VALERIE
After a long, tiring, eventful day with Helen, my best friend at the shopping mall with six gigantic shopping bags to show for it, I managed to open the front door that leads into Kevin's building, with one of the bags hanging on my tightly clenched canines and staggered as I walked in. I dropped the huge bags immediately I stepped foot into the house. My hands were numb already.
"I can't believe I made Helen cajole me into getting all these stuff", I said aloud. "If she knew she would not follow me back to the house, she sure as hell shouldn't have made me get all these stuffs
"Jeez now I'm the one with the numb fingers and this agonizing neck pain; damn it! Well, at least, I got all these for me, myself and I alone" I said, making a tongue out face to my imaginary Helen.
Staring at the loads of shopping bags that laid on the floor, I thought to myself what Kevin would say when he got home to find all these stuff Helen, not I, had made me buy. Kevin Grant, my husband to be, was really a caring guy. I had promised not to spend out of the reasonable after I was able to make him part with his credit card... I gave a quick chuckle as I smiled at the thought of it.
"That’s girl power, mama!" We had a deal he wouldn't check his debit alerts but Kevin is Kevin, a businessman, I damn well knew he would rush to his phone the moment it kept on blinking. I smiled to myself again.
"Well, he could check and go gaga for all I cared; I'm getting married to a fucking millionaire and I sure as hell got to live it", I said to myself as I start to unpack and arrange the pile that was staring at me in the face. I was now starting to see the reason why Helen had supported my decision to leave Greg for his brother, Kevin, even though they had fallen out and they were not on good terms then and even now.
Just as I was about to move another pile, I heard my cell ring. "Speaking of the devil", I giggled.
"I haven't even tried out these babies and he is already calling. Bet he has seen the alerts already and his head is rolling"
Hurriedly, I got my cell out of my front jean pocket. I froze as my gaze caught the lights on the screen. I had deleted his digits from my cell but I knew who was calling. Vicious rage filled inside of me in nanoseconds.
"Who the hell does this dude think he is; still got the nerves ringing up my phone? He must really have some nerves and he sure as hell about to get a piece from me! I said to myself as I tapped the screen to answer the call.
"What the hell do you want this time? You must really have some nerves even trying to..."
"Please Valerie, just hear me out", he said, in the subtlest of tones. His tone momentarily stopped my outpour. He sounded the same but unusual. I could tell something was wrong. Was my mind playing tricks on me or this was really Greg?
"I..." I cut him short in his speech, "Look Greg, I don't have time for your games. You had your time and you played me for a fool; I'm older now and wiser and smarter. I would really appreciate it if you don't call this number anymore; I got nothing to say to your sorry ass"
"Please Valerie, just hear me out", he begged over the phone. "I did not have anyone else to call; I know you are really mad at me but Valerie, I really need your help; please"
As I heard these words, anger still burning inside of me, I could sense sincerity in his voice. Something was definitely wrong and he obviously sincerely needs my help. Part of the anger in me was suppressed.
"What do you want?” I said, maintaining a calm and sharp tone, trying not to sound pained; I did not want anything to make this jack ass think I still cared or I was super hurt by him. I didn't! I had moved on and I needed to make that clear.
"I can't talk over the phone; can we meet at your place. I already checked you there but you weren't in"
"Oh shit! First you call me and now you still got the nerves to make demands... your cheating ass must have learnt nothing!" I thundered from my end of the phone. "If you want to see me, I make the decisions on where to meet; you don't just call me telling me to meet your sorry ass some place, even if it’s at my place"
"Please Valerie, you will get to understand when we meet; I did not mean to get you angry. I mean no harm, I promise"
There was a great deal of sincerity in his voice... but I wasn't going to have any of that.
"Well, I am not the least angry and pained, if that is what you think; it's not like I care one bit", I said making sure he heard every word I said. I realized I was sounding defensive on the contrary. Yuck! I said under my breath.
