He walked back over to the front of the cabin. Paused for a long moment outside the front door. Thinking about what was inside. What was waiting for him there. Dark spaces behind the windows, an endless void he couldn’t see. The wind howled overhead. A few drops of rain splashed against his face.
Riley turned. Walked around the side of the house, to the Toyota. Threw his bag in the back seat, took the keys from the glovebox, and put them in the ignition. Listened to the engine come to life, roaring proudly. Put his foot on the gas, and the car jumped forward.
A half mile later, the cabin was a tiny dot in his rear view. He went around a bend, and when he looked back, it wasn’t there at all.
