mr Millitant, I have such a fond unforgettable memory linked to that place.”

Man, she’s good. The old guy was going all gooey at his gruff edges for my girl.

“Well, it’ll all be his one day,” he said, smiling down on her indulgently. “He’s my only kin.”

Modesty gave him a hug, a real live hug, not one of those airy kissy things girls usually do. It makes me fall in love with her right then and I almost told my old man it’ll be hers too some day – hers and her kids. Our kids. But that could wait. First there’s a chase I’m going to give her around the barn and then a good long spanking for everything she put me though the last couple days.

  Modesty

When Rafe dozes off in the porch rocker (yes, I got a pair same as Dallyce has. I must be getting old), his hat like always pulled down over his eyes to shield out the sun, I often surreptitiously undo all the buttons of his shirt. Just so I can sit and marvel at the stacked ridges climbing up his chest, rock solid and flexing with taut power even when he’s bagged.

I trail my finger back and forth along the length of each one, all the way down to his leather belt where the deep indents of slanting torsion disappear inside his jeans pointing straight at the most beautiful thing in my life. Okay, I’m obsessed with his perfect hard cock. It’s always rock solid, pointing up at the stars like a rocket and just as ready to blast.

Rafe still interrupts me at work almost every day. Like he ordered, I couldn’t take up the job with Edie at McDools. But Dallyce told Chloe about my design flair and she immediately called me over to start work. So I get to work on designing weddings all day – what a dream. Right now it’s set ups for the publicity material and you know I’m spending half the time choosing and re-choosing between the many options, making my selection for when my day arrives.

  Some day.

Because Rafe hasn’t asked me yet. Right now, I’m still in crazy insane infatuation and can’t keep my hands off Rafe for a moment. And he’s even worse. I’ll be walking down the wide hallway of the big ranch house and suddenly, a clamp will go around my wrist and yank me with a yelp into some closet or powder room. Now I can’t get through my day, without expecting to be ambushed every time I walk through the beautiful house.

“Jesus Christ, I love you so much, Modesty,” Rafe rasps as he spreads my legs and shoves whatever clothes I’m wearing out of his way urgently. “I can’t get through a day of work without fucking your beautiful pussy, just so you know how much I worship you. All of you.”

“I love you too,” I breathe. “More than I can say.”

“So don’t say, show me,” he says, low and raw.

Then he slides all the way into me and my skin fires with tingling heat just like it’s the first time all over again. I’ve stopped panicking that someone will hear us as we cling to each other and pant hard through the thrusts of our fast adoration session. Rafe never fails to extract a massive O from my body and I go back to work glowing with pride and happiness.

Chloe often looks at me strangely and I want to recommend a mid-morning climax to her to loosen her up, let her know there’s more to life than more money and success. Bit she’s driven and no man is good enough for her. Not even Gad Collins from the ranch between Foxworth and Millitant. Dallyce of course just grins because she gets how living with an experienced man makes a girl very content.

We go over to visit Rafe’s father once a week.

“He’s mellowed out,” Rafe tells me when I gently inquire about the reasons for the split between them. “Back then he was a fucking taskmaster and I could never be good enough.”

“You’re good enough for me,” I say, straddling his lap so he grins up at me. “And for him too now he’s come to his senses.”

“I think that’s more about you knocking him senseless,” Rafe says as he pulls my off-the-shoulder top all the way off and admires my breasts, cupping them lightly in his palms. “Same as you do to me.”

When he wants to give me some luxury, he takes me to stay the night at Millitant, in the enormous room with the king-bed we almost lose each other. I climb on Rafe’s lap and press myself into the cave of his solid chest when we go to sleep.

“This house is so big,” I say, glad he’s here to fill the space with his bulk and his electric sparkle.

“I guess we gotta try to get used to it. Sooner or later it’s all gonna belong to us.”

“I hope that day doesn't come too soon. I’m happy in our little cabin and I’m happiest on the back of your truck under the stars.”

He hugs me closer then, happy that we share that love of the outdoors and the simple life. All we need in the world is each other.

“So when do these princesses arrive, Abe?”

A round of jeers and whoops circles the ring of guys at my question. The ranch foreman shrugs his shoulders from beneath his hat, hooked over his forehead to cover his face.

We're sitting around the fire-pit on hay bales and oil drums, anything we can muster. Out under the stars like we prefer. Rafe and I often sleep out here in the open. Rafe claims the sound of cattle grumbling helps him sleep. I just like the air and the big sky.

“You afraid of being alone in that big ol' bed all weekend?” Jessop, the kidder, prods me. “That why you asking about princesses?”

“He's only inquiring when we can expect to see some sweet young things wandering around the place,” Rafe puts in.

“Abel wasn't here last year when the scream queens came,” Quint mutters as he emerges from his forge, sweating and soot-blackened and crosses the yard, heading to his house.

Abel, the ranch foreman, shifts beneath his hat and crosses his arms tighter across his broad strapping chest. I recall him taking off to work on another ranch for a while. Before old man Foxworth went and asked him to come back.

“They'll be here tomorrow. Old Jock Foxworth and Chloe went into town to meet them at some shindig.”

“Those girls aren't gonna be any use for a booty call,” Rafe puts in. “Don't you remember last year, they came with their chaperone. Old biddy kept them locked up like beauty queen nuns.”

“Is your John Thomas about to fall off from lack of attention?” Jessop continues with the joshing.

“He gets plenty of that, don't you worry,” I butt back. “You on the other hand need to pop your cherry.”
