“No, everything’s fine. I was just,” staring at the clock, she continued, “studying, and I didn’t realize how late it was. I’m sorry, I can call you back in the morning.”

“That’s okay, don’t worry,” her mom said, “I’m up now anyway, and you know how hard it is for me to fall back asleep after I wake up.”

Mia was well aware of it, and had often felt guilty about it as a child when her screams at night would wake up her mother. The first years after her dad had been murdered had been the worst. Her nightmares had sent them both to counselling and she had been put on a number of medications. None of them worked, though, the problem wasn’t her dreams...the problem was that her dad was dead.

After they had come to terms with that, the medications had been reduced until she didn’t need them anymore...and then the nightmares stopped. How could she tell her mom that she was living a whole new nightmare and that was why she was calling her in the middle of the night—because she needed her mom to help her through this one.

  “How’s the course going?”

Shaking herself out of her thoughts, Mia says, “Good,” in a high-pitched tone before clearing her throat and trying again, “Good. I am learning a lot from the students I’m working with.”

The lie was easy to give, and there was only a small amount of guilt this time. Originally, she had told her mom that the course involved hands-on work with inner city youth. It was a teaching position as well as a learning course. It wasn’t that dissimilar to other courses she had mentioned to her mom in the past, so it had made it an easy lie.

“I am still worried about you working in a bad neighborhood,” her mother sighs. “You are staying safe, right? Never staying late at work. Not running too early or too late in the day?”

“Yes, Mom,” Mia answers...if only she knew the danger she had already been in.

“I am staying in every night to make sure that I don’t get mugged.”

“You don’t have to be cheeky,” she laughs, “I know you can take care of yourself, but I still worry. That’s my right as a mom, kiddo. I’ve been so worried about you, and every time I talk to you, you seem so far away.”

Mia smiles and for a moment, she forgets about Damon and everything, but it is just for a moment and she sighs, ““I know, Mom. I’m sorry for worrying you, but I have been under a lot of stress with this class.”

“I know, honey, but remember to take care of yourself as well as you take care of your grades.”

“I will, Mom. Other than worrying about me, how have you been?”

“Oh, I’m good. Things are pretty quiet around here. Just working and then coming home to spend the evening with your dad.”

“Step-dad,” Mia says automatically and winces. Now is not the time to start this old fight again. Quickly changing the subject to prevent the argument, Mia says, “You should come up here one time. The museums are amazing, and you would love the shopping.”

The line goes silent for a few minutes and then her mom finally answers, “Yeah, that sounds great, but...I didn’t think you would be up there for that long.”

Mia silently curses herself. What was she thinking inviting her up here? If she came up, that would mean she had to explain her relationship with Damon, and she wasn’t ready for that.

“Um, I’m not sure. I am really enjoying the course, and I may stay longer if they will have me.”

“Really? You don’t feel homesick yet?”

My home is with Damon, wherever he is and if he comes back to me. Mia thinks as she glances at the door again.

“I am a bit, but I’m really busy here, so I don’t have time to be homesick.” At least part of that was true.

“That’s good, I’m glad that you are keeping busy.”

The silence spread through the phone, and Mia starts to wonder if her mom has fallen asleep. “Did you see Damon when he was done?” she asks quietly after a lengthy pause.

  “What?” Mia asks.

“Damon, when he was in town a few months ago, did you see him?”

Mia’s eyes dart towards the door and this time, she stares at it for the escape that she wants from her mother. She has no idea what to tell her or even what Damon had told her. “Yes, I saw him. We had lunch right before he left town,” Mia says quickly.

“Oh, really? Damon said you had a coffee when he first came to town.”

The lie hangs between them like a live cable and neither of them are willing to touch it in case they get electrocuted by it. “Yes, that’s right. We had coffee when he first came to town. Then I ran into him before he left and we had lunch. He must have forgotten.” Mia offered and realized she was offering too much, “Why, does it matter?”

A heavy sigh fills the phone as her mom says, “Mia, I am not blind. I have known for years that you have had a schoolgirl crush on him. I knew it the moment you met him. But you have to realize that nothing will come of it. That is why we pushed Damon away...to protect you. I know what happened on your birthday between you and him.”

The admission hits Mia as if her mother had struck her, why was she bringing this up now? “What do you mean?”

“I mean, I know that you came close to having sex with him...maybe even did. I also know that he stayed with you when he was in town. I am not stupid, and when I drove by your place and saw his bike, I knew that it was more than just meeting for coffee.”

“For all I know...he could be in Chicago with you.” Mia’s stomach lurches at her mother’s admission to knowing everything.

“Why did you never say anything?”

“Because I thought it was a schoolgirl crush. I figured it would go away eventually and you would realize that Damon was all wrong for you. Is it true, is he there with you?”

“Not at the moment,” she replies, her eyes full of tears as her worry turns back towards Damon and why he is so late.

“Has he been there with you?” her mother asks. “Mia, I would be very disappointed with you if you started a relationship with him.”

Shaking her head to see clearly, Mia can only think of one question, “Why? Would it be such a bad thing?”

