‘Detective Constable Rupert Charles Ma’am, but first they are asking me for a quick interview for the news. I need to speak to Connie Seabourne at the press office regarding the contents of a short press release but I will have to do it live.’ Instinctively he looked at his watch.

‘What sort of content were you thinking?’ said ACC Smythe.

‘Along the lines of, “Earlier today officers from two forces were involved in confronting two armed criminals. They were challenged by armed officers in an area away from the general public. The two men fired at the officers who had asked them to drop their weapons. The officers returned fire when their request was not complied with and, as a result, both armed criminals lost their lives. A sterling effort was made by the team and paramedics but they were unable to save either of the two men. Obviously there is a major enquiry underway by the IPCC.” That should suffice for now don’t you think?’ he said.

‘I believe it will, yes. In fact, I’ll be at your side, we’ll do this together. I’ll endorse the efforts of everyone.’

Dylan reluctantly agreed. But managed to text Jen letting her know everything was over and he was doing the press conference with the ACC and to get Maisy to watch. When he did the interview he over exaggerated the touching of his tie.

After a brief live interview, the two detective inspectors sat alone in Dylan’s office when Wendy Smythe had left.

‘Two-nil to the home side Jack.’ Terry was jubilant.

‘What a couple of bad bastards they were; they even wore bullet proof vests I am told,’ added Dylan.

‘Thank goodness the firearms officers hit with a neck and head shot, otherwise it may have been a different scenario.’

‘Fingers crossed ballistics match up the weapons with both our murder scenes Terry.’

‘They will Jack, they will. Look I have to debrief the team back North, they’re going to be waiting for my update. So let’s take a rain check on a drink tonight and we’ll catch up early next week shall we?’

‘That sounds good. Thanks mate for the assistance,’ he said and, as the two men stood, they shook hands.

Terry turned at the door. ‘And I hope your lass is feeling a lot better soon, and the missing detective turns up safe and well.’

‘Me too Terry, Take care mate.’

‘I better go, otherwise you know what they’re like, they’ll be spending my overtime budget - that’s already in the bloody red.’

‘Yours and mine alike,’ Dylan said with a faint hint of a smile.

Dylan sat alone quietly for a moment, all he could hear was the ticking of the clock on his office wall. The telephone rang and ended the moment. It was dark outside. It had been a long day but the killing had been stopped.

‘Glad it’s all over,’ said Jen. ‘You and the ACC are headline news.’

Dylan was eager to know. ‘Did our Maisy see it?’

‘Yes, she did and she was over the moon that you did that thing with your tie.

‘Good. That’s all that matters... I’m heading home.’
