“Hello,” Lexi said in a sleepy voice.

“Wake ya punk ass up!” Quita shouted into the phone.

“Damn Quita. Why you screaming in my damn ear like you crazy?”

“Cause bitch, it’s already nine-thirty, and you’re supposed to be getting ready to go!”

“I’m getting up now!” Lexi yelled back at her.

“A’ight ho. Make sure you here no later the twelve fifteen,” Quita told her.

“Don’t worry I will. I’ll be there with bells on,” Lexi told her.

“A’ight, I gotta call Kali to make sure she’s up,” Quita said.

“A’ight later,” Lexi said disconnecting the call.

Quita hung up the phone lit a cigarette, and dialed Kali’s number. Quita called her six or seven times, but she didn’t answer. Quita decided to call Dashiki to see if she’d heard from Kali.

“Hey Shiki, you talked to Kali today?” Quita asked her.

“Damn, good morning to you too,” Dashiki said.

“Oh, good morning. Have you talked to her or not?” Quita said with an attitude.

“No, I haven’t. I called her ‘bout twenty minutes ago but she didn’t pick up. Why, what’s going on?” Shiki asked.

“Oh it ain’t nothing we just made plans, and I was trying to make sure she was up getting ready.”

“What y’all got planned?” Shiki asked.

“I’ll tell you later. Let me run over to her crib real fast and see what the hell she’s doing,” Quita said not even saying bye to Shiki. She just hung up and threw on some flip flops and went over Kali’s.

Quita got to Kali’s door and she could hardly move. She had a huge knot in her stomach. For some reason she started shaking, and her heart began beating super fast. Quita proceeded to knock on the door, but it was already open. She walked in calling Kali’s name.

“Kali! Kali! Kali!” She screamed over and over. Kali wasn’t answering. ‘Where the fuck is she at?’ Quita thought.

Quita had a really bad feeling. When she went upstairs to the bedroom and she saw her sister lying on the bed naked with her throat slit from ear to ear.

Time seemed to stand still as her eyes filled up with tears. She fell to the floor screaming at the top of her lungs. uita lay in the floor crying for god to make her sister come back, but it was like he didn’t hear her because Kali was still lying in her bed lifeless.

“God why? God why? Why you take my sister?” She asked. As she sat there crying she realized that she had to get out of there. What if they were after her and Lexi too?

Finally she got up and ran around to the back of the projects where Dashiki lived to tell her what she’d just witnessed. She was trying to tear Shiki’s door down.

“Damn!” Shiki said opening the door. She was ready to curse Quita out for beating on her door like she was crazy, but when she saw Quita she knew something was wrong. Quita fell in the door screaming and crying.

“Quita what’s wrong? Tell me what happened.” Shiki told her over and over until she finally told her.

“Kali dead! Kali dead! My sister is gone! She is gone!” Quita kept telling Shiki.

Dashiki heard the words coming out of Quita’s mouth and she to started screaming and crying with Quita. They clutched each other and continued to cry until Shiki broke free.

“Come on Quita we need to calm down and call the police. Did you hear me Quita? We need to call the police,” Shiki said still crying.

Quita managed to calm down and get out the floor. She got up on the couch and put her head down trying to figure out what the fuck had just happened.

  Chapter 22

Since Kali’s murder Quita had fallen into a depression again. She wasn’t talking to anybody, and she even stopped answering her phone all together. If someone stopped by she would just let them knock. Quita was feeling like she had a curse or her because it seemed like eveybody she loved was taken from her. First it was her parents going to jail, then Trey get shot, Timmy got locked up, and now her sister was gone. ‘Why is my life so fucked up? What have I done to deserve this?’ She thought over and over. Needless to say Quita and Lexi never made their trip that day.

They buried Kali a week later. It was the day after Quita’s birthday. She was buried next to their maternal grandparents. The service was just as crowded as Trey’s. Everybody was their show their condolences for Kali’s passing.

Seeing Jade there was surprising to Quita. She tried calling her to tell her about Kali when it first happened, but she never answered or called Quita back.

