Ali's Journey Home

“Well let me close the diner, I have one customer out there who is almost done. You get ready and as soon as he is gone we can go.”

Aunt Pearl struggled to get to the edge of the bed. She knew that she had to be there. She felt the presence of someone she had not felt in a very long time.

She knew that Jeremiah was going to need her, and she couldn’t let that sweet boy down. He had done many favors for her in the past, and the fact that he too saw the same ghosts that she saw well it made their connection even more special.

“I am ready” Aunt Pearl said as Mollie let the last customer out of the diner.

“You need to take a wrap Pearl; it will be a little chilly out there by the ocean breezes.

“You are right it will be quite chilly there.” Aunt Pearl replied but the ocean breeze was not as chilly as the presence of multiple ghostly figures in one room.

Mollie helped her into the car and shut the door.

When they arrived at the house Aunt Pearl paused.

“They are all here tonight Mollie. It is like they are all gathered for a funeral”

“What do you mean Aunt Pearl?”

“They are all here, but it is like they are all waiting for something. I am just not clear what it is.”

Aunt Pearl and Mollie walked up the stairs and knocked on the door.

Eddie answered and then escorted them upstairs. It took a while. Mollie on one side and Eddie on the other but Aunt Pearl finally made it to the top of the stairs.

She took a deep breath and entered Mary’s room. She felt the presence of the Captain and greeted him. “Hello Captain.”

“Hello Pearl” the Captain replied. He was standing at the foot of Ali’s bed.

Everyone was silent staring at the old woman. She nodded to the Captain. Jeremiah finally had to break the unnerving silence.

“What are you doing here Aunt Pearl” Jeremiah asked?

“I am here to help Ali of course” she replied to Jeremiah, but she immediately turned and faced C.J.

“Charlie, it’s really you. You are here in flesh and blood.”

She reached over and touched his hand to be sure he was real and not a spirit.

“I felt your presence so strong tonight, and I just knew I had to come.”

“Aunt Pearl,” C.J. exclaimed. “It’s really you.”

“Yes, my boy it is really me.” He stood up and she hugged him as if she had not seen him in years.