“Oh my God, Mia! Of course, it would. Never mind that his father and I are married, but he is so much older than you are. And I think he has been doing some illegal things since he left college. I don’t want you to wind up hurt and alone because of him. He has always looked out for what he wanted and nothing else.”

“He’s not like that. You don’t know who he is, and you never have,” Mia yells defensively. “A relationship between us is everything that I need, and if you aren’t going to accept it, then you are going to lose your only daughter.”

As the words come out of her mouth, she realizes in horror that she has just admitted to the relationship with Damon. At the exact same moment, she hears the lock slide open and she moves towards the hallway to see Damon walking through the door.

He looks tired, but the smile on his lips speaks volumes that it was a success. Her mother is an annoying buzz in her ear. “Oh please, Mia, tell me you haven’t done slept with him. Tell me that you two aren’t dating.”

Looking Damon straight in the eye, she takes in a calming breath and says, “I can’t do that, Mom, because it would be a lie. Damon and I are together and I love him.”

Her mom’s sobs leave a tremor of guilt flashing through her, but the other part of her, the part that is so happy to see Damon, says, “Look, I have to go. I will call you in a few days, Mom. I love you, and I hope you will understand.”

And with that, she hangs up the phone. The silence of the apartment is almost alive between them as she shuffles from foot to foot, not sure whether to leap in his arms or fall to the ground crying. He smiles at her and says, “It’s done,” and it is a question and a statement all at once.

Mia smiles and says, “Yes, yes it’s done,” before launching herself into his arms, and she knows as he leaves a lingering kiss on her lips that she is talking about all of it.

  H
is past with the gang is over.

  Her doubts are finished.

Telling her mom about them is done.

Now is the time to start living for each other.

  Chapter Six

Life had been perfect for Mia, and she couldn’t be happier. It has been over a month since Damon had severed all ties with his gang, and so far, it looks like it is holding. Damon has been at home most of the time, and they spend each day together.

They had fallen into a routine, but it wasn’t boring for her. Instead, it was wonderful to spend her days with Damon. They woke up together and headed off on a jog every morning. When they got back, they would shower and make love and then shower all over again.

The day was spent visiting the tourist sites. Mia had been to most of them already, but it was different going with Damon and not actually being afraid of being seen. Then she would retire to her office and finish up her course work for the day before spending the evening with Damon.

It was bliss, and the only dark part of it was that her mother hadn’t phoned her back. She hadn’t even answered Mia’s calls. The only thing that she had received was a text.

“Mia, I need time to get my head around this. I don’t know how long it will take, but I know that I want nothing but happiness for you.”

And that was it; nothing since then that would show her mom was finally coming to terms with Mia’s relationship with Damon.

For Damon’s part, he was a completely different man. He still took charge of their life, and he was still the alpha that all the women noticed, but he was more relaxed. He was happier and while, sometimes, there was a sadness in his eyes when he thought she wasn’t looking, those times were few and far between.

There was no lie between them. She knew he had a past and one that was extremely dangerous. She also knew that he had killed people, but all of the people he had killed were criminals. They were horrible people who had murdered innocents and done a lot worse. It didn’t make it right, but it did make it something she could live with.

When he came back from his meeting, he had been exhausted. They had kissed, but they hadn’t made love. Instead, Damon had lifted her up, carried her to bed, and then fell asleep in her arms. She had lain awake all night, running her hands through his hair and staring up at the ceiling thanking God that he was alive.

The next morning, he talked about the meeting. How intense it had been and how it looked like they were going to kill him a few times. Then he had paid for his freedom with information the gang had wanted before heading away from them.

The meeting had taken only a few hours, but he had spent the next four hours making sure no one was following him. He wanted to make sure they were holding up to their end of the bargain before he came back to her.

And he did come back. Mia rolls over and stares at Damon’s sleeping form and smiles. His thick, black eyelashes cast a shadow on his chiselled cheeks and the five o’clock shadow makes him look as sexy as sin. God, she loved this man!

As she watches him, she can’t help but run her hand over his chest. It was perfectly sculpted, and she loved the way is felt against her body. His eyes open, and he chuckles. “Don’t you ever get enough?” he asks.

  “Of you?” she asks. “Never.”

“Well, it has to wait this morning. I have a surprise for you, and I want to head out before it gets too late in the day,” he murmurs.

Rolling over, he plants a kiss to Mia’s lips, and she wraps her arms around his neck, pulling him in deeper. She can feel his need against her hip, and she squirms against it, pulling a groan from Damon.

“Now play nice, you minx,” he chuckles as he breaks the kiss. “You need to behave or you won’t get your surprise.”

“What if the surprise I want is you inside me?” she purrs.

“Christ, Mia,” Damon curses. “You are going to be the death of me.”

She laughs and cups his shaft. “Come on, let me have a little fun,” she coos and kisses his chest.

He falls back onto the bed, and Mia follows him as she continues to plant kisses on his chest and down his abdomen. His cock swells as Mia travels down closer to it. She plants a kiss to his bulge, and he sucks in the air between his teeth. “You need to stop that,” he growls.