Lexi was stuck to Quita like glue. Although Quita didn’t want to be around anyone, Lexi refused to leave her alone. Lexi gave Quita a ride home as soon as the services were over. Quita decided not to go to the gravesite or back to the church to eat. She just wanted to go home and ignore the whole world.

The only thing that made her brighten up was that the police did allow her mom to come to the services. Ricky wasn’t able to come because he wasn’t Kali’s biological father.

“Quita, look I know you fucked up right now, but I’m here for you anytime you need me.”

“I know girl and thanks,” Quita managed to say through tears.

Lexi pulled up in the projects, Quita flicked her cigarette out the window and gave Lexi a big ass hug.

“Call me later I’ll answer,” Quita told her.

“A’ight ma I got you,” Lexi said.

Quita got in her car and headed to her crib. She got inside and took another shower. She made herself a drink and lay on the couch and watched, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” that was Kali’s favorite movie. Quita woke up not realizing she had fallen asleep. She looked around and realized that it was dark out.

“Fuck!” She cursed. She got up and started the movie over. Then she heard a knock on the door. At first she wasn’t going to answer it, but whoever it was just wasn’t giving up. They kept knocking.

“Who the fuck is it?” She yelled, but didn’t get an answer.

“I said who the fuck is it?” She said looking through the peephole. She didn’t see anyone.

Her heart skipped a beat, and she started thinking that maybe whoever merked her sister was coming back for her. Then it took her back to that day them niggas in Detroit ran up in their crib ready to dead her pops.

Quita ran over to the couch and pulled her 9 milli from under the pillow. She unlocked the door and to her surprise when she opened the door she saw Bay-Bay standing there with a dozen red roses and his bags.

She pulled him in the door and started crying again. She was happy to see because he made her feel safe.

“Hey baby I’m sorry to hear what happened to ya sister,” he told her.

“You heard what happened?” Quita asked him surprised.

“Yeah Lexi called and told Mookie what happened. He told me this morning when he came and got me from that shit hole,” Bay told her.

Quita poured both of them a drink and they sat on the couch and kicked it for a minute to catch up.

“Bay I’m so fucked up right now. Kali and I were so close. She was really all I had ‘cause my moms and pops still locked up. I don’t get down with my sister Dashiki like that. I don’t know what happened, but I got a gut feeling it was Black or his suicidal wife that caused me to bury my sister. I’m telling you right now I’m fucking both those mafuckas up!” Quita spat.

“Baby I know that shit had to fuck you up, but since I got knocked I’ve been doing a lot of thinking. You need to let the police handle that baby,” he advised her.

“What! Did you bump ya fucking head on one of those cement beds or some shit? That is my fucking sister, and I will be dammed if I let that mufucka get away that easy. I know he had something to do with that shit!” She was so angry.

“What are you thinking ‘bout? He merked ya whole fucking family and you talking ‘bout let the police handle it? Fuck the police! What the fuck happened to you baby? Lemme find out you done bitched up ‘cause you went to jail!” Quita
was going hard on Bay-Bay for not having her back.

“Awww, come on baby that ain’t even fair. I just want us to give all this shit up and move down south together. Let’s just put this shit behind us, and you know…” Bay said.

  “I know what?” Quita asked.

“Start a new life. Maybe have us a couple of kids I don’t know,” Bay said.

“Since you talking about a family there is no time like the present. I’m pregnant baby!” Quita blurted out.

“Oh shit baby. Word?” A big smile spread across her face.

“Yeah, I found out the day after I found Kali,” Quita told him through tears. She couldn’t stop crying. Bay grabbed her and hugged her so tight she thought she was going to stop breathing.

“Don’t cry baby. I’m here for you now, and I’m not going anywhere. Kali has gone to a better place. I got your back Slim. We’ll take them niggas down together,” Bay told her.

Quita looked him directly in the eyes.

“Thanks baby. Look, I’m not saying we can’t start over. I’m just saying not right now. I mean damn baby, after losing my sister to this bullshit I gotta get revenge some how. Not to mention all this money we been getting together. I can’t imagine not having money, or going back to those days when I had to eat sugar sandwiches. That’s just not me anymore, and besides we make a good team baby. I just know that from here on out baby I’m forever Allergic to Broke!”
