As for Brien and Alyse, they lived rather better than paupers. The king saw to that, though he did not think it worth mentioning to his mother.
When their son Alan was twelve years old, he was taken into the royal court and placed under the king’s protection. This was what Ironglove had done for his bastard, Brien Fitz Count, and, if the disciplines of court life had taught Brien to honour his word, they might do as much for Alan.
