Miracle Wolf for Christmas

Page 8

Kent grabbed his coat and headed outside to try and find her. She was sitting by one of the outside enclosures. A gray wolf sat the other side watching her. She had a way with animals and he should have known from the beginning that she was mate material. She looked up at him as he approached. It was cold and looked like it was about to snow again, but he slid down next to her.

“Do you know how tough that was for me?” he asked.

She put her head on his shoulder.

“I’ve been a lone wolf for thirty-eight years. I thought I liked it, but then I met you and I realized, in all honesty, that I hated it.”

“Kent, we can’t do this.” She put her hand on top of his.

“If it’s too soon after your husband’s death, I understand. I mean, if you don’t want to get married, I can wait. You’re my mate and it’s supposed to be, so we can wait to tie the knot.”

She turned to look at him. “It’s not that. I’ve fallen for you, too. I never thought I could love another man, and definitely not so soon after my husband’s passing. It’s sort of shocked me how much I love being with you, but your mate should be someone you can mate with, right?”

Kent didn’t answer. Yes, a true mate was someone who he’d mate with to form a pack of their own. “I’ve never been big into kids. Really I haven’t. Brianne irritated me with her whining and fussing when I stayed at Nick’s place.”

He hated lying. A wolf was not supposed to lie to its mate. He’d found Brianne cute and delightful and he’d secretly held her when Ava and Nick weren’t around so they wouldn’t read anything into it. Since he’d met Ally, he’d wanted lots of little babies like Brianne.

“No you don’t, Kent. Every man wants a family.”

“No, it will be just the two of us until we’re old and grey.” He squeezed her thigh.

“You’d regret it. I can’t let you be with me, because you need a mate who can give you babies.”

Kent took a deep breath. “And that’s all that’s stopping us from being together?”

“Of course it is,” said Ally. “I so want to be your mate, but I can’t let you sacrifice what might have been had I not run you over that night.”

“If you hadn’t done that I wouldn’t have met you and I’d be mateless anyway.”

“No, Kent, forget about me, please.”

“You know I won’t. Anyway, have you gotten a second opinion about not being able to have more children?”

  Ally shook her head.

“Then how about we make a deal. We have a clinic for shifters and two doctors who might be able to help. Bear McWilliams delivers babies and is an expert on all things in the female department, and Cole MacDonald is a fertility expert. Yes, they’re bear shifters. In fact, we’ll be going to Cole’s wedding next month. You go see them, let them examine you, and if they say no chance of having a baby then you win, but if there’s the slightest chance of us having a family, then I win.” Kent held out his hand. “Do we have a deal or not?”

Ally slipped her hand into his. “Deal.”

Kent knew in his heart that Bear and Cole would be able to do something for Ally. She’d gone to have her blood drawn and was now in the examination room with Bear. Kent had tried to read a magazine, but couldn’t. He put it down and chewed on the nail of his index finger. He hadn’t done that in years.

He saw Bear head out of the room and walk toward him. Could he read anything from his facial expressions? Was it bad news that Ally would never conceive again?

Kent stood. “Have you finished examining Ally?”

“I actually didn’t need to because she wanted me to check out a rash that appeared this morning and she’s been worried about it,” said Bear.

“A rash?” He hoped everything was okay with her. What if she was sick? What if she’d picked up some fatal disease from one of the animals? Had she been bitten or scratched and hadn’t mentioned it?

“You want to come with me, because she wants you to see it too?” said Bear.

Now he was completely confused, but followed Bear anyway.

Ally lay on the table and looked toward the door as Kent came in. She put her hand out to him. Kent took it.

“Okay, let’s show Kent your rash.”

Bear lifted up Ally’s examination gown and there, just faintly by her belly button, was not a rash but a mark. A shifter pregnancy mark.

He put his hand to his mouth and almost burst out crying.

“Dr. McWilliams told me what it is and I can’t believe it,” said Ally.

“It’s Bear, by the way, and it’s true, you’re going to have a baby.”

Ally burst into tears and Kent hugged her. “I’m going to have another baby. We’re going to have a baby,” she whispered in his ear.

“Why don’t I leave you two alone so you can let this all sink in?” said Bear.

Kent waited for Bear to leave and then slid onto the examination table next to Ally. “I told you doctors can be wrong,” he said.

“Maybe it’s the powerful wolf-man sperm,” said Ally.

Kent laid his hand on her belly. Was he ready for this? He’d only just gotten his mind around the whole I’ve-found-my-mate thing and now fatherhood was being thrown at him. Yes, sure he was. Diapers, sleepless nights, teething. Yeah, he couldn’t wait for all that.

“It happened Christmas night,” said Ally. “It’s my holiday miracle.”

“So now you’re convinced we’re supposed to be together?” asked Kent.

“I think me running you over was supposed to happen.”

Ally puffed the pillow up and lay back, listening to Kent singing as he showered. Something hard in the middle of the pillow was making her uncomfortable. She turned around and looked behind it. It was a box. She hadn’t put it there, so who… She guessed Kent had something to do with it. She pulled it out and opened the lid to see a mug sitting in there. She lifted it up and saw the inscription—

  Wolf Momma-to-be.

She smiled just as Kent walked out, naked and gorgeous.

“Have you looked inside that mug?” asked Kent, sliding on the bed next to her.

  “Kent, it’s, it’s…

“A ring. Guess I have to do the decent thing now that I’ve gotten you pregnant.”

“It’s gorgeous,” said Ally, slipping it onto her finger.

  “So is that a yes?”

  “It’s a definite yes.”

She kissed him while sliding her hand onto his cock.

“Hey, none of that sort of thing. Didn’t I tell you that once a female shifter is pregnant, there’s no sex until after the baby’s born?”

He turned his back on her.

  “But I’m not a shifter.”

“But you’re part of the pack now, so rules are rules.”

No sex with Kent was going to be tough, but she guessed she’d have to accept it.

She reached over, turned off the light, and snuggled under the blanket, suddenly feeling Kent’s hand on her thigh and making its way to her pussy. He tickled her entrance with his middle finger.

“I thought you just said there was no sex until after the baby’s born.”

“I really had you fooled there.”

Ally sighed as Kent’s finger plunged inside her. She guessed the New Year was going to be so much better than the last one, and all thanks to one sexy alpha wolf.
