  “Yes, indeed. It must be the case with the stories of the ancient tree sprites that seem to have done us no harm. And did you just overhear some of the wedding stories people told to our aunt and uncle? Every one was full of mishap and misadventure. One would think it a miracle that any man and any woman ever managed to marry.”

  Nathaniel laughed and steered them both into a semicircle so that they were back on the path towards the great house that would someday be theirs.

  “And so our story will also be told in this season for years to come, and at weddings at which the bride and groom somehow defy the Fates,” he said.

  “And do not forget,” Emma began. Nathaniel stopped, and turned to face her.

  “They must live very long and happily,” she said softly, in the moment before he kissed her.

  Sharon Sobel is the author of eight historical and two contemporary romance novels, and is the Secretary of Romance Writers of America. She has a PhD in English Language and Literature from Brandeis University and is an English professor at a Connecticut college, where she co-chaired the Connecticut Writers’ Conference for five years. An eighteenth century New England farmhouse, where Sharon and her husband raised their three children, has provided inspiration for either the period or the setting for all of her books.