“Or what?” she teases. “Let me do this for you, and then you can take me for my surprise.”

Without waiting for his reply, Mia pulls down his shorts and smiles as Damon’s cock springs free of the fabric. “You look amazing. So delicious,” she smiles with a wicked little wink.

Placing herself between his legs, she licks his cock from tip to hilt as Damon’s hooded eyes watch her. His gaze is so hot, she can practically feel it on her skin.

Sucking the thick shaft into her mouth, she works her mouth up and down as her hand strokes along the flesh where her mouth doesn’t reach. Damon curses and thrashes his hips, driving his cock deeper into her mouth. She takes him, relaxing her jaw and throat as he thrusts up over and over again as his climax builds.

Then he is crying out as his hot semen floods her mouth, and she swallows him, sucking him dry until he collapses against the bed moaning. “God, that was so good,” he murmurs and Mia smiles. “Now, let me do you.”

“Uh-uh,” she laughs as she jumps from the bed. “You have a surprise for me, remember, and we don’t want to be late getting started on our day.”

Running to the bathroom, she casts a saucy grin over her shoulder, “But maybe we can save time in the shower.”

Standing in front of the bike, Mia smiles at how beautiful it is. “You brought it up here! How?”

Damon smiles with pride as he climbs onto his Harley. The last she had seen it was back home, and she thought he had left it up there. She was glad he brought it to Chicago because he looked damn sexy on it.

“I had a friend ship it up for me. I didn’t like being without it.”

“I’m glad you did,” she says and runs her finger over the chrome. “But this is more of a surprise for you than me...unless you’re giving it to me.”

He laughs, “Yeah, that is not going to happen. This is my pride and joy, but I will let you ride it.”

Sticking her lower lip out, Mia fakes a pout, “Well, that’s no fun, I want to drive it.”

“Trust me, you will enjoy everything that I can do with you on this bike,” he says and passion flares in his eyes.

Mia can’t help the blush or the way her body clenches at his offer. She can just imagine what he can do on the bike. If it were anything like what they did in the shower, she would be quivering for hours. “So what are we late doing today, Damon?” she asks.

“We are going to head up the coast of Lake Michigan and hit a few of the smaller towns. Do a little window-shopping, have dinner at this amazing little restaurant that I know, and then head to a secluded spot that I have been wanting to take you to since we arrived. After that, I thought we would stop at a club on the way back home for a few drinks.”

It sounded wonderful. “Sounds great,” she says as she climbs on behind Damon.

Her skirt rides up on her legs and for a second, she regrets the decision to wear it, at least until Damon’s hand slid down the bare skin. Electricity jumped between them and need shot straight to her groin. No matter how long she knew this man, she would always want him like this.

Damon starts the bike, and the hum of the motor vibrates right into Mia’s core. Gasping in surprise, Damon chuckles at her reaction. “Like that do you, now imagine how it will feel when I’m inside you while we’re on the bike.”

  “You wouldn’t,” she groans.

“Not yet, but I intend to take you on here the first chance I get. I’m just glad you are wearing a skirt,” he casts a cocky grin over his shoulder at her, and she almost melts into her panties.

The sunset on the water is breathtaking, and Mia smiles as Damon wraps his arms around her. The day had been amazing. First with them going from town to town
along the coast, they visited so many she had lost count of them or even what their names were.

They had stopped to eat at a little diner with the best hamburgers in the world. And the best cheesecake. Damon had insisted that she eat dessert, and while she hated the extra calories, she loved the decadent taste and the way Damon reacted as she teased the sweet morsel off of her fork.

After dinner, they headed for this secluded cove to watch the sunset. It was beautiful, but what made it perfect was that she was spending it with Damon. “Now for my dessert,” he whispers into her ear and she gasps as his breath heated her cooled flesh.

“What do you mean?” she asks.

“You, me, the bike...remember, I promised I would have my cock deep inside you while I was on it.”

His words send desire shooting through her as he turns her in his arms. He dips his head and licks the corner of her mouth. “Mmmm, you taste like cheesecake,” he whispers before capturing her mouth in a toe-curling kiss.

Mia leans into him and sighs when the kiss ends. Her body is humming from her desire, and she can’t wait to climb onto the bike. He leads her back to it and straddles the bike as he pulls her in for another kiss. Fire spreads across her body, and she nips his lower lip, sucking it between her lips as she does.

Growling, Damon slides his hands up her legs and pulls her panties free. She helps him navigate them around her knee-high boots. Then his hands are playing with the small square of curls below her navel before they slip between the folds of her pussy.

Mia groans as she leans against him and spreads her legs slightly. His fingers trace the folds of her pussy before they flick against her clit, which sends tremors shooting through her body. His finger slides into her wet hole, and she feels her pussy clench around it, trying to suck him deeper.

Groaning, Mia kisses him deeper and says, “I need to feel you inside me,” against his lips.

Without hesitating, Damon lets go of her long enough to open his pants and pull out his shaft. Reaching for it, he bats her hand away and then scoops her up in his arms. He swings one of her legs over the bike and then she is impaled on his shaft.
