I heard Max yell at me to open my eyes; he always did that when we would jump together. He kept his eyes open the whole time and just before we would hit the water, he would yell at me to open mine.
My eyes flickered, and I saw the jagged rock sticking out, I was almost to the bottom. The water was coming closer, and I could see it opening up where it wanted me to go. I tilted my body just a bit so that my mark was placed on the pointed, death stone.
The sharpness sliced through me, and the pain was immediate, but then it quickly disappeared. I didn’t scream out in pain or have tears from an injury as I hit the water, I smiled in response to what had happened, I smiled because I was finally returning home.
Epilogue
I was back on the cliff. My clothes were dry, and I didn’t have any pain. My body and mind felt free. The sky was no longer threatening of spilling snow on the land, and the wind had stopped with no chill about at all. The green leaves on the trees were back, and life seemed to have taken on a new surge in being alive, in both nature and myself.
The water was a deep, dark blue that glistened in the sunlight as I gazed longingly over the edge. This place was perfection, this was my happiness, this was where I was supposed to be.
I felt the tingling begin. I knew that he was near. I knew I had finally come back to the place that had haunted my every thought for months. I felt Max everywhere around me. He was in the water, the air, the trees, the grass—he was in me.
“Mara.”
The sweetness of his whisper. The clearness of his English accent as he called out to me. It was the sound that I’d been longing to hear.
I turned away from the cliff and looked towards the trail.
Max was standing there smiling like he always had. He had that sparkle in his eyes that signaled he was up to mischief.
I could feel the love radiating off of him and knew that it was only for me.
Max held his arms wide open and motioned for me to come near.
I didn’t waste any time for us to be apart any longer. I ran to him as fast as I could. I became enclosed inside his warm arms within seconds.
Light kisses were placed on all over my face as he hugged me closer. Max leaned back away from me and smiled. “I’ve been waiting forever for you.”
