Torn Apart (African American Romance)

When Rhonda arrived home that Saturday she tried connecting with David but could not reach him. She did not have a key to his place, something that he conveniently kept forgetting to take care of, so this time she had no choice but to stay with her parents that evening. After leaving message after message for David to call her, Rhonda finally decided she would just have dinner with him after church, which they usually did anyway those Sundays after church, and then have the talk with him. She did talk to her parents that night and confessed to them that she was not in love with David and decided she was going to end the engagement. Surprisingly, Rhonda’s parents were thrilled by her news because they noticed that she did not seem to be happy. Having her parents support made her more determined to end everything that following day. When she arrived early to the church the next morning, Rhonda tried stopping by David’s office first to greet him and make plans for them to dine privately after service. As she approached the closed office door, she heard an argument believing it was a result of a bickering couple being counseled by David, but then she recognized the angry male voice as belonging to David. She listened a few seconds longer realizing that the female voice belonged to a lady who was cursing David for leaving her and her baby in a dump while going off and preparing to marry “that bitch.” Immediately, Rhonda knew whom that female voice belonged to and walked in on the confrontation. Both David and Dana stopped arguing as they looked at Rhonda; they appeared to be in more shock than she.
“Dana, don’t worry—you can have him! I was about to end things with him today anyway. Trifling, lying-ass bastard!” Rhonda said as she pulled the engagement ring off and flung it at him.
“Rhonda, wait…I was going to tell you but…”
“When? You should have told me as soon as you stepped back into my life, David. I almost lost the love of my life trying to give you another chance. Thank God he waited for me so don’t you worry. I’ll be just fine.”
Rhonda walked out the office leaving David and Dana behind her. From what she later heard, David ended up trying to do the right thing by marrying Dana and becoming a full-time father to their baby. It wasn’t before long, though, that David was back to sleeping around on Dana.
When Rhonda returned back to the city to share the news with Ken, of course he was thrilled to have Rhonda all to himself. Before long, they got the news about Rhonda being pregnant. Rhonda’s parents soon came to the city that summer to meet Ken and his parents, and everyone got along perfectly. It was during their visit that week that Ken spoke with Mr. and Mrs. Downing to get permission to ask for Rhonda’s hand in marriage, which they happily gave their blessings. That following week, Ken treated Rhonda out to a night on the town, something similar to what he had always done but at the end of this particular date he proposed to Rhonda in the park where they met for their first official date. Ken pulled a Tiffany ring box out of his pocket, showing a ring worthy of his queen, and Rhonda immediately said yes without any hesitation or doubts. Now as Rhonda walked through that same park holding hands with Ken and trying to get him to tell her what big surprises he had in store that next day for her birthday, Rhonda could not help but feel the happiest that she had ever been. Life continued to be leaning in her favor, and she could not wait for what more it had to offer.