"Well, I'm not at my place right now as you noticed. I just might come by much later today. I'm not promising anything but I would let you know"
"Actually Valerie, it’s really serious and if you could just squeeze out a little time, its means a lot. I know I'm asking for a lot right now. If it wasn't life and death serious, I won't have to put you through all these stress. Please"
I gave a heavy prolonged sigh. "How serious is this?" I asked, hoping deep within me it wasn't as serious as he had painted it. I needed just one reason not to go see him.
"Valerie, really serious… I wouldn't put you through all these but there was no one else I could call. Please"
There was a pause on the phone. I took my time, involuntarily though. I gave another heavy sigh. This might be some serious ass shit I'm about to get myself involved in, I thought to myself.
"I will be over at my place very soon; I would let you know when I get there"
"I will be at your front door, Valerie. Thanks a lot. You don't know how much this means to me"
Yeah right, I said to myself as I tapped my screen to end the call. A pop up message icon appeared on the top part of my phone. I slid it down. It was a text from Kevin. I slid it down and tapped on it to reveal its content.
/>
He was checking to see how I was and if I was done spending his money. A wide grin grew on my face as I read every word of his text. Wait till you figure out, I giggled loudly.
I dropped the fancy top I was holding back to the pile; needed to try and make sense out of the last five minutes. What could be wrong?
Greg could be one hell of a lying ass but I could tell he meant what he had just said. Something serious was really wrong and he needed my help.
I thought of calling Kevin to tell him about it or at the least let him know where I'm headed. I cautioned against it. He probably would go against it. Well, I don't blame him.
I don't approve of it myself. But Greg really sounded like this was a big deal over the phone and if it’s as serious as he sounded, I don't want Kevin going against helping out based on some insecurity factors.
I was way over Greg, even if Kevin still remotely harbored in his head the possibility that I wasn't completely over him. I hurriedly dragged the shopping bags to the bedroom one after the other, neatly piled them up at one end and rushed out of the room. I left Kevin a text message that I was going back to my place to get some stuff just in case he got back before me before I dashed out of the house.
All the way through my journey from Kevin's to my apartment, I kept pondering on what exactly could have happened to make Greg sound unusually scared on the phone. It wasn't like him. He had a big boastful mouth, that side of him I knew.
It took a while before I got "home". I hadn't been here in weeks. I sighted someone with Greg' body frame in front of my crib from afar off. He sat on the steps in front of my apartment, with black hood on.
As I drew nearer, he noticed my presence and started to stand. I noticed he was having quite a difficult time getting up from the stairs. Just then was I able to get a clear view of his face; shock was visibly registered on my face!
I increased my pace from tiny baby steps to giant strides as I rushed to get a hold of him before he falls off. My heart skipped as I got a few feet away from him.
"Jesus!" I screamed. "Who did this to you?" I asked as I caught him in my weak feminine hands.
He couldn't speak much. At that point, all I could think of was getting him in. But I hadn't brought my key along.
"I brought the spare", he said.
I frantically reached into his pockets to retrieve the keys with one hand as I held him with my other hand. I scrambled to open the door and led him in with one of his arm on my neck.
He made a loud groan as I attempted to get his arm over my neck.
"Jeez, this is more serious than I thought", I thought to myself.
I quickly cleared a space on the couch in the sitting room and I led him to sit in the space. The house was a mess. As he sat, I cleared some extra space, removing the clothes and books that sat there and placing them in the corner of the house.
"What happened, I asked", really sounding disturbed. "Who did this to you?" "Are you in some kind of trouble?"
Obviously he was in, except this was a gruesome car accident. I remember I did not see his car out the front yard… but so many thoughts were running across my mind that I couldn't slow down to think.
He made an attempt to speak. I could see the pain in his eyes. Truthfully, he did not want to have to involve me but I was the only one he could call.
"I'm sorry Valerie for dragging you into this..."
"You did not drag me into anything" I cut him before he could start up a sad speech. "No one dragged me into anything. I came out of my own volition. If I did not want to come, I wouldn't have been here. Now, tell me, what happened?"
He breathed heavily, looked down, trying to prevent himself from making eye contacts with me.
"Just say it already", I snapped.
"It's Ray..." There was a long pause.
