Lisa held a cup of coffee in one hand, a bottle of creamer in the other. "Transfer? You’re going to transfer from UCLA to Podunk, New York?" Her heart was racing. She’d bend over backwards to get back to Moon Lake, but not if it meant Greg sacrificing his career.

  "Hey, Rochester’s a good school."

"Yeah, but it’s not your dream school."

  "Maybe my dreams are changing."

She shook her head. "You don’t have to do this. I told you, I’d stay here with you until you finish medical school, then we can go back home."

He made his own cup of coffee. "It seemed so important, like it had to be this school, then I got here and I realized it was just a place. I’d built it up in my mind to the point where nothing else would be acceptable."

"It is one of the best schools."

"But it wasn’t worth losing you." He shook his head. "I think maybe I didn’t feel like I deserved to have both of my dreams come true. I had to lose you if I wanted to go to medical school."

"Ah, but you didn’t lose me. I came crawling across the continent like a lizard, unable to live without you…" She wrapped her arms around him.

He laughed. "It was just a matter of time before I did the same thing. We’re meant to be together, you and me."

  "Now that, I believe."

"Lisa, my mother told me you won the contract for the art installations on the new boardwalk." He shook his head. "I don’t want you to give that up for me."

She crossed to him and put her arms around his neck. "I would if I had to, but the good news is, I don’t have to."

  "Really?"

She nodded. "The mayor agreed to let me work on it from here. We can teleconference, and I can send all the files electronically."

  "You’ve thought of everything."

  "Pretty much."

But there was one thing left on his dream list. Family. Not just the one he and Lisa might create one day, but the one they already had in Moon Lake. "I’ll finish out the year, then transfer to Rochester. I want you to be happy, and you’ll be happier there than you would be here."

Lisa’s heart filled with emotion. "Are you sure that’s what you want?"

  "Absolutely."

  "Then that’s what we’ll do."

  Chapter 15

"Oh, come here, baby," crooned Lisa, taking baby Sofia from Melanie’s arms. "Come to Aunt Lisa. I’m the fun one, you better learn that right now. I’m going to take you out for ice cream as soon as we can break out of this joint."

The baby had fine black hair and big blue eyes, with cheeks made for kissing.

Melanie scooted up higher in her hospital bed, wincing slightly. "Don’t you dare. She might have allergies. You have to introduce foods one at a time, and take notes if she has any kind of reaction…"

"I can see Mama’s been reading lots of books."

  "I’m not kidding, Lisa."

Lisa rolled her eyes. "I know you’re not. And I’ll take good care of my niece, don’t worry." She looked back at the baby. "I’ll take you to the beach. Would you like that? Aunt Lisa lives close to the beach in California."

Greg walked in the room. "Not for long."

Lisa smiled wide. "How did your interview go?"

"Great. The dean says I have an excellent chance of being admitted for next semester. I should hear definitively in a week or so."

  "Congratulations," said Rafael.

"Thanks, man." Greg leaned over Lisa’s shoulder to peek at the baby. "What a cutie she is. We got here just in time, huh?"

"Has Mom been in yet?" asked Lisa.

"She was here for the delivery, but we were up really late. I wouldn’t expect her to get up this early."

As if on cue, Barbara came sweeping into the room. She put a covered dish down on the tray table. "I brought strudel." She held out her arms to the baby, seemingly oblivious to everyone else in the room. "There she is! There’s my grandbaby!"

Lisa surrendered the bundle to her mother, smiling at her mother’s joy. "You a little excited there, Mom?"

Barbara turned to Lisa, holding out one arm for a quick hug. "It’s good to see you. How was your flight?"

"I slept through the whole thing, so it was fabulous." Lisa kissed her mom’s cheek.

"And Greg. So good to see you. How’s medical school?" Barbara moved to kiss him as well.

"Good. I’m going to transfer to the University of Rochester next semester."

"That’s wonderful!" Barbara spun in a small circle, carefully cradling the baby. "So much good news! Did you hear that, Sofia? Aunt Lisa and Uncle Greg are coming home from California!"

Lisa met Greg’s eyes and they shared a knowing look.

He stood up and leaned over the baby. "I’m not really your uncle, Sofia." He looked back at Lisa. "Not yet, anyway."

Melanie’s eyes went wide as she turned to her sister.

Lisa held up her left hand, a diamond ring shining bright.

The room erupted into shouts of laughter and congratulations, making Sofia cry. Melanie reached out for her daughter and Barbara settled the baby in Melanie’s arms, then turned to hug Lisa and Greg.

"Don’t get too excited, Mom," said Lisa. "We’re not in any rush to get married."

"Then we’ll wait until you’re settled back home." Barbara smiled at the baby, nursing at Melanie’s breast. "Maybe by then, Sofia can be a flower girl."

"Barbara," said Greg. "May I call you Barbara now?"

  "Of course."

"I’m going to drag your daughter to Vegas sometime in the next six months and make her marry me. Do you want to come?"

Barbara smiled. "Oh, I’d love to."

Lisa shook her head. "You’re killing me."

Greg crossed to her. "I love you, and I want you to be my wife."

Those were heady words, and they made her feel more special than she ever knew she could feel. But he must be joking about the location. "You know I won’t marry you in Vegas."

He looked at the ceiling. "Paris?"

"There’s only one place on earth I want to get married, and you of all people ought to know where it is."

  He grinned. "Moon Lake."

She nodded. "It’s the only place I’ve ever wanted to be. It’s where I belong."

"Correction. It’s where we belong." He leaned in and kissed her soundly on the mouth.

  Dedication

This one goes out to my friends and family who read my books and support me, always letting me know they’ve read the latest installment. Special thanks to Don Kawakyu-O’Connor for the medical know-how, Dawn LeBeau for the moments of sanity, and Amanda Usen for the ah-ha editing.

Most of all, thank you to my husband, Brian, who is becoming one heck of a romance novel mastermind. He saved this plot more than once, and this is a far better book for his efforts.
