Kobo Indecent Arrangement Part II
Page 9
Not in the kitchen. The living room or the dining room. Possibly Max’s study.
Fuck. The sound was too faint to get a read on it.
He couldn’t wait here. He needed to clear the house.
Since Max’s office was closest, he headed there first.
And knew immediately that he’d picked wrong.
The intruder ran at him from the living room, giving Jesse just enough time to turn and meet the guy head on.
Smaller and slimmer than Jesse, the guy was fast and he had the element of surprise on his side.
Jesse tried to wrap his arms around the guy and use brute strength to take him down fast but the intruder kept evading him, moving just out of reach every time. Not trying to run. Jesse couldn’t figure out why.
Until the guy feinted to his left, as if to get around him. And when Jesse moved to intercept him, he felt the knife sink deep into his side, all the way to the hilt.
Jesse reacted with a burst of strength as he shoved the attacker away. He heard the guy hit the opposite wall with enough force to break the drywall, but the motion made the knife tear something inside that hurt like ever-loving hell.
He didn’t have time to catch his breath, though, because his attacker bounced off the wall and came back at him. The guy grabbed the knife and twisted it, sending agony pouring through Jesse like hot lava before his assailant pulled it out.
Jesse couldn’t keep silent and a pained grunt escaped but he managed to grab the other guy’s arm as he brought the knife down again.
With a twist of his wrist, Jesse heard the guy’s arm break.
“Jesse! Oh my god.”
Through the ringing in his ears, he heard Mally’s voice. What the hell was she doing in the goddamn hall? Why the fuck hadn’t Max got her out of here?
Then he realized his assailant was no longer near him.
Blinking the blurriness from his eyes, he saw Max toss the guy across the room then go after him with a speed Jesse had forgotten Max possessed. But their intruder was smart and good. He evaded Max, getting in a few punches before Max finally got him in a headlock and slammed his head into the wall hard enough to put a hole in it.
The guy slumped into a ball against the wall.
And Max pulled his gun.
“Max! No.”
Max held the gun straight at the man’s head as he walked to the wall to flip the switch for the light in the hall. Not bright enough to blind anyone, even momentarily.
Max ripped off the balaclava then pressed his gun to the guy’s temple.
And even through the pain clouding his thoughts, Jesse knew Max was about to do something really stupid.
“Max,” Mally pleaded. “Don’t do it. Please.”
Max ignored her, his focus laser-point sharp on the man who’d dared to break into their home. “Did you think I wouldn’t know who you were?”
Their intruder said nothing, staring back at Max with an impassive gaze.
“Not willing to talk, huh?” Max shrugged. “Doesn’t matter. You know I can’t let you leave.”
“And you can’t shoot him.” Mally’s voice shook. “Max. Put the gun down.”
Max ignored her, keeping the gun pointed at the man as he took a few steps away.
Jesse felt the world spinning, felt Mally pressing something against his wound, making it hurt like fuck, while trying to talk Max out of killing the man on their floor.
A man both he and Max recognized.
“Go ahead,” the guy finally said. “Just do it. But I’m pretty sure you don’t have the—”
Max pulled the trigger.