"Okay?" I asked, looking into space, with the palms-apart gesture asking what Ray had done.
"Ray beat you up or what?" I said, trying to draw more words from him impatiently.
"I took a loan from Ray" he paused... Then he continued. "I promised I was going to pay back in six months. Long story short, I wasn't able to meet up with my end of the deal. Now, he is after me"
"I asked for some more time. One month tops. But he won't have any of that."
"I was on my way to my aunt's place when some street boys crossed me with knives and clubs. They did this to me and said I got one week to come up with the money or they are going to come again to finish the job"
I was shocked at the sound as he told the gory tale, palms resting on my cheeks as I listened with intent.
"How much is it?" I asked. He stared at me visibly shaken
“Thirty thousand", he said. I gasped!
"What! Thirty what! What were you thinking! What did you even need that kind of money for?"
"I saw an ad online about a real estate business with very good prospects. I followed with keen interest and did an in depth research on it. I could have sworn it was legit", he narrated with regret.
"Everything was real. Or so it seemed. I was shown the location, sign papers and got receipts" He shook his head in dismay. I shook my head in pity.
"Why didn't you call the cops? Isn't what they are for?"
"I did. I involved the cops when I started noticing inconsistencies with their words and actions. But it was too late. They disappeared into thin air. It all happened like magic; their office, website, phones, everything, just like that. It was like they never existed. I looked like a fool when the cops kept asking questions and I couldn't answer. They promised to try their best with the info I gave but that's as far as they can go" he said. I looked on into his eyes as he continued to speak.
"Ray wouldn't have none of that. It’s either I get him his money or... he even has my car now. I should get it back if I pay his money. I am not even done paying for the car yet at the dealers." he shook his head again.
I could have sworn I saw a drop of tear from his left eye. He was really into a huge problem here.
"I'm sorry to sound this way Greg. I really feel for you right now. But why did you call me? Ten grand is a lot of money, you know. How do I come in here? I don't have that kind of money"
At the sound of that, he looked dejected. "I know. I don't want you dragged into this, believe me. I know you must have a lot going on at your end. But you are my last hope right now T. If you know anyone that can help me with a loan or a Job, I promise to try my very best to get it back", Greg said, with the last bit of hope in him.
With hands still resting on my cheeks, and my gaze locked on him, I pondered deeply, trying to digest everything he had just said. This was quite a lot to take in.
I sure as hell had moved on but I wasn't going to just sit and let him get killed over money; although it was quite a lot of money.
I sighed, bringing my attention back to the room.
"First things first, let's get you patched up. You don't seem like you have been to the hospital or something"
I rushed to the medicine cabinet over my kitchen sink at the far end of the small apartment and got out some cotton wools, hydrogen peroxide, gloves and plasters.
"Have you had anything to eat?" I asked, as I made my way back to the couch. "Not that I care or anything... I'm just saying"
"Thanks Valerie, I'm good. I totally get you", he responded timidly, knowing where I was driving at.
I got Greg patched up the best way I could. I'm no specialist in this sort of thing and none of my people had ever been beat up this bad. He was getting batter; at least, he sounded better than over the phone.
I had to leave. I didn't want Kevin to start worrying about where I was. It was getting late.
Greg asked if he could stay a couple of days at my place, for the mean time. Before he asked I was going to suggest it. Ray could send his goons to finish the Job and Greg' place was the first place they would check.
Ray knows Greg and I broke up months ago. My place was
the last place he would think of.
Besides, what kind of person would I be turning him down at the point, knowing his life was at risk?
"I have to get going. It’s getting late and I don't want my people looking for me; you know how it is"
"Yea, I get you. Thanks for everything Valerie. Thanks for letting me stay at your place. You have done plenty already"
"Yeah, don't mention. As about the money, I'm not promising anything. I will speak to a couple of people though. Whatever comes up, I’m going to let you know. You should speak to people also on your end"
"Thanks, Valerie"
I stepped out of my apartment, closed the door behind me and heaved a huge sigh of relief and anxiety. What was I getting myself into? I thought to myself.
