Plus she got to go home with her sexy boss every night.
The woman finished her coffee and waved at Kate before she left the cafe. Kate saw her throwing Zul an appreciative glance on her way out. Women ogled Zul all the time but Kate didn't feel jealous or insecure at all. Zul was hers, and hers alone.
Once she finished her shift, Kate went to the back to get her bag. Zul was already holding the door open for her.
CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR
“You hungry?” Zul asked as they walked down the street.
Kate nodded. “I hope Mrs Vomae stowed some leftovers in the fridge for us to heat up.”
“Rohan gave her the night off,” Zul said and dropped his voice. “I think Mrs Vomae's got a date.”
“Really?” Kate beamed.
“Yeah. She's been so secretive the whole week. I asked her but she wouldn't tell me anything.”
“She'll tell you when the time is right.” Kate laughed. “She didn't say anything to any of us, but I'm so excited for her! She's been a widow a long time.”
Zul pouted. “So there's no food and no one at home. Edriq and Nora have gone to watch a movie with Mario and Julia. And Rohan and Amelia are having a celebratory dinner with Tessa at their favorite pizza place. They're celebrating her victory.”
Kate grinned. “Oh yes! Tessa won the final thumb war quite decisively.”
“I couldn't concentrate,” Zul mock-grumbled. “I almost won, you know. I was this close! But you guys were cheering so loudly for the princess. A champion shouldn't be distracted when he's about to win.”
“You're not the champion. Tessa is,” Kate pointed out. When he growled at her, she added hurriedly, “I cheered for you.”
“But you cheered louder for Tessa.”
Zul pretended to sulk until Kate gave him a big kiss on the cheek. Then he grabbed her waist and pulled her to him.
“I know a great place,” Zul said, kissing the top of her head. “They serve the biggest, juiciest burgers in the universe!”
“Then that's where we're going. I'm sure our baby would enjoy a nice, juicy burger.”
Zul froze. There was a long silence as he blinked repeatedly.
Finally, he turned round to face her. “Are you saying what I think you're saying?”
Kate nodded and smiled shyly. “Yes. I bought three pregnancy test kits today and they all showed the same result. I'm pregnant, Zul.”
Zul punched his fist in the air and whooped with joy. Then he picked Kate up and did a bizarre, happy dance. “Oh, oh! I have to be careful,” he admonished himself and set her down very gingerly. “How are you feeling? Was I too rough? Did I…?”
“I'm fine,” Kate said laughing.
“I'll tell my brothers tomorrow. But tonight, I want it to be just the three of us,” Zul said, patting her tummy.
Kate sighed happily as she slid her arm around her mate's waist and strolled down the street with him. It was a beautiful night, and the restaurants and cafes were crowded with happy families and large groups of friends. Laughter and the aroma of food and drink spilled out from the eateries. It was a normal night in the city for many people.
Kate was so happy and grateful that Zul and his brothers could now enjoy their evenings with their families and not have to leave the house every night to fight the Slayors and protect their people.
The Dracans had peace at last. They didn't have to live in fear, and constantly watch the shadows for their enemies. The present was bright enough to chase away all the darkness and pain of the past. And the future looked even brighter.
Kate let out a happy laugh. “You know, Tessa was just begging me for a little cousin the other day.”
“Oh, Princess Tessa will be thrilled!” Zul beamed. “She'll have a sweet little cousin to play with!”
Kate arched a brow. “Somehow I have a feeling that our baby will be a boisterous, rowdy, cheeky little dragon.”
Zul chuckled. “A dragon, eh? But some people still think that dragons don't exist.”
Kate grinned, and placed her hand proudly over her belly. She was one of the lucky few who knew that dragons were real. So was the love and happiness that she now had.
Kate took nothing for granted. She cherished every single day, every moment of peace and joy that she experienced. She knew that the Dracans did too. They had all lost so much, but now they finally had so much more to look forward to.
Life was gritty, challenging at times and full of ups and downs, but it was good. It was real, true and wonderfully, breathlessly good.
