Every Trick in the Rook

Page 27

by Marty Wingate

  Acknowledgments

The inspiration for Alfie came from Esther Woolfson’s book Corvus, the true story of living for more than twenty-five years with a rook (named Chicken) that her daughter brought home as a fledgling. It is a lovely tale of getting close to a different species and our perceptions of intelligence and companionship. In writing my piece of fiction and creating Alfie, maybe I stretched a rook’s abilities—and then again, maybe I didn’t.

For ideas, inspiration, guidance, and encouragement, many thanks go to Colleen Mohyde of the Doe Coover Agency, editor Kate Miciak, and my fellow writers and critique group (Kara Pomeroy, Joan Shott, and Louise Creighton). And grateful thanks to you, the reader, who enjoys a mystery grounded in our natural world.
