The Actor Page 15

“Marc, I’d love for you to come here. I could meet you at the airport.”

I miss you every second. Time apart is clearly overrated.

“I wouldn’t be any fun. I’d probably fall asleep as soon as I set foot in the room.”

“That’s fine. At least we could sleep together. Now, why did you stay up all night?”

The phone went silent for a moment and she imagined him shrugging.

“Alannah left to stay at her mom’s, and without you the house was so empty.”

  “So what did you do?”

Keep your voice calm. Whatever he says, don’t yell.

  “I went out for dinner.”

And you got high, met a girl, and banged her?

Assuming the worst might not be nice, but after all this time she knew him well.

She didn’t say anything, and he sounded guarded.

“There are so many temptations in the world out there.”

“I know. Did you fall for them?”

“Almost. Don’t worry, I kept my nose clean and my dick in my pants. I’ve been sitting here drinking all night, waiting for you to wake up.”

I don’t know what to say.

His voice told more of the story than his words. Getting through the night had clearly been a struggle.

“Laura… Since you moved in with me I haven’t had sex with any other woman, and I won’t. I’m horrible at many things, but that is one promise I will keep.”

“I’m very happy to hear that, Marc. Would you do something for me? Don’t drive to the airport, take a taxi.”

  “Okay.”

  *****

Knowing he would come made her giddy and fatigue enhanced the emotion.

She scurried around the room accomplishing nothing for quite some time before settling down enough to call the front desk and ask for a car.

“Laura, sit down and watch TV or something. It’ll take him more than five minutes to get here.” Talking to herself didn’t help; she’d rather wait at the airport surrounded by people than in the room.

I was too overwhelmed to look at the casinos yesterday. I bet he’ll take me if I ask. Might be exciting.

She kept looking at the clock. Maybe he’d fall asleep and miss the flight.

It seemed like an hour passed, but it was only two minutes.

Despite all her waiting, she arrived at the airport over an hour before his flight was scheduled to come in. Airports confused her, and she plopped herself down at Starbucks to wait. The green and white sign was familiar and comforted her.

The girl handing her coffee asked, “Where are you going?”

  Laura flashed a smile.

“I’m not going anywhere right now. I’m waiting for my boyfriend to come in, he should be here soon. It’s so weird, we’re together all the time and I’ve only been away for one night, but I’m dying to see him.”

  I have butterflies.

  The girl laughed.

  “That’s true love for you.”

It wasn’t time yet, his flight wasn’t scheduled for another twenty minutes, but she kept glancing around, just in case. Then he was there, wearing a dark overcoat, carrying a small suitcase, and at least in her eyes looking more handsome than ever. She ran up to him and threw her arms around him.

“I know this is silly because it’s only been a day, but I missed you so much.”

  “Let’s never be apart again.”

  “I agree.”

I’ve no idea how to make that happen, but I concur with heart and soul. Maybe we’ll grow tired of each other, but I’ll take the risk.

When he finally released his grip on her, he looked into her eyes and smiled. He was pale and had dark rings under his eyes, but it didn’t change anything. He was still the most gorgeous man she could imagine. Others might have different ideals, but to her, he was perfect.

I am so in love with you, and in lust.

  “You having coffee, babe?”

She nodded, and they walked back towards the coffee shop. Feeling his arm around her was pure heaven.

  “Wait.”

He stopped, and looked surprised. She stood on her toes, gazed into his eyes for a moment, and kissed him thoroughly.

  In public.

How did she get so bold?

The girl behind the Starbucks register stared and mouthed, wide-eyed, “That is your boyfriend?”

Laura grinned and saw Marc flash a smile from the corner of her eye. He leaned over the counter.

“I need some coffee… Make sure it’s not decaf. I have to sober up for my best girl here.”

Irresistible. Laura kissed his cheek and brushed a lock of his hair away, and the Starbucks girl exclaimed, “Aww, you two are so cute. That’s true love.”

When the girl went to get the order, Laura nudged him.

“She’s been great, she has kept me company forever. Give her an autograph or something.”

He rolled his eyes, pretending to be exasperated, but couldn’t keep it up.

The rooms that seemed so desolate and a bit frightening on her own were pure luxury when they were together. They spent most of the day in the room, napping and watching TV. Strange how the bed was completely impossible to sleep in alone, and a comfortable cloud when he was there.

The next morning, Marc said, “So what do you want to do today? Go to a casino? More sightseeing? Get married?”

  “What?”

Did he just say what I think he said?

  His mouth twitched.

“C’mon, we are in Vegas. I wanted to talk to you about it yesterday, but the downside of being a drunk is people never believe you.”

“You can’t be serious. How long have you been divorced? Two days?”

  He laughed heartily.

“I’m a celebrity, I’m supposed to be impulsive and weird.”

Settling down a little, he took her hand and pulled her down on his lap. “We’ve been together for a long time. I love you, you love me, and Lawrence assures me it’s the best way to ensure this never happens again.”

  “I don’t…”

“You can’t keep leaving me like this. It’ll kill me.”

  “But…”

He shifted a little under her so he could stick his fingers in his pocket.

  “I even have a ring.”

  That’s not important, but…

  She sent it a glance.

  “Oh my goodness.”

It was the most beautiful and glittering thing she ever saw.

“The hotel would take care of everything. We just have to show up and say yes. Lawrence will deal with the paperwork.”

“I don’t know what to say.”

  “It’s easy. Say yes.”

A warm fluffy feeling filled her chest.

  “Yes.”

I’m going to be Mrs Allender. This is big.
