“I’m going down to Roseburg on Sunday,” I said. “Mom and Dad want to take me out to dinner.”

  “How’s your mom doing?”

“She’s still improving. She’s slow, both in movement and in speech, but when I talk to her I know she’s still in there, still the same.”

He nodded. “And your dad? How’s he holding up?”

“He has…surprised me. Now that he’s forced to be competent around the house, he actually is. And he’s taking good care of her. It’s an awful thing to say, but I almost think it was good for him—good for them both—that this happened. They seem closer than I’ve ever seen them.”

“Nothing ever turns out how we expect, does it?”

  “No.”

We drove along in silence a few more blocks.

  “Scott?”

  “Hmm?”

“You want to come down there with me, on Sunday?”

He took his eyes off the road long enough to glance at me.

“I mean, if you want,” I said. “You don’t have to.”

He smiled. “No, I’d like that.”

Maybe I wasn’t ready for Mr. One-in-a-Million, or maybe I was. Either way, I would find out in time.

And either way, I was going to be all right.
